I have been listening to news channels and the main reasons for BJP's loss in this elections seems to be due to the following reasons. I also agree with most of them. 1) They ran a negative campaign attacking the govt. instead of a positive capaign. They even blamed Indian govt of job losses whereas India had been one of the least affected from the global recession. This did not go well with the common people because such a negative campaign was not liked at all. 2) Advaniji was not as charismatic a leader as Atalji and BJP ran the whole campaign revolving around Advani's projection as a strong leader was a mistake. 3) Advaniji and BJP called Manmohan Singh a weak and lame PM and insulted him infront of the whole country. This was not accepted by the Indian masses who has always respected their PM to some extent being in a democracy. 4) BJP's whole election campain was in a mess and there was no mention of developement in their whole campaign. India is getting even more educated and developed and only a political campaign based on developement makes more sense in this 21st century and hope that all political parties will learn it from this elections. 5) Internal conflict within the BJP where there was fight between two of the top three leaders - Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh until a few weeks of the elections. 6) NDA failed to get good coalitions and retain its coalition and it was also one of the significant reasons for the loss. These are some of the signifant factors resulting in BJP's loss in Elections 2009

Nothing new. The entire strategy of BJP is based on negativity. To every issue there answer is the same - This is because of Nehruvian policy since 1947 OR Hindus are underpreviliged in their own land OR Pseudo Secular are responsible the mess. The problem with Congress is that they do not do anything at all, problem with BJP is it keeps moving further and further in the negative direction.
2) Advaniji was a charismatic leader like Atalji and BJP ran the whole campaign revolving around Advani's projection as a strong leader.
Atalji was certainly a more charismatic leader but towards the end of his reign his charisma had begun to fade. Kandhar hijacking and Gujrat broke his back. The latter where he basically let Modi run amoke left him as a senior BJP leader. Had he had the moral gumption of taking on Modi, Vajpayee would have become the most famous Indian Statesman of modern India...plus Muslims would have forever dropped their reservation against BJP. As things stand neither happened.
3) Advaniji and BJP called Manmohan Singh a weak and lame PM and insulted him infront of the whole country. This was not accepted by the Indian masses who has always respected their PM to some extent being in a democracy.
Advani shall rightly receive joota both before and after the election.

Refer to point 1.
5) Internal conflict within the BJP where there was fight between two of the top three leaders - Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh until a few weeks of the elections.
Pushing Jaitley to the back of the scenario was a bad decision. Jaitley would not have won the party this election but would surely have helped them do lot better. xxx

I agree but the real party worker still wants hindutva to be the main issue .. BJPs core support is from people who dislike muslims ....so they can never give up on that, in the past they had many leaders and one would handle economy the other one hindutva and the main leader to keep it together .. now its a free for all. Me thinks, Modi will try to get a hold of the party and will get support from all "core" party workers and it will result in a Rahul Gandhi Vs Modi in the next elections. PS: I also think that Manmohan will retire from politics mid-term and give Rahul a run for 2 years before the elections. Although it depends on the economy and other affairs

This election is smack in the face of conservative right and regressive left politics and a big boost for liberal, centrist and progressive politics. People dont want to be ruled over by fear and communal ideology. BJP put communal politics in the Indian election map, Cong has been successful in putting governance back in people's minds.

BJP needs to shed it's image and principle of being primarily a Hindu party. The more they do in that regard the better off they are. Given that we have a large number of "minorities" and that most of the new generation isn't extremely religious, they need to become a more inclusive party.

Well if you analyse result, our people do not care about national issue, it was local and state issues. Gujarat ruled by BJP won easily here (Good Goverance) Same with Bihar Same with AP Same with Delhi Same with Maharasthra Same with MP Same with Rajasthan Average voting rate was 50% only, imagine 50 crore peopel deciding for 100 crore Simple example in our constitutency This is stronghold of BJP, has never lost this seat in 20 years. But today they lost it. Why? The difference was 20000 votes. I know plenty of so called learned folks, who keep gossiping what the f is govt. doing, did not even vote. Most voting came from rural part of your city, which is were Congress candidate was based from. I saw on voting day, congressi going to poor areas, in a bus and asking everyone to come and vote (and get paid). Most of middleclass, upper class support BJP, but they allow had this attitude, my vote does not matter, anyways BJP will win. Thats big problem with our country. We need 80% voting and Election commision should think about innovative ways so that people can vote. I like americans in this regard. they all so feel proud after voting. Congress got 20% votes of 50 crore so about 10 crore.

