Man, the US healthcare system is so messed up..And finally, I can begin to understand Cricaddict’s and KR’s posts on the US Healthcare system.

Moore makes it sound rosy, but it is not as elegant as it is shown to be in the film. US has the best healthcare quality in the world, however the current coverage leaves lot to be desired. Hopefully, this adminstration will do something about it. However, copying the Canadian or European system is not the answer for US.

You guys pay for your healthcare in the form of taxes. But you don’t have wrestle with your insurance companies over co-pays and deductibles and claim approvals every time you get sick do you, unlike in the States.

Not only that the health care system in UK is a joke, a simple case of appendicitis can take over a year to get treated because of the same socialized medicine. Same reason why many Canadians come to the US for treatment.

You pay higher medicare levy with your tax if your salary is higher not much if you are low income earner and nothing if its very low income group. The pvt health insurance is only valid for surgery and hospitalization. There are 2 issues with this systems * People who are well off (meaning above avg income) they pay around $1100 a year for medicare and around 2400 for pvt health care (family cover) * If you go to the GP and he charges more than Govt approved rate then you pay out of pocket although max $1000 per year beyond which govt pays 90%. This system works well but we dont have ANY pvt hospitals open 24hrs a day .. In case of emergency one has to go to a public hospital and wait for 8 hrs. So taking pvt health doesnt help but if u dont then u pay even higher medicare levy

Rajiv Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 MM, Canadian POP is like 35 million and apart from free doctor check ups ( which have huge waiting time ), things such as surgery and all take long due to wait time. People go for pvt health insurance here too I feel the best medic is India, am sick and tired of going to doc for lil prescriptions and I just don't have the confidence in these ppl

For example, when I was in my grandparents' town, the movie tickets were at most Rs. 50. The movie tickets in Bangalore at the least were Rs. 160 I think. I realize that its pretty common for cities to have exorbitant prices but more than 5 times as expensive for movie tickets, and almost everything scales by a similar or greater factor.

Marirs, while there is a lot wrong with the US healthcare system, you have to take Mike Moore's information with a ton of salt. Mike Moore is the liberal version of Rush Limbaugh with less influence. You'll get more context. The bottom line: (a) For basic care, a government-run system may work better. For specialized, evidence-based, high-tech care - not so much. (b) The high costs associated with the US system come from high insurance overheads (thanks to huge inefficient HMOs) and medical malpractice insurance costs. By the way, HMOs were thrust on the people by the government. © If the government takes over healthcare in the US (single-payer system with no competition), it will compound the problem. The government will just be one huge HMO and drain tax resources even more. It is simply wrong to think that overall care in Cuba or even India is better for the regular citizen. Americans (or NRIs) can go to India and get great healthcare by flashing $$ signs. Just like Moore did in Cuba. But do regular people get the same kind of care? The good news is that the Obama government seems to understand that there is a problem, and is getting insurance companies to shed costs. That is just the beginning. They need to do more to encourage tort reform (to minimize frivolous lawsuits) and keep attacking at the cost-end so people can afford good care.

What blows my mind is how the US Consumer allowed the systematic takeover of the entire healthcare Industry here by the Drug and Insurance companies. And your point reg. the sky-high medical malpractice insurance costs actually escalating things even further is a good one. In their effort to be fair to a few (people who file these lawsuits), things have been made difficult for everyone else.
