Praveen’s haul puts UP on top Bivabasu Kumar, Hindustan Times Pune, December 01, 2009 First Published: 23:05 IST(1/12/2009) Last Updated: 23:06 IST(1/12/2009) Maharashtra will have the consolation of registering their highest first innings total at home this season, but they will also rue succumbing to Praveen Kumar (6-68) and RP Singh (2-50) in their clash against Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. Despite offering several half chances and innumerable flying edges, Maharashtra seemed to make a statement as they posted 292 on Day One. The early morning dew, a lost toss and three slips and a gully to begin with are worrying symbols for a side sent in to bat. Despite a watchful beginning, Maharashtra lost two wickets in the first session before limping back to normalcy. Skipper Harshad Khadiwale was the first to go, caught fishing outside off stump against Bhuvneshwar Kumar. His partner Rohan Bhosale got out in similar fashion off Praveen to leave the team at a precarious 45 for two. Sangram Atitkar and Kedar Jadhav ensured they didn’t repeat the mistakes committed by the opening duo. Both displayed deft footwork in their combative innings of 55 and 49 respectively. Atitkar, who was dropped against Karnataka, showed controlled aggression and added 106 runs with Jadhav. The duo refused to give in to the UP seamers, who peppered them with a bouncer in almost every over. Atitkar was sublime in his ground shots. He sent some screaming cover drives off RP Singh and even tonked Praveen Kumar over his head. Jadhav, who started slowly, was taking a toll on the UP bowlers when misfortune struck. RP teased Jadhav with a fullish delivery outside off and surprised him with a full toss in the next. The batsman was a fraction late with his shot and Suresh Raina took a simple catch at short leg. Maharashtra suffered two serious blows when Praveen uprooted Ankit Bawne’s stumps and followed it up with Atitkar’s wicket. The hosts pulled back through Rohit Motwani (57) and Ganesh Gaikwad (63). The two stitched together 107 in another useful partnership to bolster the team’s total.

Punjab on a high after Gony sends HP packing Manpreet Gony (5 for 47) bowled another fiery spell to hand Punjab the initiative at the end of Day One against Himachal at the PCA Stadium on Tuesday. More... Punjab on a high after Gony sends HP packing Ashutosh Sharma, Hindustan Times Mohali, December 01, 2009 First Published: 23:02 IST(1/12/2009) Last Updated: 23:03 IST(1/12/2009) Manpreet Gony (5 for 47) bowled another fiery spell to hand Punjab the initiative at the end of Day One against Himachal at the PCA Stadium on Tuesday. Winning an important toss for the second consecutive time, Punjab skipper Pankaj Dharmani had no hesitation in putting the opposition in on a lively wicket. Punjab opened with the medium pace of Love Ablish and Harmeet Bansal and the hosts straightaway reaped the benefits of bowling in overcast conditions. Ablish cleaned up opener Bhavin Thakkar in the third over with the scoreboard on eight. Himachal got another jolt when Ablish disturbed Paras Dogra’s wickets. At 24 for two, the visitors’ hopes hinged on Sangram Singh and Vinit Indulkar. In the 11th over, Ablish had Sangram poking at a ball outside off and Himachal slid further. With Ablish doing the damage in the first hour, the stage was set for Punjab to launch an all-out attack. Gony replaced Bansal and peppered the batsmen with bouncers and swung the ball both ways. The combination of Gony and Uday Kaul ended Mukesh Sharma’s (12) stay when Kaul took a sharp catch at silly point. Ajay Mannu and Rishi Dhawan departed in quick succession and Himachal were tottering at 77 for six. At the other end, Indulkar kept the scoreboard ticking and found an able partner in Kuldeep Diwan. The duo applied themselves to realize a 87-run partnership. Indulkar fell to Gony for well-made 60 while Diwan carried his bat through and ended with 56. After Indulkar’s departure, wickets fell at regular intervals and Himachal were bundled out for 197. In reply, Punjab openers Ravi Inder Singh and Vishwas Bhalla fell to seamers Vikramjeet Malik and Ashok Thakur as the hosts slumped to 24 for two. Brief scores: Himachal 1st inn: 197 all out (V. Indulkar 60, K Diwan not out 56; M Gony 5-47, L Ablish 3-57) vs Punjab 1st inn: 37 for 2.

