IPL teams should be able to retain eight players - Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar, the Mumbai Indians captain, has said the IPL franchises should be allowed to hold on to a certain number of players from their existing squads as the league prepares for a reshuffle at the end of the 2010 season, when existing player contracts expire. Next year the IPL will have two new franchises - Pune and Kochi - and a fresh auction but Tendulkar wanted teams to be able to retain at least eight players. "About retaining players, my personal thoughts are that we should be allowed to retain four India players and four foreign players," Tendulkar told the Indian news channel Times Now. "As for domestic players, it should be up to the franchisees. I feel it's a tough call because all teams have made huge efforts in building a good side. "It's not an overnight result. For three years everyone has been working on what's the best combination. Even a player's identity is important. We have to look into these things and then have some changes. I hope there are not too many changes." For a player who opted not to represent India in Twenty20 internationals in 2007, Tendulkar has appeared to have mastered the art of batting in the shortest format, as his statisticsthis IPL indicate. His batting has been a sensation this season but his captaincy has also drawn plaudits. Tendulkar captained India twice unsuccessfully, but he said he did not have a point to prove to critics as Mumbai prepared to contest their first IPL final. "It's a big stage but it's not about proving a point to someone that I can manage captaincy. I have never played for that," he said. "The runs I have scored in all forms of the game, I was not trying to prove something to someone. I have just played because I enjoyed playing and loved playing and the passion for cricket is there. I have just done that and while doing that all this has happened." http://www.cricinfo.com/ipl2010/content/current/story/457016.html It seems like he's gonna stay with MI:yay:

Even if he goes into the auction pool......nita ambani will keep bidding until she gets him. :giggle: money is no boundary for a guy like sachin.
Absolutely. Especially with the raised auction cap. I won't be surprised to see Sachin becoming the costliest player in the IPL history next season. Apart from Mumbai, Team Pune and Kochi seems to have 'big plans' for Sachin!

Yeah Sachin. Sure. Why not scrap the darn auction already coz Bambi won't leave any star player for the auctions :hehe:
Please give me ONE logical reason in draining out the pool of players that you already have because IPL wants the other 2 franchises to have a respectable squad. Franchises (existing ones) took lot of time and spent a good amount of $ in collecting players that are tactically fit for them but suddenly they're asked to choose 2-5 between the group of 16-20. Saurabh tiwary for example, has been retained in MI squad for three years and they've let him grow as a player and become one of the essentials in the middle order but they might have to let him go in a bid to retaining the other star performers. Quite ridiculous.

There should be no limit except the overall salary cap. If any current team and it's player wants to negotiate and come to terms they should be allowed to. Also, this whole auction business seems shady forcing teams to out-bid others and end up paying way too much money for just a few players which ends up with teams paying paltry sums to local players. I would just do away with the auction. Let the new franchises work with the available pool of players and sign whoever they want with whatever cap they have.

@ bibi... So why have 7 teams apart from MI? Why don't we give all teams to Mukesh? There is something called as "Level-playing field". IPL has diverse franchises - rich teams like MI and paupers like RR. Just because MI has more money than all teams combined isn't even a logical reason to let them have the best players in the world. Which is why, the IPL GC has thought about a "4+2" scheme, so that everyone has something to gain or lose. Its really stupid to have one rich team buying all the best players and win the title. Thats not the USP of the IPL. The USP is - "Unpredictability by means of maintaining a level-playing field where any team can beat any team and have a chance to pick the best players in the world, making sure the richest teams can't really keep the best players". If IPL does what Sachin is suggesting, what will be the difference between the IPL & EPL? Who the heck wants to see a situation where ONLY MI are frontrunners and like Man U and Chelsea, dominate every season? That would be a big bore. No one except for Mumbai will watch the IPL then. Your idea is right that teams invested money, but isn't change the only thing constant in the world? Take it up as a challenge. You never know what will come of it.

Please tell me when did SRT request that rules be different for MI only ? He was speaking on behalf of other franchises too.

Bull crap, This is capitalism, not socialism at work. If they don't have money, they shouldn't have signed up for this. I don't mind salary caps, but that's the maximum IPL should be able to interfere and no more. And great money doesn't guarantee great results. We have RR in the first season, Brc totally screwed despite having a million dollar player, etc etc. Even in European football, ManU, Barcelona etc have almost constantly outperformed cash rich teams like Real Madrid or Chelsea. I totally agree with Sachin. Mi have finally arrived at their best combination after two disastrous seasons and it will be disappointing to see it all go the next year. Further the brand value of teams have been created around these players. I would love to see MI retain Tiwary, Rayudu, Khan, Bhajji and Pollard, Malinga, Duminy and Bravo. If Sachin himself has to be in the retention pool, would replace Rayudu.
