Viru and GG both have some limitations. But they counter it through their own ways.

Dhoni plays the short pitch stuff the best in the Indian line up.Yuvraj and Dinesh Karthik play them well too.So my rankings would be :- Dhoni Karthik Yuvraj Gambhir Sehwag Kohli Rohit Yusuf Raina The reason i put Raina last is because when a ball is digged in short, he thinks that the bowler is going to repeat the same the next ball as well, and so on he is on the backfoot the entire over and may give up his wicket away without any feet ovement even to a much fuller ball.So in that case i think Yusuf is a shade better than Raina, Rohit and Kohli hits top edges most of the time and due to short square boundaries in IPL, they are traveling the distance.Otherwise they will be caught on the fence in Australia.Dinesh Karthik seems to be a very good Puller and Hooker of the ball.Sehwag is not quick on his feet, he struggles to balls on his ribs.Gambhir on the other hand plays them down, keeps them nicely all along the carpet.Yuvi is a good puller of the cricket ball, he hits them really clean.So Dhoni, Karthik and Yuvraj comes in as the best pullers, and Gambhir comes just below Yuvi.

From what I have seen, I would say Karthik has a slight edge over others. Some of the others are good at handling the short stuff well in a sense that they won't get out to it, duck or having some kind of a scoring stroke for e.g. Viru's trademark shots where he guides the short ball over slips. And then some of them are extremely poor From that list, if I have to club them in no particular order: Good / Decent: Karthik, Viru, GG and Dhoni Poor: Raina, Yuvi, YP, Rohit Not Observed: Kohli

You must be kidding, Yuvi is a far better puller than the Yusufs and Rainas and Nohits, i just cant believe that Yuvi's front foot pull has been forgotten by some of us.Cant blame u all given the form he is in :cantstop:.But coming to the point, i thinbk Yuvi is a good puller, he just gets on top of the ball and swats the bat, by rolling the wrist over the ball well, and it is hit with some fierce power

playing hook shot against express pace is one of the toughest shots to execute, you have high risk of getting hurt badly if you don't judge the pace of ball properly and or getting out caught in deep unlike pull shot playing hook shot you have to meet the ball on the way up and no way you can control that shot to perfection, and on top of it you have to play that shot on back foot which is not very common today among Indian players Amarnath was one of best India who could play hook shot but it was also his downfall, he got concussed playing that shot and was out doing it many times. Playing pull shot which players like Ponting even Watson and bunch of other players do it well is not as risky as hook shot as they can roll their wrists to keep the ball down and it comes with practice on bouncier pitches which Indians don't play. but unless they control it they also can get out like Watson in latest test match. Indian players like Raina and Yusuf to get on their front foot out first and then go back and don't keep the eye on the ball. If bouncer are directed at body even best of them can get out or get hurt like Dravid who is very good puller but he didn't expect that ball to rise that much in test against Bangladesh.See second video on the You tube of Ponting getting hurt against england that is risk you take when you play pull or hook shot. Sehwag got out yesterday playing pull shot which he tried to fetch way outside off stump and ended spooning an easy catch to bowler who we can a trundler. Sehwag aggressiveness sometimes is his worst enemy but well that is how he plays.But he not as bad as Raina and Pathan who have no clue what so ever against short pitch bowling.

Temujin Khagan (thats a hard name to type:)) - it is not true that only legends such as Gavaskar, Bradman etc can play the hook with panache and authority. Anybody having watched players such as Roy Fredericks, Greenidge, Srikkanth will tell you that these are players of the highest quality when it came to hooking. But they were not really legends. In the end it is all horses for courses. The greatest players always had a greater array of strokes. They did not necessarily have to be the best in a particular stroke. For example, I have yet to see somebody square cut with the ferocity and control of a Robin Smith or an Allan Lamb. But then those two did not play too many other shots with the same authority.

let them play quality pace without trouble first, then we can talk about short deliveries. one of the commentators in the 2009 T20 cup said 'Cant play when its short and fast, can't play when its spinning, how abt medium and straight?' to me our t 20 wc campaign exposed this weakness more than any other recent tournament. it was almost embarrasing to watch raina getting bullied by sidebottom. and its not like they hid their plan. they came out and said the day before 'we will target the indians with short deliveries'. yet they couldn't do anything about it.

Dhoni, Karthik and Dravid are the best in current Indian team. I've never seen these guys having problems with short ball.

Yusuf can hit any ball to six only him and shewag can do that. many of world class players had problem with the short ball LIke shane warn said " dare to short ball yusuf if you get it wrong it will be out of park.

watson's pull shot is actually a terrible example of how to play the shot. he makes no effort to get inside the line, doesnt move his feet, and plays it with a angled bat to balls well outside off. his good eye and batspeed let him get away with this.
