vvvslaxman
I was just checking where Veeru stands as an opener in the history. Among the regular openers (Ignoring the innings where they batted in the middle order) avgewise http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?batting_positionmax1=2;batting_positionval1=batting_position;class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=batting_average;template=results;type=batting Minimum 25 innings as opener 1) Sutcliffe 54 matches 4522 runs 61.10 Avge 2) B Mitchell 27 matches 2390 runs 56.90 Avge 3) L Hutton 76 matches 6721 runs 56.47 avge 4) J Hobbs 58 matches 5130 runs 56.37 avge 5) B Simpson 38 matches 3664 runs 55.51 avge 6) V Sehwag 71 matches 6312 runs 54.88 avge 7) G Gambhir 31 matches 2798 runs 54.86 avge 8) Ponsford 20 matches 1517 runs 54.17 avge 9) D Amiss 39 matches 3276 runs 53.17 avge 10) Katich 25 matches 2243 runs 52.16 avge -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Link to comment
Online
What sets Viru apart is his SR along with his average Link to comment
vvvslaxman
Good that we have both Gauti and Veeru playing in the same era. All great teams in history had great openers. Hayden/Langer, Greenidge/Haynes Link to comment
Ram
These number based comparisons mean little, especially when you're comparing players across eras. Link to comment

Just a listing. If you go by runwise you will see a different list. But we are blessed to have 2 players who have average well over 50 while opening something not many teams can boast of. There are probably half a dozen other names who deserve a mention in any discussion related to openers (Gavaskar, Boycott, Smith, Langer etc), who dont find their names there. Link to comment

bsriharsha
I think since Gauti and Viru are still playing ,their averages might well increase :two_thumbs_up: Link to comment
Cow Corner
Far out! An opening partnership to actually challenge Sutcliffe and Hobbs....these are rare times! Link to comment

Deleted_User_1
Sunny is the best opening batsman period. No indian opener faced the quality bowlers like he did and that too without a helmet and against ball tampering. Link to comment
