After 133 years of simple series between countries and, more recently, a rankings system providing only a little more context, the ICC has decided to introduce a formal league structure. The top four will contest play-offs every four years. England have been awarded the increasingly peripheral Champions Trophy for 2013, but are thought to be happy to exchange that for the new event. Realistically, the decision taken in Cape Town yesterday will mark the end of the Trophy. Poor crowds for the neutral games between Pakistan and Australia in England this summer did not dissuade chief executives of the Test-playing countries from supporting the initiative, which follows many years of delicate negotiations. The full ICC board is due to ratify the proposal and will also be asked to approve a one-day international league pencilled in to run for the first time from next April until April 2014. It will be separate from the World Cup with the aim of preserving interest in the longer one-day format against the rise of Twenty20. Officials want the big events to be short and snappy, hence the recommendation to reduce the number of countries competing in the World Cup from 14 to 10 from 2015. In contrast, the 2011 tournament in the sub-continent beginning in February takes 30 days merely to reduce the number of competitors to eight. Source - Article in The Times.
yoda Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Test Championship between top 4 countries. Any idea what the format is supposed to be? Round robin? 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 series? If it is a series, ideally, it should be played in the respective countries with the higher seed hosting and finals to be held at the higher seed's home. This would allow fans of those countries to see their teams in action instead of random English fans getting to watch all the action.

More importantly, it will hopefully not be anything like some Ranji matches where the team with the higher score gets additional points in case of a draw. How do u guarantee results in test cricket ? Pitches that match the wimbledon courts along with high tech weather forecasting ?

I heard the top 4 teams will be INVITED. not necessarily the top 4 ranked teams ? Is that true? This coud mean Australia and India will always have a free pass !, But the biggest beneficary of this could be England.

Well as it says in the quoted article - There seems to be no free pass to the host country if they don't qualify. This all seems to be money making technique .. and even if this is carried out england should not host it .. Some neutral country who is not part of those top 4 should host it ..

If they have a home/away series, the cricket boards may not be willing to part with their TV revenue money, which is basically what the ICC wants the test championship for. So they come up with an idiotic, 1 test playoff tournament which the ICC will host and take all the money from, that will in no way be a reflection of the teams strength. Hypocritical idiots.