Arun Karthik enabled Tamil Nadu reach 323 for five against Orissa at close on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Group ‘A’ Super League match at the Veer Surendra Sai Stadium here on Tuesday. Arun, who came in at No. 3, hit his third century in his ninth game. Giving him company was C. Ganapathy (52), and the duo put on an unbroken 103-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Arun’s superb knock was the cornerstone on which the Tamil Nadu innings was built. Ganapathy, who went in just before tea at 220 for five, and Arun dominated the final session with aplomb. During this period, Arun square drove left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh to the third man fence to complete his century. Arun hit 16 boundaries. Ganapathy’s nearly two-hour stay at the wicket produced 52 runs off 94 balls with three sixes and as many fours. Uneven bounce Earlier Tamil Nadu opened cautiously, after winning the toss, on a pitch that had uneven bounce. Yet, Anirudha played some pleasing shots in front and square of the wicket, while Abhinav Mukund was ill at ease, failing to adjust to the conditions. Tamil Nadu lost Mukund (14) at 40 in the 12th over taken behind off Debasis Mohanty. The batsman stood his ground in a show of dissent for which he was summoned by the match referee at tea and cautioned. After adding another 49 runs for the second wicket, Anirudha played back to a faster one from Dhiraj and was adjudged leg before for a well-compiled 53 (116m, 70b, 7x4, 1x6). Skipper Dinesh Karthik walked in at 89 for two in the 23rd over but did not last long. Tamil Nadu took lunch at 117 for three in 32 overs. Arun and Prasanna, who came in for S. Suresh Kumar, added 49 for the fourth wicket before R. Satish, a replacement for S. Badrinath, joined Arun. Sathish played a cameo, willing to loft the balls. The pair put on 71 runs for the fifth wicket in which Satish contributed 43 as against Arun’s 25. Sathish perished driving part-time bowler Pravanjan Mallick for 43 (77m, 64b, 7x4, 1x6). Flop show Railways bowl defensive Gujarat out for 91, posers on Parthiv’s decision to send a leg-spinner to open the batting By Prasanth Menon Posted On Wednesday, December 02, 2009 at 03:23:51 AM In Valsad: The Moghabhai cricket ground is no Headingley or Oval where the ball will dart around all day. But the way Gujarat batsmen negotiated the Railways bowlers on the first day of their Ranji Trophy match on Tuesday, it seemed like they were playing in England. The wicket was aiding seam movement but it was not unplayable. But Gujarat batsmen made the Railways bowlers look like the sultans of swing bowling. The hosts, Gujarat, scored just 91 in their first innings off 58.2 overs. In reply, Railways were 61 for one at stumps playing 31 overs. Gujarat started their batting with a defensive approach. Timil Patel walked in to open the innings with Jay Desai. True, Gujarat has been facing problems at the top of the order for the last two seasons. But sending a leg-spinner, who bats a bit, to open is not expected from a side eyeing a quarter-final berth in Ranji Trophy. Timil hung around for 204 minutes. He faced 139 balls. But his painstaking 31 hardly served any purpose. He blocked everything that came his way and built undue pressure on the team. Timil and Jay saw off the first hour of play without any damage. But just after the first drinks break, thinks began to fall apart for Gujarat. Jay (7) slashed a wide delivery from seamer Santhosh Saxena to the wicket-keeper’s gloves. Niraj Patel became Saxena’s second victim as he left without troubling the scorers. Struggling Parthiv In walked Gujarat’s man of crisis Parthiv Patel. He found strike hard to come by with Timil blocking every ball. The Gujarat skipper didn’t look at his fluent best in his 44-minute stay and was snared by Siddharth Gehlot for eight. Gehlot also accounted for Bhavik Thaker, castling him with a beauty. At lunch, Gujarat were 49/4. Things went from bad to worse for the hosts after the lunch as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Rujul Bhatt edged one into the slips for nine. Timil’s laborious existence ended soon after. Railway’s Sanjay Bangar cleaned up the tail to bowl out Gujarat for below hundred. Parthiv said after the match, “There is nothing to explain for such a shoddy batting. True, the wicket was helping the bowlers a bit but it certainly was not a pitch where we should have been bowled out for 91.” The Railways batsmen showed how to bat on such a track. They negotiated the swing and waited for lose deliveries to punish. Gujarat now has their back against the wall and as Parthiv said, their only hope is to pick up some early wickets on Wednesday morning. “We cannot concede defeat on day one. It will be difficult, but we will try to claw our way back,” said a dejected skipper. Brief scores: Gujarat first innings 91 all out in 58.2 overs (Timil Patel 31, Siddharth Trivedi 10; Sanjay Bangar 3/17, Santosh Saxena 3/19) Railways first innings 61 for one in 31 overs (Sanjay Bangar 31*, Faiz Fazal 13; Siddharth Trivedi 1/29)

Manish Pandey and Sathish Ganesh rise to the occasion VADODARA: Karnataka batsmen rose to the occasion after being put to test on a lively Motibaug track, accumulating runs briskly against Baroda’s seam attack to score 335 for three on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Super League. Captain Robin Uthappa lost the toss, but stayed long enough at the crease to notch up his highest score in four games — a stroke-filled 58 off 74 balls. Manish Pandey dealt with the bowling on his own terms, hitting ten boundaries and two sixes for an unbeaten 93 off 147 balls. Pandey and Sathish Ganesh (94 not out, 238 balls, 11 fours) were involved in a rollicking 175-run stand for the fourth wicket, frustrating the bowlers with swift singles also. Pandey was game for the short-pitched stuff while Ganesh’s driving was a treat to watch. Breakthrough Earlier, Baroda got its first wicket when opener K. Pawan perished in an attempt to square cut Munaf Patel. The speedster had then troubled Uthappa with bounce, but the snick flew high over the first slip The Karnataka skipper survived some anxious moments and went on the offensive against skipper Irfan Pathan, launching into cover-drives, apart from well-timed flicks to the square-leg fence off the other bowlers. The 61-run second wicket stand between Uthappa and Ganesh took the bite out of Baroda’s early offensive. Murutza Vahora gained movement but swung the ball too much to trouble the batsmen. Yusuf Pathan was hit across the line by Pandey, celebrating a chance at 15, with back-to-back sixes over square leg. The home team’s boxing limitations were exposed on the first day itself. Stuart Binny replaced B. Akhil in the visitor’s squad, the only change from last week’s away game against Maharashtra. The scores: Karnataka —1st innings: K. Pawan b Munaf 14, R. Uthappa c Shah b Panchal 58, S. Ganesh (batting) 94, A. Verma c Shah b Irfan 33, M. Pandey (batting) 93. Extras (b-16, lb-15, nb-5, w-7) 43. Total (for three wkts. in 90 overs): 335.
