We don't need Gambit's brother (Sambit & Gambit' date=' didn't you notice?) to tell us all this stuff. we have known all along that Veeru is the best.[/quote'] Thank you Saheb. But Gambit ko chhod do abhi please. He has painfully accepted that Veeru has no parallel. Let our dear brother just wallow on SRT playing slowly and steadily to build a volume of runs and tons owing to sheer longetivity..for thats what makes a great player. Does not matter that a majority of those runs din't even have the D of domination. For domination is the least important criteria in defining great players.

Aao thakur. Stop being so possessive about Veeru. :cantstop: I've been advocating for him before you came here so your claim about me being a Veeru bagger has no merit to it. PS - Veeru averages 40 outside Asia. Ab rona mat. :notsmiley:

Thats an idiotic post born out of jealousy towards India! Gavaskar is 3 and Laxman is 4. The rest should shuffle down 1
ho no yuvi and dhoni are more destructive than gavaskar and laxman.... any doubt over it? if yes, i can give you some stats a la samit bal....

I don't think he is looking at overall batting qualities of both batsmen. Just the "destructive" part. Even on a flat track scoring 133 in a session against a decent team is not easy.

Admittedly he hasn't been at his best in RSA and NZ but he averages almost 60 in Australia from 2 tours and 40 as an opener in England ( where he has just played 1 series) . I am sure he'll make up for it.

I think tendulkar is the best batsman ever and sehwag has to be the second... yuvi and dhoni are just behind at number three and four.... then we have the lara' date=' richards etc......[/quote'] go and talk about toffee kumar, khatmal bros, sasur kumar and all those u have in ur team who avg half of sehwag in tests in the **** websites you have and spare us your intellectually emancipiated post

sehwag is the best batsman after Bradman not Richards Dear DarkGotenksXI, Ponting is not even a gambir. he is most selfish player in the world. He is also a cheater appealing for pitch catches. He is not even qualified to be called cricketer. cricket is gentleman's game not for cheaters like ponting or any aussie

NZ yes but RSA is a tough place. Their bowlers were never as good as the Australians but their pitches make them out to be monsters. They also exploit his tendency to flash outside off stump very well with their judicious line. Nel did this really well in 2006 when Veeru was a failure. But Veeru has changed for the better now and is very watchful during first 15 mins of his innings. Let's see what happens next year.

Do you remember what kind of a pitch we got in 2003. And also in the current tour most of his shots were suicidal.Hitting vettori in the air. Then he tried to play some fancy shot. Viv Richards doesn't have a great himself in NZ. Veeru was grossly out of form when he went second time. Dinesh Karthik averages 101 in South Africa. What is the big deal in averaging in SA as if it is the ultimate place.

I swear..I am not trying to go off topic. But it is precisely this plan, that RSA set up for SRT. His record there is not great. A superb 169 in tow with Azhar..but Cronje and Co planned very well for him. IN this case ..with the ball that nips back into him. I think with Gambhir playing the way he has been and his " setting" with Veeru ..Veeru is a smarter operator. They both complement each other brilliantly. Gambhir knows what makes Veeru tick and vice versa.

I think we are veering away from the core of the topic. It is not just about "who is averaging" more in what ground. It is about who is laying the bowling to waste like there is no tomorrow.

Disagree. Historically RSA pitches have been tougher for our batters in tests than Australia. Even the great Dravid struggles here.

