SJS50 Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Okay this a personal opinion and I know I am new to this site so this may not be everyone's opinion. . . I don't know. Its great to have an Indian Cricket Fan's site but surely it is open to all cricket fans? If not we should make it clear. If yes, as I am sure is the case, we need to tone down the rhetoric a bit (more than a bit at times). Yes Pakistan lost and lost badly but I am afraid I do not see anything to celebrate (or moan) about. We need to show a bit more maturity in this matter. Sorry for sounding a bit like a teacher but thats not my intention trust me. We need to be proud of our forum as much as we are proud of our teams and our countries. I cant see how we can be proud of our forum if we use it to display crassly parochial sentiments. I know that there are other sites with similar atmosphere but what we need to learn from them is "How not to conduct ourselves". Surely we would like everyone, Indians, Pakistanis, Australians , everyone to say this is a site that is worth being a member of and that every cricket lover can be proud to belong to irrespective of which team/country they support. The only case in which this would not be true is if we are to declare that this is a site only for those who love, cherish and support India, Indian cricket and Indian cricketers and will denounce all, real or imagined, opponents of the same. I am sure that is not the case and that is not what this site is all about. If, God forbid, it is, I am sorry I did not realise it so far and came to the wrong place.

Its possible that the person who started the thread meant it as light hearted banter but how do you ensure that everyone who comes and reads it takes it in the same spirit. Why should you not expect the really fanatically zealous "India-supporters" (and there are those I am talking of) not join in and post stuff not meant in that same spirit? Similarly, what stops a Pakistani supporter from reading any thing except Pak-bashing by Indian fans in this. The problem with light-hearted stuff on sensitive subjects is that it ends up in what happened to the diplomat who was just smoking a cigarette in the airliner's toilet but when confronted by the staff made a "light-hearted comment" about a bomb. There are things one needs to be careful about. The least that should have been done in this case is to add a "post Script" at the end of the post specifically stating that it is just in jest and not meant to offend Pak supporters. Just that much would have been enough.

Are their standards of propriety the highest we can aspire to?

You must understand what I am trying to say. This is not about India and not about Pakistan. It is about this site and what it stands for. It is that we need to be clear about, all of us, those who own it, those who have been members for long and those who are new or may be yet to join. Personal issues, personal egos, personal experiences at this site or elsewhere are small compared to that important question. What is ICF all about? We need to ask ourselves that. Everything else is just taking defensive postures for what we may have intentionally, by accident, in a knee jerk reaction to something, have done.
SJS50 Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 By the way, my parents came as refugees from what is now Pakistan. I was born soon after so I have grown up with horrid tales of my parents experience. I have lived through three wars our countries went to. I have been a frenzied fan of cricket (as a young man like you people) at a time when a cricket match between our two nations was all that a war without bloodshed could be. So I am aware of the emotive aspects of this much more than the younger ones amongst you can even dare to imagine. That, all the baggage of the past and the conditioning of sixty years, does not change how I see things today.

Well said indeed, thankfully the pak-bashing has reduced in recent weeks- perhaps only because Pakistan have not been playing much. It gets tiresome and banal. ESPECIALLY when we celebrate their losses vs other teams, i.e not India. I dont like Pakistan much either, but these things go in swings and roundabouts. For much of the 90's we were not very good at all, whilst Pakistan with their pace attack won test series home and away regularly- very annoying for an India fan who had lots of Pak mates Lest we forget the last time we played them in an ODI, we lost in the CT. And as I said earlier, theyre a force in T20 cricket. Its a matter of time before they get back to grips with tests, once their catching is sorted, and the middle order learns how to hang in there in YK and MYs absence. The Pak bowling is still world class. Give me Gul and Asif over Nehra and Praveen anyday.
