Ram Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 We've had some terrible natural disasters in the recent past. The Earthquake in Bhuj and Kashmir, the floods of Orissa, the Tsunami of South India. The combined casualties in these disasters must have crossed 100s of 1000s of people. And this really begs the question - Do we have any sort of disaster recovery and management program? Does the govt. know what to do next time nature's fury wreaks its havoc on our country? Are there any centralized humanitarian relief and reconstruction command centers? How long will it take for rescue efforts to reach the affected areas? How many can be mobilized at a time? What bout relief supplies? How do you get them across if the affected areas have been cut-off? What about heavy lifting equipment in terms of a earthquake? Which govt. agencies will be mobilized? Who is in command of the relief operations? What if the number of people affected is 1,00,000? what if its 10,00,000? Having to experience death and destruction due to natural disasters is horrible enough, but whats more unacceptable is to see helpless people perish because help didnt arrive on time.
DomainK Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Yes. I think every state has a disaster management cell. At least Maharashtra has one. Last year when the rains began their office was one of the first to get flooded and they were seeking help from outside. Media had a feast on that.

kabira Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 our disaster management cellsl are disaster itself. But thanks to NGOs, RSS, Ramkrishna Mission, Swaminarayan sect etc. we always have enough ppl giving their hand in need of an hour. Although its always bit late.
The Outsider Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Parts of North India are extremely earthquake prone and with the ever increasing population and conglomeration in cities, it is a major disaster waiting to happen.
Clarke Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 not much i'd guess .. they have helicopters and lots of emergency staff and funds for netajis and their rescue or for that matter their memorials if something happens to them. Talking of common man .. 40% below poverty rate, isnt that a 24/7/365 disaster ?
gs Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Even countries like the US (during katrina) and China (floods last year) have suffered greatly and their emergency response infrastructure was found to be inadequate. God forbid, if something massive were to happen in India, its upto the "aam janta" to step up and help each other. Dont expect any help from govt machinery, at least not in time. Instead helcopters will be used for aerial survey of affected areas by ministers.:((

THX_1138 Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 keep in mind the $45000 rule. if a natural disaster strikes any region with a mean household income in excess of the figure, commandos jump from choppers, and emerge from rat holes to provide timely assistance. also it does not hurt to be white... in all other cases, relief is delayed, and considerable suffering is to be expected.
