Well on that note I think IPl should allow fielding of 5 foreigners in a team provided the fifth is from an associate nation it would give key players good exposure. Surely there are decent batsmen and bowlers who could cut it above a few of our domestic guys in these associates.

Now why would you want to do that? Do you know what will happen if they bring this rule in IPL 4? Bangladesh will give away their test staus and become an associate nation. :hysterical: I want to see the tigers roaring. :hehe:

Afghanistan and cricket always evoke feelings of poignancy and turn my mood strangely philosophical and melancholy at the same time. At CW we once had a young cricket enthusiast from Afghanistan who was in his early teens. His English was faulty and in the slightly elitist environs of CW we made fun of it as though our knowledge of Pashto was any better. His knowledge of the game's past history was sketchy at best and combined with his language which made him employ an amusing turn of phrase at times, made us tolerate him and humour him at best and to deride him sarcastically at our worst. But one thing in which he completely overshadowed all of us was his unbridled enthusiasm for the game. He realised we were making fun of his language and did say so with completely unaffected child like innocence asking why we made fun of his language. Many of us were mercilessly cruel. Over time he became a permanent member of the cricket loving community at CW and we had even our own nick name for him - Bob. No one called him by his real name Fardin Qayumi. He had joined CW in October 2004 and started his short innings there with a post (a new thread in fact) that, looking at it today, moistens my eyes. Here it is . . .

We had just moved from mocking him, to condescendingly tolerating him, to starting to accept him as one of our own that the news came that he had been killed in a road accident. He was sixteen. His account at CW shows his last activity as on 9th December 2005 - just thirteen and a half month after he had made that initial thread. He was very proud of his Afghan roots and fiercely defended the country and its cricket of which, I am ashamed to say, I had no idea till he mentioned it. One day. a couple of months after he had joined, he wrote in an India/Bangladesh series thread . . .

By July 2005 he had become a very confident member of the community and had started addressing other members by their first names. Bob came back with a spirited reply which also indicated his reason for starting the thread in the first place . . . Dont you think that we have some young talented cricketers below 16 years of age and not old enough to play first class cricket playing club cricket at the moment We were still too dumb to see what he was hinting at. But one of the senior members replied that he would "ike to think I'd make the team" Bob was really chuffed with this affirmation of his concept. I can imaging him punching enthusiastically into his keyboard as he posted . . .

Today, as Afghanistan prepare to take on India I would like to pray that, if it is going to make Fardin Qayumi, aka Cricket Player, aka CP, aka (most fondly) Bob happy, from where-ever he is watching this game, that his beloved Afghanistan beat India. I would also like to believe that Bob, who would have been about 21 today, might as well have been bowling to Dhoni and hitting Harbhajan out of the park had he not left the game a trifle early. So you want BCCI to do ICC's job? Soeaking of good will, We toured pak back in 2004, look at where we 2 are now? Or that we helped to get BD into tests and now it just diluted the whole test status. Rather these guys work their way up rather than being handed out IPL contracts just because their country is not good at cricket.

On 4th of December 2005 he put this picture of his on CW's thread called What do you look like? Pt II ( he had done it before) and he wrote in that post . . .

Bob never replied to these. In fact he never posted again on the forum. That picture and the question he seemed to be asking himself was the last we heard of him till we got the terrible news much later. Five days after posting that picture of his, Bob left for ever. That last comment on his, unintentional, post turned out to be sickeningly macabre . . .
