Lurker Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Wow! Didnt know this movie was being released. Seems like a good plot with liberal dose of idioms quite populars in the UP belt. Should be a great watch. Vishal Bhardwaj is fast becoming the Gulzar of his generation, the pathbreaker in every way. In a fascinating way this may be one of the truest legacy of Gulzar as he took a raw Vishal under his wing and honed him as his mentor.
Lurker Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Being a perennial Gulzar and Vishal Bhardwaj I had to look up the internet about the music of the movie and how it has been received. What caught my attention was not the music review itself but how almost every single reviewer mentioned looking up "Ibn-e-Batuta" and finding out who he was. I mean really guys? Are we so effed up as a nation when it comes to our history today that we do not know who Ibn-e-batuta was??? Whats next, checking out who Fa Hien was or Hieun Tsang was??? How shameful it is that we know Conan O Briens and Twilight Zone but know not about Ibn-e-batuta. Seems like in a hurry to ape United States we are fast absorbing the tendency to know little outside of what is relevant to us. But atleast americans can claim to know their history, if not of others, we on the other hand seem to be in a hurry to forget our own history. xxx

I mean really guys? Are we so Wouldnt blame them it was not mentioned in the history book in the school I was studying in dont know about . Even most of the general public wouldnt know who this guy was.

The day another album comes out with lyric skills matching that displayed in Aandhi would be the day I would retire, learn all the songs from new album and ride Patna-Gaya daily passenger with a harmonium in my gala. Saala even after 25 years of decoding/debugging people are still wondering what "pathar ki haveli ko, sheeshon ke gharondon mein, tinkon ke nasheman tak is mod se jaate hain" means...wah. Lekin(pun intentional as Lekin is also Gulzar's work) Gulzar and Vishal Bhardwaj is keeping one of our last traditions alive, that of Indian folk music. After RD Burman who was a master of folk music(just listen to all his Maanjhi songs a lost tradition of Bengal), Gulzar/VB is keeping this alive with Chapa chapa charkha chale to Beedi jalaiye de jigar se piya and now Ibn-e-Batuta. Bhai saab dont miss this golden saga. And join the bandwagon of this guru-shishya parampara(another tradition we are losing very fast). By the by VB is matching Gulzar in pure movie making skills what with Maqbool, Makdi, Blue Umbrella, Omkara, Kaminey etc. xx

Brilliantly made - right from the camera work, the dialogues, and the acting. Great to see Vishal Bhardwaj's genre being exploited by other film makers as well, though this was produced by Vishal. Had a spaghetti western kind of feel to it, set in eastern UP. Certainly not easy to pull off. Some of the dialogues of course are getting the highlight, but for me the most remarkable aspect of the movie was the camera work and angles used during the movie. The use of shadows is terrific and the number of close up shots of all actors is a testament to the great job done by all. Could have made it another 15 minutes longer by developing the relationship of Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah a bit more. But I am not complaining if Bollywood produces more movies of this quality and class.

I consider myself a history buff, haven't heard of him anywhere in mainstream media. Lurkerji, Your rants are not valid. And I had to Google, who "Fa Hien was or Hieun Tsang was?" is or are! edit: I didn't know who Fa Hien is, but I recalled who Hieun Tsang is. He was spelled - Xuanzang afaik! And BB, Gulzar never composed songs, it was usually RDB. Aandhi is RDB quintessential. Comparing film-makers Gulzar and VB is a good one. They both have great output so far. Most VB's songs have been penned by Gulzar. That way, they are a terrific team!
