How good was Ajay Jadeja acc. you in his playing days?

Recommended Posts

Its a shame that ICF did not exist when Ajay Jadeja was playing, and niether was he a Kapil Dev for old timers to get nostalgic about him every now and then. So here is the question - Did you like Ajay Jadeja when he was playing for India? any other thoughts about him? Killer Question - Do you think he would have got a spot in the ODI team, if he was in the kind of form he had during 97-99? ODI record - batting Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave SR 100 50 4s 6s Ct St 196 179 36 5359 119 37.47 69.80 6 30 366 85 59 0 (dravid's strike rate is 71.17:hehe:)

He would get in my team, if only for the reason that he was the one Indian player who could hurl so many choicest abuses on Pakistanis that even the streetmen from Lahore were embarassed. There is that incident in a match where Aaqib Javed kept abusing Sachin till the latter went to him and politely asked him not to do it, Aaqib also tried the same with Jadeja and he responded immediately with the worst, and in my opinion best, this world had to offer to his Mother lol. In both cases Aaqib did not sledge again but I would prefer Jadeja's modus operandi. How good was he? Quite good really. As a batsman he was a useful middle order batsman, decent enough to open at times. I wont put him in the ranks of Yuvraj and Dhoni, probably a shade under them. As a fielder he was fantastic, could match Azharuddin anywhere in the field and thats saying something. Also was a useful bowler. Very competitive cricketer, played with a terrific smile. Would be in my team at number 6. xxx

He was a street smart cricketer. A real fighter. He was an amazing batsman under pressure. On more than one occasion he came in with a high required RR and chased down with amazing ease. He never looked technically good, but he batted with determination and could score runs quite fast. He had a carefree attitude while batting which intimidated bowlers. Some of his partnerships with Robin Singh were good. He was one of the best fielders in the team alongside Azhar. And again, he was a street smart cricketer. I remember once the ball was going quite far away from him and the batsman was trying to steal a quick single. Jadeja knew he could never reach the ball in time. He just dived and acted as if he collected the ball and threw at the bowlers end. Both batsmen stopped in the middle of the pitch.

Oh yes. Jadeja met the maa-bahen abuses from Pakis with some real good abuses back. And that was at a time when the rest of the Indian team were gentlemen. Tendulkar and Dravid were extremely sober, Ganguly was new, Robin Singh never abused much, Srinath, Prasad, Kumble- they all were too timid. But Jadeja would never fall behind when it came to abuses.

I remember that one. He was actually pretty cool, he used to make a lot of jokes with all the players in the field. Maybe he would been a decent test player if he had some motivation...

Excellent player under pressure. He can win you matches without boundaries if necessary. Not that he is not capable of hitting boundaries. But amazing timer of the ball. Once he just swatted Waqar like a fly ball went out of the ground. This was after 1996 world cup. And also can't forget last ball six against South Africa at Mumbai. My most memorable moment was when he stitched together a partnership of 220 odd without breaking any sweat from a precarious position. I would kill for someone like Jadeja at no.7 position.

Is that the innings in Cuttack? He played magnificently in that series. Won the man of the series, but if I remember right, did not get a single MOM.

Jadeja was one of the best middle order finishers in the game during his time. Some of the Azhar-Jadeja partnerships were of the highest quality you will see in the middle order, none better than the one in Sri Lanka where they brought India to within 1 run of victory from 70 odd for 4 chasing 305. Don't just go by looking at his numbers - he played a few matches as an opener and wasn't a huge success there. Also, the SRs from his time today have probably increased by 5 points across the board. If you look at his numbers excluding the opening slot, his SR goes up to 75+, which was pretty good in those days. He would certainly find a spot in the current Indian team at number 7 - great finisher, superb fielder, and a handy part timer. Perfect for the ODI game.

Wow' date=' that must have been a seriously good partnership, top order collapsed and a mammoth total in front of you.[/quote'] Azharuddin is the best "2" specialist i have ever seen. His flicks towards leg umpire would invariably get him 2 runs. Difficult to set field for him. Before you know he would be 50 in 50 balls.

It was in Premadasa stadium chasing 302 and fell short by 2 runs. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/64557.html Azahar just 5 fours Jadeja just 8 fours and a six. But their strike rate was more than 90.
it was another version of the sachin's 175 disaster match - lots of effort only to wasted in the end. The only difference is that since Sachin is more liked, the defeat is more painful...

i did not see azhar before 94'... so i dont know how he was in his prime, but based on the videos I feel Laxman has taken the flick shot to a completely new level from where azhar left. Also i feel that azhar can switch to a very aggressive mode when needed...smthg vvs did not do often.

i have not seen enough to know about his 2's. But I definitely remember the wristy flicks, pure class. How would you compare Dhoni's ability to pick 2's to Azhar?

He could place the balls at impossible angles with mere flick of wrists. For a skinny fellow he had immense power with lightest bat. I have seen that guy live in Chennai. The sound of bat hitting the ball was like a music no matter where you sit on the ground. Sometimes the sound was inaudible. Such was his timing.
