Deleted_User_1 Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 It is obvious that he did not leave the international scene because he was tired of playing. He got tired of the BCCI selectors' shenanigans for sure!! I mean, this guy was in the best form he has ever been in his career from end 2006 through 2008 Aus series after which he retired. I can appreciate him not being in the ODI since players like Laxman, Dravid and Kumble were not in the mix since end 2007 as well (although he was scoring consistently), but test cricket? C'mon.... Why do these BCCI morons keep selecting players like Nohit and Pissant after repeated failures, but had a quick leash for Dada? During that period I talked about, I think the only bad series he had was during the SL tour where every Indian batsman struggled. Even Dravid has been given a lot of leeway when he was struggling (granted Dravid is a superior player, but still). And after all, have we found a replacement for Dada yet? NO. Fatraj still sucks and the new players have not found a permanent place. We saw how they all struggled against Steyn and co, when a couple veterans were missing during the 1st test. I think I know what it is....Me thinks it is that there is no Bengal lobby in the BCCI. Plus Dada never kissed anyone's ass. And please do not give me that Dada could not field....like we have champion fielders in the current side!!! The current IPL shows that the Prince of Calcutta still has it in him, but even he probably has no desire to deal with selection politics anymore.
fineleg Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 D.Roy, I believe if SG wanted to continue in Tests, selectors would have picked him. Problem is SG knew if he goes low score for few matches, maybe he'd get dropped - that would be Wrong on part of selectors if they did that (in Tests). Nevertheless they may (or may not) have done that. SG wanted to 100% ensure he left on a high, much like the other legend SG in ur thumbnail. That part Dada ha achieved - this thread is proof :hatsoff: to Prince of Calcutta Now, Dravid & Lax will also want to time their retirement on a high.

That may be true, but the fact that he was on a short leash while the others weren't is hypocritical. It was not like he was playing poorly, in fact far from it. He just got tired of this constant talk if he was going to be in the team.....
yoda Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 How long do you want these guys to play? Till they die? People do retire before they are kicked out. It does happen, although very rarely in Indian cricket. As a dada fan you should be happy he is retired instead of being kicked out for the second time, which would have happened sooner than later if his form dipped. Also, he was never in the league of a Dravid or a Laxman in tests. He was useful as a captain and a decent bat. Take his captaincy out and he is replaceable, ofc not by someone named Yuvraj :hehe:.
saneindian Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Simple reason, he was in horrible form in the last 10-12 tests of his career (before he announced he will quit and went onto have a great series vs the Aussies in Oct 2008). Series in Aus, Jan 2008 scores of 43, 40, 67, 51, 9, 0, 7, 18, Total 225 runs in 4 tests @ 28 Series vs SA Mar 2008, scores of 24, 0, 87, 87, 13*, Total 211 runs in 3 tests @52 Series vs Sri Lanka , scores of 23, 44, 0, 16, 35, 18, Total 136 runs in 3 tests @ 23 So 10 tests before announcing his retirement, he had 572 runs in 10 tests @31 with 0 100s and 4 50s. Considering Dravid was also in a very bad patch around the same time and we hadn't won any of the last 3 tests series played, a change in the team was necessary. The choice was to pick one between Dravid and Ganguly and Ganguly had to go, Dravid being a comparatively better test batsman got the nod to continue. I dont find anything wrong with that.
Vikas Bhatt Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 BCCI Politics made him retire early. After Dravid became captain, Chapell braionwashed Dravid enough to throw Ganguly out. At that point Dada probably deserved it but thing is even after he returned successfully, he was most udner scrutiny. A well built BCCI lobby through media kept on insisting that the younger generation should be phased in and Dada's name was foremost to start the phaseout. He was under a hanging sword all along where it looked easy to dump him for a single failure [unfairly - followed next by Laxman also unfairly]. Dada and Laxman have suffered the most in the last 4 years since Dravid and Chappell came in and this happened because BCCI was full of s h i t encouraging politicians like Pawar axing their grinds with Dalmiya and co.

Dada and Laxman have suffered the most in the last 4 years since Dravid and Chappell came in and this happened because BCCI was full of s h i t encouraging politicians like Pawar axing their grinds with Dalmiya and co. The same politics got him into the team, was the reason why he became the captain (ahead of Kumble), and then again made a comeback to the team. Not debating what he did after politics got him to where he reached, but just trying to point the role "politics" played in his career right from the start. And as I pointed out with the numbers of his last 10 tests before announcing retirement, he did deserve the sack. Did nothing in the Aus tour, made a match winning contribution in SA series, had a horrible SL series. At the age of 35-36, playing 10 tests at an avg of 31, it is always difficult to retain your place.
fineleg Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 saneindian, we cannot hold SL series just against SG. Except maverick Waggy, all the "greats" were at sea against Ajantha Jaundice & spin co. of Lanka. RD struggled, VVS was Ugly, and as flamy would say Even Goddy got spanky. Based on Aus+SA series, SG deserved longer rope. Yuseless in Tests was a pathetic replacement for anyone.
thevortex Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I am actually surprised that people think he retired ahead of the game. Perhaps he had more time left in the Test arena. But to me I am pained and irritated at seeing this man dive helter skelter to retrieve balls, take brilliant catches and throw down the stumps etc. etc. in this IPL. Does anybody remember that this guy was just about the worst fielder in the whole world when he played for India? Now I am no conspiracy theorist but it is readily apparent that he is willing to do a complete makeover and give his 150% in the IPL. But why is it that he was not ready to do this when he played for the country???

Probably everything is on his shoulders now.
thevortex Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 To me this is unacceptable. Why could he not summon these energy levels when he was playing for India and younger to boot? Uncomfortable questions have to be asked.
HowardRoark Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 because he sucked invariably over a reasonable long period prior to his long delayed retirement? because he cannot scale this occasional 20 over effort to 50 overs or 5 days? :wall:
rahulrulezz Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 He is the main reason Kolkata Knightriders was/is/will always be at the bottom of the table... and sadly he is THE Icon player for KK... He was/is not good enough to be in India-A team
davidcooper Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 dada was india's greatest captain and will be for a long time he gave india future stars like sehwag, bhajji, yuvi, zaheer etc. i think he had a great career and probably retired at the right time when both he and the indian team were on a high

Desi Cartman Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 dada was india's greatest captain and will be for a long time he gave india future stars like sehwag, bhajji, yuvi, zaheer etc. i think he had a great career and probably retired at the right time when both he and the indian team were on a high How did he give India Zaheer and Bhajji ? by the same logic did he also give Rohan Gavaskar , D Mongia and Mohanty :dontknow: The selectors select players and captains try as its their job to find /play the best XI. BTW MSD took over captaincy and IMO MSD didnt want SG in the side.
nballa Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 once again, i repeat - stop measuring a players abilities based on what they do in ipl. anybody and everybody scores runs in this slog fest. heck give me a bat and i'd indulge in some wild swings like harbhajan and get a 10 ball 50.
