Andy Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 i tought when u compare batsmen u just talkabout test cricket... and logevity is not enough for someone to be greater than the other, that's surely something important but not all... tendulkar can make even 15000 test runs, he can be never as good as brian lara.... Any doubt on that??? Are u kidding??Tendulkar is the greatest batsman in last 50 years.Chck stats if u have!! Lara cant match his avg.Lara cant match his century scoring record.Lara cant match his consitency.Lara cant match his ODI performances!! Troll Alert!!:nervous:
Mr. Wicket Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 S.Bond is one of the most destructive posters we have had on ICF. Every time anyone reads a post of his, a few brain cells immediately get stupider from absorbing that nonsense and die away.
Sooda Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 HAHA. Whats your view on the Viv vs Sehwag debate, Mr Wicket? on both- a) Betterness b) Destructiveness
Sooda Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 In a way I feel were almost obliged to say that old timer greats are greater- the fact that we havent seen them and only read tales adds to their auras. Our children will not believe Sehwag was mortal.

akshayxyz Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Bowling facts.. Y cant u accept the fact?? The quality of batsmen have improved in this era!! Today the strike rates of batsmen have improved drastically. Just chck the number of balls batsmen face this days and the time u are talking abt.Its almost same!! The differance is dat, today's batsman score more frm equal number of deliveries dan they used to!! ......... Time for some bowling facts http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/content/records/93276.html I am tired of hearing - bowlers of yesteryears were harder to face, more dangerous, more bowler friendly tracks ... and so on. Refer to above link - and considering the parameters - economy, #wkts, #wkts/match,...modern age bowlers are no inferior than holding/lillee/hadlee etc. Just because previously more bouncers were allowed per over, does not mean that batsmen were more likely to get out. You have to be out of your mind that facing Wasim/Waqar or warne/McGrath/Lee or Murli/Waas was easier than playing the one in 70/80s. Consider also other parameters like using technology to find weaknesses in batsman's armors, and such other knowledge accumulated over time. Just like batsmen have invented shots, bowlers have extended their weaponry. I have no stats on this, but I guess e.g. reverse swing was known to only limited few teams/bowlers. Now every other team. Helmet or no helmet, You are more likely to get out to Murli than to Lillee or anyone. He takes 6 wicket (per match), better than the next best 5 (lilee) and also bowls more overs. Back to the topic - with more than 200 runs in a day (multiple times) at such a strike rate - Sehwag has created a special place for himself, on his own terms (no text book technique). Only a genius can achieve such a feet. being successful on parameters defined by purists without following the rulebook of technique.

vvvslaxman Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 How come in Tennis they are ready to accept Federer as the ultimate, before tha Sampras as the ultimate instead of sulking about the possible advantages they may have in the modern era?

Dont think anyone said that^ But facing Gul/Asif and Haurtiz/Siddle/Johnson and Herath/Weledegra is much easier than whoever from the 70's...
Andy Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Deceitful post! I like how you mention Gul but not Shoaib or Saqlain at Multan, Siddle and Johnson but not Lee and McGill at MCG, Herath but not Murali or Mendis at Galle. Or Steyn at chennai. One has to be incredibly dense to deny that Sehwag has faced a more varied and challenging attack than Viv who mostly feasted on woeful English medium pacers. And Mcrath,Warne,Kasprowich and Gillespie at chennai!!:king:
akshayxyz Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Dont think anyone said that^ But facing Gul/Asif and Haurtiz/Siddle/Johnson and Herath/Weledegra is much easier than whoever from the 70's... Agreed (but to limited extent). Asif is any day better than lot of older generation counterparts, but yes definitely not better than anyone best of his time. When people say 'those' bowlers were tougher to face, it was sort of implied that they are commenting about general level of competency of bowlers. Since people keep referring to holding/marshal/lilee/..., I had to quote some modern great bowlers to hint that cricket overall has evolved and its not just that batting has become easier. That includes fielding too, remember how many times Sachin got out to excellent catches - never seen before kind of, and more and more players are capable of such things. Besides, I would like to see some stats on 'who was bowling', whenever Richards was 'dominating'. Even if some of those innings came against Imran, I can very well say, may be Imran was having a bad day. Just the same way some one would say for this innings of Sehwag - Murli had an off day. However the fact is, Murli, Herath and whole Srilankan thinktank were using all their experience and still clueless against Sehwag's assault. If this is not destructive than what is? And Sehwag has done it more often than most others. On a side note - look at what Asif is doing in NZ. As they say, every dog has its day, but the point is you never know which day it is. Sehwag did not get any premonition that Murli would feed him on 2nd day (given the way Harbhajan bowled on first day, someone commented that pitch curator has prepared this as a gift for Murli). Which is why - primitive, average based (innings avg, avg strike rate etc.) statistics come into play. Try explaining some standard deviation, or even median / mode based stats to common public. There are players, there are games, there are runs and many such other numbers, comparisons are bound to happen. Some parameters are balanced, some are skewed/biased and some make no sense (e.g. only player to score 4000 runs and taken a 5 wicket haul in a match) But in this case (Sehwag vs Richards vs others) - it is not tough to understand that being able to sustain a 80+ strike rate for long innings, and doing so multiple times against different opponents, different situations - is fair enough measure of destructive capabilities of a batsman. Last point on comparing bowlers/players across eras - at any given time, best bowlers (players) of that time make it to the National eleven (perhaps barring few cases in India). At all times, technology and cumulative knowledge has helped to raise the competency levels ( and skills too) over the period of time. Would you not want to kill yourself if you hear - Pentium-1 was most power processor ever? If that is bad analogy, refer to sampras vs federer, or Christopher Reeves vs Ian Thorpe, and so on...
Pak_Forever Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Sehwag is better than Tendulkar. :--D All hail Sehwag!

Pak_Forever Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 You first. I want to see you hail the Sultan of Multan first. I think I already did by calling beast Sehwag better than Tendulkar. Can't give him a bigger complement than that. He deserves it! b/w with this comment you will probably get my point about that farce pointless comparison by Sambit. He keeps coming back with travesty articles. Richards simply got no match.

I have two questions for you though, first have you seen Richards play? Second, what aspect of Richards do you rate highly? Please don't come back with the baloney about helemts.
