Desi Cartman Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 MUMBAI: Two Indian Air Force (IAF) engineers were on Wednesday arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor in Nashik, CBI officials said. Rajendra Kakkar and Shashikant Patil, posted at Ojhar near Nashik, were caught while taking the bribe amount from the contractor in a hotel, an official of the CBI's anti-corruption bureau said tonight. The contractor had completed his job related to some project with the Air Force and was awaiting the payment of his bills, the official said. The duo, however, demanded Rs 70,000 to clear his bills. The contractor agreed to pay the amount and in the meantime lodged a complain with the CBI. Accordingly a trap was laid in the Nashik hotel and the engineers were caught this evening while accepting Rs 50,000 as the first instalment, he added. Link

Clarke Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Lets learn from this: these are engineers from the Indian Air Force and if they approve technical expenses, they must surely be middle/senior level. Further, if they want a bribe of Rs. 50-70k, their salary seems to be not that gr8. I know the public sector offers a few decent benefits like free healthcare and some pension but salary levels for these critical sectors are low. There will be corruption all the time but a good pay and enforcement of anti-corruption procedures could make things better.
gs Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 ^^^Agree with you Clarke. But how much money is "enough"? No matter, how much they are paid, they'd probably still accept a bribe. In my opinion its more of a character trait/flaw than a genuine need for money for survival.

Those corrupt in their DNA will not change no matter what. Checks and balances can only do so much in any system.

Politicians are rich but they cant stop + there are many Commissioners who get paid reasonably and they cant stop + Modi wasnt poor when he started doing dirty work during IPL . Its a way of life and certain things are acceptable in the society. If these people find these jobs to be under-paying then they should look for something better in the pvt sector & take up another job. I am sure there is some poor Bcom/BSc waiting to get a job like the one they think is not good enough. I have not met many people who are happy with the amount of money they make and would not like an extra something on the side ( tax free) but most people have morals. Its just that ghooskhori is acceptable in the society and people think if everybody is doing it then when not I. Can anybody find corruption acceptable in public hospitals just because Govt hospital staff isnt paid well ?

There surely are a number of politicians in India that are in the game to make millions overnight or maybe just to feel the power that comes with the job. I do not think an engineering grad in his early 20s joins the armed forces with the intention of getting rich or making loads of black money. With the growth of the economy, loads of engineers, officers and senior personnel have left the armed forces and joined the private sector. Still, that does not mean we continue with the meager salaries of skilled personnel, especially in critical sectors. Tell me this; how many well paid private sector engineers indulge into these sort of activities as compared to the public sector ones ? Corruption exists to a certain extent, but u surely will not find for instance HR employees accepting a few thousand rupees to get u a job in Infy or Reliance, at least nowhere as much as some govt office. I never said corruption is acceptable; my stand remains that a decent salary goes some way in reducing corruption.

But the lower salary comes with a lot of benefits like long-term employment, pension, healthcare benefits etc that private sector employees doesnt get. When choosing a career, obviously they would have known these. So stating low salary is not good enough.

They are free to leave armed forces and find jobs in pvt sector, thats what a lot of people do in developed countries. I find it a lame excuse that there is corruption cuz the salaries are lower. Imagine a constable making Rs 8-10k a month and if his salary is doubled to 20k , you think he is gonna stop taking bribe. I dont think so. I think if he believes he is not making enough money then he should find another job. There are 1000s of people waiting to become constables and take 10k a month. PS: i understand that govt employees are grossly underpaid but that doesnt justify anything
