India, Pakistan in different groups for World Cup

India and Pakistan, Australia and South Africa find themselves in different groups for the 2011 World Cup. The groupings for the tournament, to be held on the subcontinent, were approved on the second day of the ICC Board meeting in Johannesburg. The 14 teams have been divided into two groups of seven. At the meeting, the ICC also lauded the success of the World Cup's miniature version, the ICC Champions Trophy, which had earlier won the endorsement of Ricky Ponting and Daniel Vettori. "I think most experts of the game and the opinion-makers are now convinced the ICC Champions Trophy definitely has a place in the cricket calendar," David Morgan, the ICC President, said. "It also gives me immense pleasure to say the quality of cricket we have seen in the last 14 days proves that 50-over format can comfortably co-exist with the traditional five-day Test and the short 20-over formats."

In Group A there will be: Australia Pakistan New Zealand Sri Lanka Zimbabwe Canada Kenya In Group B there will be: India South Africa England West Indies Bangladesh Ireland Netherland

I think they make the world cup very interesting. Every time they cause at least one upset. That makes the tournament even more unpredictable. What better way to encourage them than let them beat a few of the biggies in the biggest event of all? Besides, I think we should get the minnows into the CT as well and make CT a knock out tournament. I bet there wil be quite a few upsets.

The *****est format is back. 7 teams in each group and 4 teams from each group go to the quarterfinals, then the semis and then the finals. Group A has Zim, Canada and Kenya which makes it really easy for the 4 test teams to make it to the next round and apart from a upset by BD or ireland, the same is true for group B. This basically makes the league games a big bore and the rest a lottery, Just like in 96.

even if they do cause an upset or two,what would it mean?they r never gonna win the world cup or CT so why bother.n why deny the good team the chance to be in contention of winning it by having one bad day as u r suggesting? about the encouraging them,i'm all for it but not in WCs.let them tour the big nations,play with thier A teams or even main teams.make it mandatory for big teams to tour them once in a while. but not in WC.Even if they do cause upsets,it'll be in front of empty crowds.do u want that for 18 matches?

It's a similar format like WC 2003. 2 Groups where top 3 from each group advance to Super Six, then Semis and Penultimate game. Our group is relatively easier compared to Pakistan.

I don't think so. Super 8 has been scrapped off by the ICC after WC 07 debacle.

If you have a bad day in a tournament like the WC, you will lose. If the day is so bad that you can lose to a minnow, you simply don't deserve to win the cup. One can not hide behind bad days. Every sports event is like that. You have a bad day, you get knocked out. Cricket is no different. In a tournament like the WC, you don't get multiple chances to cancel out luck.

So its 96' all over again, with a couple of minnows added. Its great the quarter- finals are back, more like the feel of a WC, but boy there are gonna be some boring one-sided group games.
