A chess amateur myself, just can't help but drool over this guy's brilliant brilliant preparation. Calculated sacrifices with the white and smart a.s.s opening moves with the black in defence. Arguably India's greatest ever sportsman but least heralded. The lone Indian competing and triumphing against the guys who grew up in the ultra ultra Soviet schools of chess. :hatsoff: anand-topalov.com/

:haha:The moment I saw the thread title and saw that Patriot created it, I knew something like this will appear -

Arguably India's greatest ever sportsman but least heralded.
On the topic, we all love Vishy. The honor he has brought for our country is enormous. And yes, I consider him India's greatest sportsman. If any sportsman deserves the 'Bharat Ratna', it's him. The difference is that my opinion doesn't have any hint of bitterness intended to rile up other people on ICF.

So what are you implying? That others here are not as sincere as you are in their praise?

I'm not speaking of others. I'm pin pointing Patriot in particular. And I don't doubt that he's sincere. But that highlighted part of his post in my last post is what I was speaking of. There's a hint of bitterness in it, and it's meant to mean something which most of us know.

Are computer programming competetions played by miliions and millions of people of all age groups ? Chess is. As are other sports. Chess is a cerebral sport. The organized competition, the fact that the game is NOT entirely dependant upon skill, the fact that people have been known to lose 2-5 pounds after a particularly intense chess match, the fact that people who are younger and are in better shape have a physical advantage over the old and feeble because they can withstand the hours of sitting completely still in a chair for up to 5 hours while concentrating intensely.

Chess is a recognized sport by the International Olympic Committee. What is curling then...that's also a sport.

I really wish that if Sachin is to be given the Bharat Ratna someday, first it should be Vishy in the line. I don't think anyone will make a hue or cry if Vishy is bestowed upon that honor. If Sachin is first in the line of sportsmen, there's guaranteed to be a 'hungama'. "Oh what has he done for the poor, what has he done for the country's perspective, man he had this tax controversy over his ferrari ......." The news channels will be busy 24/7 making a big issue out of it for the own profit. And when the topic drys out, they'll move on to find another one. Vishy Bhai, Zindabad!

A little premature to say he is about 'about to win (retain) his world title'. Only 6 games have been played out of 12 and Anand currently holds a 1 point lead.
yup a very slender lead and half the game still to be played