Lets face it. Most of us have hardly seen Richards live in a Test match. Some of us may have seen him towards the end of his career. Most of what we know of Richards is based on what we saw in highlight tapes and read in cricket literature. Besides, we have all grown up believing that Viv is the most explosive batsman ever. Add to that the belief that Viv was the most gutsy batsman ever and the attack in the 70s and 80s when Richards was at his pomp was far superior than that of the modern era. Hence we are rooted to our stereotypical perceptions that no batsman can be more dominant than Viv. But as science has taught us, we have to draw our conclusions on the merit of the evidence that is emerging in front of us. Lets visit some of the points that are cited in favor of Richards. 1) Viv never wore a helmet: There is no question that Viv was never afraid to go out there without a helmet & hook, pull fast bowlers without fear. But this (alone) hardly makes a batsman dominant. Granted, Viv was fearless. But so was Gavaskar. Is it fair to deduce that Gavaskar was as dominant a batsman because he faced hostile bowlers (infact more hostile than Viv), without a helmet ? Simple answer is that helmet or the lack of it does not make a batsman dominant. Modern day players have access to special gears that batsmen in the 70s and 80s did not have. Wouldnt you take advantage of all the protection you can get, if you have a lot of $$$ riding on your career ? How many of you go to India without taking all possible preventive vaccinations here ? How many of you decline a preventive flu shot because you are healthy ? How many of you ride a bike without a helmet ? How many drive a car without a seat belt ? Accidents are a reality in life. Even at a low probability, the risk they pose is big enough to warrant preventive measures. Its therefore common sense that modern day batsmen wear helmets. 2) Viv faced tougher odds: Its a fair argument that during Viv's time quality of fast bowling was high & the pitches were far more challenging. But has Sehwag only feasted on low quality opponents on flat pitches ? Not really. Sehwag has scored his runs everywhere against all comers. Viv never faced the great WI attack. Nor was he tested as much by quality spinners (he was very suspect against quality spin). He only faced Lilee, Thommo, Imran & the likes more often. For his part, Veeru has scored BIG 100s against McWarne, Murali-Mendis, Akhtar, Saqlain, Flintoff & the likes. 3) Viv's scoring rate and audacious stroke play: There is no doubt Viv scored quickly & showed utter disrespect for the bowling attack he faced. But Sehwag eclipses Viv interms of scoring rate and audaciousness. The sheer volume of runs, strike rate, variety of strokes (Jeez, reverse sweep in test matches!!) makes Sehwag pound for pound better in this aspect as well. 4) Viv was a match winner: So is Sehwag. Multan, Adelaide, Galle, Chennai etc are all examples of Veeru's match winning/saving efforts. Thats 4 diff opponents in 4 diff countries. The bottom line for me is that there is no compelling evidence that makes the comparison between Viv and Veeru a blasphemy. Infact to the contrary I find Veeru far more destructive, who wallops Viv interms of strike rate, the variety of bowlers he has flayed, the mamoth hundreds he has scored and the way he has turned matches on their head. I rest my case.

What did Richards do there? He never played didn't he?

go and talk about toffee kumar' date='khatmal bros, sasur kumar and all those u have in ur team who avg half of sehwag in tests in the **** websites you have and spare us your intellectually emancipiated post[/quote'] I actually joined this forum just because of that debate... Mr samit was ot letting me post on cricinfo... you know why? Just beucase i said that a stupid indian was bringing in false statistics, that man said , that tendulkar, ponting and lare scores century every 4.2 , 4.. etc innings... Man why you indian always make your cricketer bigger than what they are? I personnally think sehwag is a very good test opener, i also think thattendulkar is a great batsman, he is an all time great, better than all pakistani batsmen so far... But that doen't look enough for you indians, and the star talking about sehwag and richard in the same thread.... Are you going to apreciate if someone say that kevin iterssen is more destructive than sachin tendulkar even if he has a betterstrike rate? No, because they are just not the same class. So compare sehwag with players that are in the same class, he will end better than some, and then we can all have our own opinion, sehwag, graeme smith, ab devilliers, younis khan, ab devilliers, vvs laxman, mickeal clarke, mickal hussey, gautm ghambir, andrew strauss etc... but you just can't compare one of them with the likes of richards, tendulkar, lara, ponting, inzi, dravid... even f they are more destructive or more solid than one of them.... Tomorrow you will have sambit saying that ghambir is more solid than lara....

Bralliant write up bumps. Veeru is a UNPARALLED boundary hitter. Far more innovative. What sets him apart massive scores at a monsterous strike rate. No one even comes close in this measure.

Sambit bal has a propensity to indulge in hyperbole to please the audience that it is intended for. For example, what do you think of this article ? http://www.cricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/437429.html
