Police in India say a controversial Hindu holy man facing charges of obscenity has been arrested. Nithyananda Swami was detained in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh where police said he had been hiding. The guru stepped down last month as head of a religious organisation based in the southern city of Bangalore. His announcement came after a video apparently showing him engaging in sexual acts with two women. He says he is innocent and the video is a fake. Nithyananda Swami has a huge following in southern India and his mission has branches in several countries, including the US and Europe. 'Spiritual seclusion' "Nithyananda Swami was arrested at Solan [in Himachal Pradesh] along with his associate Gopal Seelam Reddy and they would be brought to Bangalore soon," the city's director general of police, DV Guruprasaad, said. On Tuesday, the authorities raided the swami's sprawling centre near Bangalore. Nithyananda Swami, 32, stepped down as leader of the global Dhyanapeetam (Knowledge Centre) organisation soon after the police inquiry was launched. "I have decided to live a life of spiritual seclusion for some indefinite time," the guru said in a statement. "If required, I will return and talk about all that had happened as an independent witness to my conduct with a clean heart and pure soul and in a less prejudiced atmosphere." The video shocked his devotees and angered locals - his ashram near Bangalore was vandalised after TV channels broadcast the video. The guru's followers allege the video was created and distributed by a jealous inmate of the ashram in a bid to defame him. Arrested? But on what charges? An adult having sex with another consenting adult of the opposite sex is a crime in India?:dontknow:
indian police regularly arrest the victims of sex scandals... their logic - if not for the victim, the videotape wouldnt have been made in the first place. @ulcite - sorry dude, you wont get the fanatic response you expected...

But they need some charge to put them under arrest. A magistrate would look for some basis before signing an arrest warrant. What does the warrant say? Arrested for having sex? Arrested for some idiot planted a camera in their room and made a video? What the F are the going to prosecute him for? What sections will be applied? What section allows for an arrest to be made? An arrest is not done until the police is relatively sure that the person has committed a crime or has broken some law. What law is broken here? This makes basis for pure harassment on the part of the police and any lawyer worth his salt should be able to get some handsome compensation for harassment, defamation, mental trauma, abuse of power, criminal negligence, professional damage (poor baba's business has taken a hit because of this) and corruption. Even charges of criminal conspiracy can be brought and won if the lawyer is good.

Often, laws are simply statements and can be interpreted by different people differently. Which is where the court comes in, to interpret the law and apply it to the case being discussed.

I dont find any reason why he would be arrested and under what laws .. two consenting adults can have sex and that should not be a problem The only reason for arresting might be if he is charged with cheating people in the name of religion .. he can be charged under cheating and fraud in that case otherwise I dont see any reason for arrest to be frank

Self-styled godman Swami Nityananda, who is under arrest for obscenity and other charges, made his followers sign contracts to learn and practice tantrik sex secrets and prohibited them for revealing this. CNN-IBN has accessed copies of a non-disclosure agreement that his followers were made to sign, prohibiting them from divulging details about the “sex contract”. The document was seized by the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while searching the at his ashram (learning centre) in Bidadi, Karnataka. The contract says that “volunteers” would use “sexual energy for increased intimacy/spiritual connection, pleasure, harmony and freedom”. The document says “activities” during the programme would include nudity and erotica. "Volunteer understands that the program may involve the learning and practise of ancient tantric secrets associated with male and female ecstasy including use of sexual energy for increased intimacy/spiritual connection, pleasure, harmony and freedom. Volunteer understands that these activities could be physically and mentally challenging and may involve nudity, assess to visual images, graphic visual depictions and descriptions of nudity and sexual activity, close physical proximity and intimacy, verbal and written descriptions and audio sounds of a sexually oriented and erotic nature, etc. Nityananda then prohibited the volunteers from revealing the programme or naming him for it. “By reading and signing this addendum, volunteer irrevocably acknowledges that he/she is voluntarily giving his unconditional acceptance of such activities and discharges the Leader and Foundation and anyone else not specifically mentioned here but directly or indirectly involved in the organization, management or conduct of any such programs from any liability, direct or indirect, arising from such activities." Nityananda and four of his aides were arrested in a Himachal Pradesh village on Wednesday and flown to Bangalore the next day. He is charged with obscenity, criminal intimidation, rape and hurting religious sentiments in Karnataka.

I was busy with several works and out of home most of the day and so did not watch news channels .. I watched this news a few hours ago and thought of posting it but was late today :P BTW it is an agreement which means he and his followers agree to have sex .. that is wrong but I dont think illegal .. the only illegal thing I find is that he in a way cheated the millions of other followers who did sign the contract as they followed him as a spiritual and religious leader and not a sex guru