From anecdotal evidence, I'd say that their support with the middle/upper-middle is dwindling. Many of my friends back home who were pro BJP/Atal earlier went over to Congress this time.

Considering in 2004 about 700 million people were eligible to vote I would say the actual number of eligible electorates in Indian election 2009 would be close to 750-800 million. Taking 50% of that as actual voting the number of votes cast would be close to 37.5 to 40 crore. That number, 40 crore, would still make for the world's 3rd most populous country!! I hope you see the sheer dynamics of numbers at play here. And while I dont disagree with your notion of greater participation I do hope you see the sheer numbers and how that can be a deterrent. This morning I was checking result of votes cast in Bihar. On an average every constituency had 500,000 (half a million) plus. In most cases it was lot more. Now if you have a town of population 500,000 in US that will qualify for a big enough town! Towns like Boston, Memphis, Las Vegas, Seattle, Washington DC etc etc. And I am not even talking of Patna, I am talking of Khagaria, Banka, Sitamarhi etc etc. xxx

I somehow mistyped the sentence .. I was about to say Advaniji is not as charismatic as Atalji but I wrongly typed it .. I think that Advaniji does not even posses 30% of the respect that Atalji had amongst the Indian masses .. his projection as a strong leader and running the campaign around him was a grave mistake

They even blamed Indian govt of job losses whereas India had been one of the least affected from the global recession. This did not go well with the common people because such a negative campaign was not liked at all. I dont think this mattered, BJP did lost only 16 seats nationally. It was a congress victory in key states against third front parties - indicating a preference for stability by the voters. In Rajasthan caste politics and internal bickering did BJP in. Same with Gujarat. Maharshtra was lost to MNS factor, and in MP it is said there was internal sabotage. Basically voters were concerned about local issues and central stability - congress gained against BJP on local issues/caste politics and against smaller parties on the issue of stability. 2) Advaniji was not as charismatic a leader as Atalji and BJP ran the whole campaign revolving around Advani's projection as a strong leader was a mistake. There is nothing that could be done about this. Atalji is gone, Advani was the only choice. They could have gone with Modi but that would have scared allies. 3) Advaniji and BJP called Manmohan Singh a weak and lame PM and insulted him infront of the whole country. This was not accepted by the Indian masses who has always respected their PM to some extent being in a democracy. Again refer to first point. Congress gained most against Left and third front parties. BJP lost on local issues to congress. But I agree BJP attacked Manmohan Singh more than speaking about alternatives. 4) BJP's whole election campain was in a mess and there was no mention of developement in their whole campaign. India is getting even more educated and developed and only a political campaign based on developement makes more sense in this 21st century and hope that all political parties will learn it from this elections. I believe BJP tried to go in for a development plank. Varun Gandhi issue was forced on BJP, and from then on it was on the defensive. It was a blunder which helped consolidate muslims against it in UP. 5) Internal conflict within the BJP where there was fight between two of the top three leaders - Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh until a few weeks of the elections. Definitely would have hurt. Both should be sent into mass campaign in rural areas of UP, Rajasthan etc. Jaitley should probably focus in Andhra where the opposition space is wide open for BJP after the trouncing of TDP. 6) NDA failed to get good coalitions and retain its coalition and it was also one of the significant reasons for the loss. BJP was banking on post poll allies. It also made a mess of existing alliances by giving in to whims of partners like Shiv Sena and Akali Dal. Shiv Sena must be told to go its own way if it does not mend ways. These are some of the signifant factors resulting in BJP's loss in Elections 2009

