Go on, I want to read them[/quote'] I have a very high regard for the profession. If it was a realistic career option in present day SA, I might have made it mine. Weapons are something I'm very comfortable with & I've been exposed to military history on almost a daily basis since I was a young child. The technological advances that are being made is amazing. The people behind it goes unnoticed too often.

So recreational target shooting is out. This is one basic difference of opinion that we'll just have to deal with. You won't change your mind & I won't try to change it for you. Suffice to say that IMO weapons does not always lead to death & destruction. Swords, for example, though deadly are also works of art.

Not to mention that spending on weapons is incredibly economically inefficient when the same money could be used on far productive things ranging from infrastructure and human development to other more productive areas of technological and scientific advancement. The Cold War is perfect proof - Russia spending more and more on a ridiculous arms race until it was facing bankruptcy, with zero diversification in trade (they basically relied on oil exports, and falling oil prices meant they were getting screwed) and only a massive armoury to show after all their spending.

The Soviets really were dumb, they had enough weapons so the US believed they closed the missile gap when they were no where near, but even then decided to continue making weapons just incase destroying the whole world a few times isnt enough, even worse was the space race though, we can fly a dog into space but cant feed our people yaaaaaaaay.

Precisely. I find that to be true for most countries. Europe, as they maybe in their shortcomings, have atleast got this right. I believe India is doing fairly decently in this aspect as well. Defence spending is approximately 2,5% of the GDP. If they could lower it to around 1,5% in the future years with increased GDP it might be even better. There is absolutely no reason to spend on WMDs. The true and fair question to ask is, whether we would ever use a WMD? I would never support the use of a WMD against anyone.

I will elaborate Defense is something that interested me, always did, research, I am not too keen upon but a defense research job seemed like an appropriate compromise. The research institution is a splinter group of the nations premier defense agency who work hand in gloves with the armed forces. The ultimate end game is for combat technology.

A large multi national engineering consultancy was recruiting graduates to which a friend of mine made it to the interview stage. The state emphasizes very heavily on defense and were spending a lot of money on upgrading their combat / weaponry. As such, most of the work was now tendered towards this area. The interview went well until this idiot blurted out "I don't want to do any defense related projects", to which he never heard from them again. Some people have ethics problems about working in the defense, I have none, I'd go as far as saying working in the defense is my ideal career choice.
