Tendulkar's final onslaught

Sachin Tendulkar's 138 was his sixth hundred in 38 innings in finals, and it pushed his overall average in such matches up to an impressive 55.54. In his last three finals, he has notched up scores of 117 not out, 91 and 138, and India have won each of those matches. In all, Tendulkar has scored 1833 runs in finals, which is easily the highest - Sanath Jayasuriya is next with 1613. Tendulkar also ranks very high in terms of all-time averages in finals: among those who've scored at least 500 runs in finals, only three have a higher average. One of them is India's current coach, Gary Kirsten - in 20 innings, he scored 1019 runs at an excellent average of 69.73. Tendulkar's stats are very similar to those of Viv Richards, who averaged 55.73 at a strike rate of 84.78 in 17 finals. Brian Lara, on the other hand, has struggled in finals, averaging only 28.16, more than 12 runs below his career average. His one century and two fifties all came in his first four innings; in his last 14 finals, his highest score was 35. The Man-of-the-Match award was Tendulkar's 59th in ODIs, and his eighth in finals. It was also his 14th Player-of-the-Series award. Tendulkar leads the all-time list in both categories - he is 11 clear of the second-placed Jayasuriya in the match awards and three ahead in the series awards. Source: Cricinfo

I think they should also factor in the deciding match of any bilateral ODI series that we have played. All the time, the Indian team gets mocked for its inept performances in tournaments finals involving more than 2 teams since 2000, but in the same time-line, we have also had our golden era in ODIs, in terms of overall win % and number of wins in bilateral series. I wonder what Sachin’s average will be, if we factor in the deciding match of those series. Sachin had a rough patch in finals in the early 2000s, whether it be the WC finals in 2003 or his lack of runs in multiple tournaments we played against Asian teams in Asia (Remember the 45 all out embarrassment bestowed upon us by Murali or the times we used to pinged out by guys like Azhar Mahmood). And till say 2006, he did not do much to correct that ‘rabbits-in-front-headlights’ image. But, his performances in high pressure situations since the England tour of 2007 (which was for all practical purposes, our first comeback tournament after the WC ’07 debacle) has been outstanding, whether it be in tests or ODIs.

I have always been hackled by sachin-critics who site that he is not a man for the finals and I could never come up with an argument that could trump any rebuttal and make them accept that he is THE man and its the team that he got that did not back him up. This list undoubtedly proves on of my greatest beliefs - players like Ricky Ponting, Matt Hayden, etc. had the backing of a great team that won them the matches - unlike GOD, who won matches for india single handedly.

LOL...your verbiage kinda shows that you are watching a lot a heavy porn, - in your fetishes- yesterdays match would count as one...while your fantasy was still on the wicket. Strange creature . Hope you can control your emotions upto the champions trophy for 10 more days. Dsigusting. You must be retarded enough to beleive that, that " one innings" is just another final .