Basically voters were concerned about local issues and central stability - congress gained against BJP on local issues/caste politics and against smaller parties on the issue of stability. It matters a lot because Indian people like positivity and hate negativity nowadays .. I agree that BJP has not lost much seats (less than 20) but Congress has cut through the Third and Fourth front thereby gaining huge amount of seats ... but still a negative campaign will always be detrimental for any party .. for example there were some basic things in the campaign which could never digested in the negative campaign .. BJP said that the job losses in India during recession was due to Congress at govt. which sounded funny to any normal educated person .. the whole world was going through a severe recession and India has done very well to lessen the affects of recession .. but there will still be some job losses due to worldwide recession .. blaming the Congress for the job losses was surely a negative as well foolish campaign ... if they wanted they could have promised jobs to more people when they come to power instead of attacking the Congress on job losses during recession.. there were several other similar things in their campaign which were merely negative instead of being positive... that has surely affected the pysche of the educated voter who voted for the positive campaign of the Congress instead 2) Advaniji was not as charismatic a leader as Atalji and BJP ran the whole campaign revolving around Advani's projection as a strong leader was a mistake. There is nothing that could be done about this. Atalji is gone, Advani was the only choice. They could have gone with Modi but that would have scared allies. Bringing on Modi will be an even bigger blunder because in next elections NDA will face an even more powerful leader in Rahul Gandhi .. Modi will never go well with all sections of society whereas Rahul Gandhi has mass appeal throughout India .. Rahul Gandhi is one of the main reasons for Congress success in this elections and he is growing bigger as a mass leader year after year .. if he continues his present work he might sweep the elections in 2014 .. so a mass leader would be needed in the next elections .. I dont see any BJP leader at present who has that aura .. Atalji was the only charismatic leader and hopefully a young leader will emerge in BJP in this 5 years .. Nitish Kumar is emerging as a mass leader but I dont think he will be projected as a PM candidate in 2014 3) Advaniji and BJP called Manmohan Singh a weak and lame PM and insulted him infront of the whole country. This was not accepted by the Indian masses who has always respected their PM to some extent being in a democracy. Again refer to first point. Congress gained most against Left and third front parties. BJP lost on local issues to congress. But I agree BJP attacked Manmohan Singh more than speaking about alternatives. MMS was the PM of the country and hence represting the people of the nation when he was attacked .. personal attacks were made on him which did not go well with the nation.. Manmohan has far better education than most other leaders in India .. he is a highly educated economic reformist and a good person at heart too.. so attacking him while he remained the PM of the nation was not desirable .. and he was attacked not only by Advaniji but by small party workers which never went well with our democracy which respects the PM as the head of the nation It was senseless attack .. there is a difference between Advaniji criticizing him as a PM but even the small BJP workers were insulting him and BJP promoted it .. it could never go well with a democracy For example, just imagine if Vajpayee was the PM of the nation and a normal Congress leader insulted him, then how would the country react.. obviously they would never be happy.. similarly attack on MMS while PM also did not go well with masses 4) BJP's whole election campain was in a mess and there was no mention of developement in their whole campaign. The campains were not based on developement .. for example none of the TV ads had any mention of developement for the country once they comes to power .. they were more so as negative ads instead of positive developemental ads 5) Internal conflict within the BJP where there was fight between two of the top three leaders - Arun Jaitley and Rajnath Singh until a few weeks of the elections. Definitely would have hurt. Both should be sent into mass campaign in rural areas of UP, Rajasthan etc. Jaitley should probably focus in Andhra where the opposition space is wide open for BJP after the trouncing of TDP. I seriously believe that Arun Jaitley is a leader who has mass appeal.. he is educated and takes wise decisions .. maybe he should be projected as PM candidate in the next elections .. but I dont know if the fight inside BJP will end easily because only then will this be possible.. Rajnath does not appeal to anybody and it would be a grave mistake if he is experimented in next election 6) NDA failed to get good coalitions and retain its coalition and it was also one of the significant reasons for the loss. BJP was banking on post poll allies. It also made a mess of existing alliances by giving in to whims of partners like Shiv Sena and Akali Dal. Shiv Sena must be told to go its own way if it does not mend ways. Shiv Sena is a dead horse after the end of Bal Thakerey .. MNS might take its place instead (which I also hate because MNS is based on regionalism) .. BJP will have to win allies .. but the problem is that political parties knows that they might have to face disaster by joining BJP as an ally .. the best thing is that BJP works from the grass roots now and lets go off the things like hindutva which are irrelevant to people of the 21st century .. they will have to realize that it is the 21st century and Indians have become educated .. literacy rate will increase with time and developement will continue irrespective to whoever is in the centre .. so these issues like religion, caste etc. will not make sense to any educated person in the 21st century .. so BJP has to work on the grass roots and reform all the policies which are irrelevant to the 21st century These are some of the signifant factors resulting in BJP's loss in Elections 2009
