Astrology/Jyotishi - How real/accurate is it, if at all.

Daisy most of the guys here taking strong positions are 20 y.o kids with no real life experiences or very limited ones. They don't really know how life can bring someone to their knees and make them look for any help. If it helps the person find solace, I absolutely think that it is the right thing. All of us ask for peace more than anything else.
What I am saying is that as LOT of people turn to GOD for this hope/faith thing...similarly other people turn to astrology for the same thing. So when I said double standards, what I meant was that CG is saying astrology is hogwash and God is not. I am not criticizing people for believing in either of those, I am just saying in the end it is fundamentally the same thing. My parents believe in both God and they also take advice of swamis from time to time, and I don't have a problem with that.

coming from an experienced person like you' date= dont you think the above statement is a gross generalization..even if a person is in his mid twenties he might have come across certain experiences in life which would have shaken him a lot and led to believe what he believes right now. i do agree with your second part in the above post, but it is not necessary for a horrific incident to change a persons view point. Well if it does, then i would just say that whatever he/she believed in at the first place was not his original stance.
1) Read my post carefully, I said "most" not "all". 2) Yes that could be the case but some things you learn from these experiences are that you never too strong a position on any topic as there is no perfect answer. And that is not borne out in this thread so far. 3) I am not contending anyone's position is right or wrong in this thread. I am just supporting the right to believe what they want without being branded "stupid". This has been the purpose of this thread from the OP. It has left no room for an educated discussion as one point of view has been touted as clearly the more "intelligent" one.

No objections to your view. The post was not really directed at you specifically.

hmm fair enough. But ok let me ask you this then, i have no problems in believing in something but dont you feel that letting oneself being exploited by the so called astrologers is too much. I mean ok the person feels that doing such an act would bring hope as well as the desired result to him, but seriously cant he just ask a question to himself "Does the God whom i believe in is asking me to do this?"

I don't believe in those Sadhu type astrologers but my past was told correctly by an educated astrologer from Madras ( i wish I could find him ) and 11 years ago he predicted me settling in West Coast of North America - in computers. I laughed at him as there no chance I would end up here. My marriage age and divorce was also predicted ( which i wasnt told abt )

I used to love reading reports. It fed my narcissistic appetite. Nowadays, I don't do that, because now I am not too sure about "fate".

Surely....such accurate prediction could not have been firing in the dark, and so astrology is not rubbish, most astrologers are, innit ?

People amazed by correct astrological predictions should read the book "Fooled by randomness" or at least read about "Black swan events". It just might bring you back from the 5th century to 21 st. :hehe:
