So someone asked me the question we all dread -- "what sports are you guys good at? "...by 'you guys', she means 'us guys', ie india. And I said, uh, cricket, and...tennis? (doubles -- paes/damm are no 5. i think). and chess, and then the conversation got deflected to whether or not chess was a sport. so are there any obscure sports that we are good at? like, how did we do in the Kho-kho world championships? (hope yuvi wasn't playing) once we're out of sports that we're good at, we can move to the fun topic of why we suck at everything. (sorry, bored at work, and thought the 'other sports' board looked neglected...ironically)

Re: the dreaded question. We are extremely good at Polo, thanks to the fantastic Manipuris. We are kabaddi world champs. Hey wait, I'm proving your point. Obscure sports. Beta/beti bade huey nahi ki ma baap ne kahan doctor bano engineer bano. Lots of students do TP in the games/recreation period. We are quite a lazy bunch. We don't go cycling. We hardly do trekking. I guess its because we don't have a sporting/outdoor recreation culture in India. Which is where this problem stems from. People prefer to laze around on Saturday/Sunday afternoon, drink tea and watch social melodramas on television. In fact, we should be rather thankful for our Sachins and Leanders. Re: the dreaded question. the manipuri's play polo? how'd that happen? (I will steer clear of the shetland pony joke, in case someone here is from manipur and can kick my ass) I thought polo was confined to the raja-maharaja's of jaipur-udaipur-scindiaville-etc.

Earlier it was believed that the game was originated from PERSIA during the period of some 525 years B.C. but according to the latest findings of the English Guinness Book of World Records it has now been declared that MANIPUR is the real place from where the game had actually originated, and therefore she has been named as the ?Home of Polo?. Locally the game is of course, known as ?Sagol-Kangjei?, sagol for Horse and Kangjei for hockey stick. It has a very ancient origin which is traced to a period as early as some 3100 years Before Christ. According to the Mythology of Manipur the Sylvan gods (the Umang Lais) headed by Marjing, Thangjing, Wangbrel, Khoriphaba etc. played the game in the beginning and then had been handed down to the people from generation to generation.

Re: the dreaded question. Been a while since i was asked the "dreaded question". Some African tool was bragging about his non-descript country's (i think he was Nigerian) sporting achievements, and i laughed him off. He (quite rudely) asked me "so wot da fok has ur contry eva done ?". Apart from the usual cricket bakwass, my response was something along the lines of; - India are one of the greatest field hockey teams of all time. Told him that the team has won 8 Olympic Gold medals and 1 World Cup. - In tennis, India are the best country in Asia. At one point, India had a tennis player (Krishanan senior) ranked in the top 10 (pre Open era). He also was a Wimbledon semifinalist two years in a row and was regularly seeded in the top 5 for that tournament. Krishnan jr. made the QF's of Grand Slams all the time during the 80's and once knocked out no.1 seeded Mats Wilander at the Australian open in straight sets. Also told him that Bhupathi-Paes are one the greatest doubles pairing ever and together they won three grandslam doubles titles (French Open twice i think, and Wimbledon). - Asked him to look up the medal tally at the last two Commonwealth games. India are right up there in the top 4. so where is your country, bro ? laughat2.gif so that's enough material for you to use in the future if some jack@ss decides to take the p*ss. Know your history. Be a little proud. Sure, India are a crap sporting nation but it's not like they haven't done anything on the international stage.

Re: the dreaded question. i think we had two badminton champions.. indian golfers are making some news in the world of golf as well... also shooting...silver medal...olympic.. long jump....anju bobby is world number 4-5 i guess... she has won many medals as well...' and in team sports... tell them about our glorious hockey :-)

Re: the dreaded question. We have no sporting culture at all. Our sporting achievments are embarrasing compared to size of our country. Guys I play cricket with had right laugh at olympics saying " 1 billion people, one silver medal"

Re: the dreaded question. it is embarrassing for all asian nations except the chinese and japanese/koreans to an extent.... we jus dont pay enuf attention.... when i was young, i was enrolled in gymnastics..... u guys wont believe, how much potential we have in tht area... there were some girls and guys too who were unbelievably flexible and graceful..... it comes from our yoga and classical dance in our genes.... as well as supple bones... but nobody pays any attention to it..... students participate in those classes till 10th grade, then they quit all extra-curricular activities from 10th grade to prepare for career....
