Aussies cant play the short ball!

watching all the short balls today raises an interesting point- what can a batsmen do when bowlers keep bowling short whilst there is a fielder out on the hook. If he attempts the shot and gets caught by the man out on the boundary he has fallen into the bowlers trap. But can he keep just letting the balls go- how would he stamp any authority on the bowler and especially if there is a strong pace bowling line up in the team- even if one bowler get tired after putting in all the energy bouncer balls then another will just take his place and for the batsman the short pitch deliverys continue. What do you guys think a batsman should do to try and discourage or counter this type of strategy?

rarely do bowlers bowl the short stuff continuously. as a bowler myself, a short pitched delivery is best use as a surprise weapon. you prepare the batsmen by bowling length stuff, or just short of length at a comfortable height... let him gain some muscle memory, and then throw in the short stuff with the field appropriately set. it is then that the batsman might mistime his shot. steadily bowling short stuff is counterintuitive. any decent batsman would simply evade the rising delivery and make no attempts to score off off it. true, scoring might come to a grinding hault, but few batsmen would mind that... the objective is to stay in the middle and score of the bad deliveries, and there would be a handful of those. well directed short stuff is not easy to maintain. there will be the wayward, away from the body short stuff that can be quite docile to a batsman accustomed to upper cuts. at the end of the day, i think that while short stuff is useful, in a test series against a side with established batsmen, it can be used effectively on a total of one occasion only. it does not take much to prepare for it. yeah you might be surprised the first time you face a short pitched delivery, but the later innings are not going to be as successful for the bowler if the batsman is quick to learn from his mistakes.

A lot of the balls that they were hooking or pulling or tried to, I think players like SRT and Dravid would have left alone. You have to hunker down and cut out horizontal bat shots when your team is in trouble. I am surprised Aussies played that way.

I hate to be a spoilsport, but I had no disagreements with what Nasser had said at the time. He simply said the new Indian batsmen had been found out...which is absodamnlutely true. Trust me, if Raina was playing at lords in this match, he would be hopping all over...did you even see the pace at which the England bowlers were bowling on an average. There was some serious pace there. I agree with Nasser only because, our batter's struggled in T20 of all games against the short pitch stuff. T20 allows only 1 bouncer per over, if the batter's can't deal with that then I am sorry they will struggle in test match cricket against bowlers on pitches such as these. SRT, Dravid and all will be able to handle the short pitch stuff...but I doubt Raina, RS(Maybe if he gets his head straight), jadeja,Gambhir(to a point) would be able to handle what England bowlers dished out last evening. Hussey's way of playing really showed the technique to be used to play short stuff. Loved the way how he left the high ones or the ones too close to pull. Just my 2 dirhams!

IIRC, it was 2nd or 3rd test when they started to sorta tease sachin that he can't pull or hook...he left a few and ducked but after the clever auz media, it got to him and he pulled few and then finally got out I remember that highlights package on ESPN

yep he is good but seems little too anti-indian possible coz of his Indian connection

eHe constantly slams indian team. Its not subtle and not accurate. He has a complex about India. This is probably fuelled by being half indian and so feels a need to over compensate in proving he is english. It is not just these comments. When we toured England he was constantly slamming and take pee out of indian team. p.s Nasser we won the series and england have not won a test series against India in 13 years

Here you are clealry saying oz media got to sachin and made him play certain shots based on what the media said. What evidence do you have of this? What articles or broadcasts did he see that forced him in to playing shots to prove him wrong? Are you a mind reader?

From that series, 2nd game End of over 69 (2 runs) India 212/8 (trail by 193 runs) GD McGrath 17-3-32-2 (3nb) - Members End SR Tendulkar 116* (190b 9x4 1x6) A Kumble 14* (36b) 69.1 Fleming to Tendulkar, OUT: short ball pullled but straight to the man at deep backward square leg ====================== This happened right after the controversial Sachin duck LBW McGrath, which prompted the AUS media to save harpers decision and they put forth the notion that Sachin usually ducks and it was his doing The above is form 2nd test, 1st innings and Sachin hooked and pull, to our benefit, sachin scored and some of it was scratchy and eventually got out but it was right after that weird dismissal in the 1st test It was also in TOI ( print ) ------------ PS When someone is smart enough to ask abt articles etc, this was back in 99/00 where they barely started ball by ball commentary and good luck searching tendulkar in google

I didn't see that so I wont judge. All I have seen of him is this Ashes series and I have to say I think he makes a lot of sense.
