Dinda aims to make it count A STAFF REPORTER Calcutta: It’s not often that an Indian pace attack for a tri-series consists of a quartet that has no experience of playing one day Internationals. It becomes stranger still when one discovers that two of them have had experience of playing in only one Twenty20 International. But that hardly bothers Bengal speedster Ashok Dinda. “When you play for India, you have to put your hand up and be counted and respond to pressure situations. I know that apart from me and R. Vinay Kumar (who made his debut in the World T20), none of the other pacers have played international cricket. “Even we are new to international cricket but that hardly matters. I have performed well in the Indian Premier League. Now I have to repeat the same kind of consistency at the international level,” Dinda told The Telegraph on the eve of the national team’s departure for Zimbabwe. The absolute rookies are Vidarbha pacer Umesh Yadav and Rajasthan’s Pankaj Singh. So, what exactly will be his aim in the tri-series? “First and foremost will be to stick to a disciplined line and length. It’s the percentage of good balls I bowl that matters. One can even end up getting wickets bowling a long hop or a full toss. But my aim is to bowl in the right areas,” Dinda said. For Dinda, temperament is what makes a difference at the highest level. “My personal coach Atal Dev Varman advised me against getting intimidated by the big names. At this level it is the ability to soak in the pressure which is the key to success.” Known for his big hitting lower down the order, Dinda has also been working on his batting. “I have always taken my batting seriously. Whenever I have batted with a top-order batsman, I have tried to rotate the strike rather than going for aerial shots. “It won’t be any different in Zimbabwe although I hope the team do not require me to bat,” he laughed. Having played under Suresh Raina’s leadership is also an added advantage. “It was under Raina’s captaincy that I got five wickets in an innings against New Zealand A in a first-class match in Chennai. “He is a very helpful lad. I hope I won’t let my captain and coach (Gary Kirsten) down,” Dinda signed off.

He is a very honest trier and a hard working cricketer. Hope he does well on the tour and uses some of the tricks that he has learnt from Wasim Akram at KKR. All the best Dinda. Crank it up and pick truckloads of wickets.

Dinda has got some subtle variations especially suited for the kind of tracks we will see in Zimbabwe, so i will not be surprised if he turns out to be the leading wicket taker for India in this series

Ive never actually seen him bowl, I know his a nippier, skiddier kind than our usual trundlers- or so I hear . Hope he does well. Cant say Im entirely for his being there, it being based almost entirely on the IPL..

he gives a 100% but i don't see him lasting long. he jumps too high and lands so hard a sure recipe to screw your knees !

I have also been expecting Dinda to have some sort of ankle/knee injury but that has not happened till now - thankfully. I guess his slight build helps him in this regard. I wonder if can be even more effective with a slightly less extravagant jump. I hope India's bowling coach can work with him and help him separate between style and substance. Without doubt he is a good prospect. Perhaps the only bowler we have who loves bowling short. That to me, is a definite asset.

First top order wicket for Dinda!! Unfortunately I stopped watching the match after Raina got out. Anyway here it is: 5.2 Dinda to Dilshan, OUT, Dilshan gets too excited, and looks to clear mid-on. The ball was there in his striking reach, but took the inside half of his bat and Yusuf Pathan at mid-on took a nice overhead catch Well done!

BUMP Match figures of 12/142 vs Haryana in a Ranji match, the best by a pacer this season. Another pacer taking wickets now. He had the poace when he played for India but lacked control. If he still has that pace but has worked on his control, could be one of the options as we strive to develop a pool of pacers.

He is so good to watch and very committed bowler. Should have been given more chances. He consistently bowls over 135 kmph.If i remember correctly, ponting has some great things to say about him. Hopefully, he is still in contention for the third bowler spot.

BUMP Picking truckloads of wickets in the domestic cricket. Has now picked 54 wickets@20 in 8 matches, with 5 5-ers, best of 8/123 and best match tally of 12/142. The best way to answer the selectors who had not picked him even for the Challenger Trophy. Hopefully will get picked now.
