This is one of the main reasons team 'starts late' in every series and compititions..In any series, you do get time to catch up but in compititions by the time you start 'learning from mistakes' it's too late and get kicked out with even some humiliations of losing to lesser teams.. Then it's the usual Dhoni and BCCI 'blah blah' about the team is 'still the no. 1 test team' and 'players are rusty', 'bowlers/batsmen were not upto the mark', 'you shouldn't expect us to win every match and tournaments'..etc. And if the things get too hot then you can shoot back, "this is the same team which is No. 1 in Test rankings..is that how you treat your players?" And in the forum there will be members to remind us that this is the same team which is ranked this-that in Test/ODI, fans are fickle minded etc.. I mean WTF? Dude do you expect them to say "Oh we lost this series, strip us of our no 1 test rank"?

Even is they lose T20s or ODIs, they bring up Test ranking. For example: What has being a Test No. 1 and ODI No. 2 got to do with Indian teams justification in successive failures n various ICC and Non-ICC ODI/T20 tournaments? The fans are not always thinking of these rankings all the time because for a team like India, ranking comes and goes just like that. And they are rightly hoping the player to not keep on basking on that ranking glory and continue to get kicked out of all the multi-team tournaments after tournaments.. But it seem players themselves are basking in that "ranking glory" and taking all the other events lightly. It seems the ranking has gone to their heads.. We knew that the fans would be disappointed but some criticism was exaggerated. How can a team that is No. 1 in Tests and No. 2 in ODIs be admonished like this? First was a tri series in BD where toss played the biggest part, Dhoni or BCCI never said "We lost but we are no 1 in tests". Next was the t20 WC. Dhoni never said we are number 1 in tests, who cares if we lost. He said we played badly we lost. And then we lost in this tri series. I didn't hear Raina say " We are no 1 in tests and the loss doesn't matter".

What are the players, captain, team management, coach and BCCI doing?

But with a bit discipline come game time, match practice can go out the window. India with or without match practice hasnt ever done good in opening games whether tests or odis.
