Apparently. The writing was on the wall. But he was a great all rounder imo, unluckiest bowler that I have seen. "Flintoff to announce retirement Andrew Flintoff will announce his retirement from all cricket later on Thursday after giving in to his long-standing knee injuries. Flintoff underwent surgery straight after last year's Ashes victory and hoped to return to action this season, but that was ruled out last month and he then aimed for Twenty20 stints in Australia and the IPL. Great bowler in his pomp. Probably the the fiercest in the world. There was also a remarkable change in his personality under Hussain and Vaughn. Hussain probably was more meaner and ruthless captain and wanted his bowlers to show aggression and sledge, while under Vaughn who was a more relaxed but equally ruthless captain he bowled his best with a smile. He will forever be remembered for Flintoff's ashes.

Yeah.. I thought so too. If I remember correctly he was saying that he is going to be a freelance cricketer and wants to cash in before his retirement... But yeah... good bowler and he will be missed.

He previously announced that he had retired from test cricket. Was hoping to play ODIs & T20 for Eng but realised he had very little chance of getting back in so hence he accepted his fate formally today.

With the type of injuries he was getting and the amount of treatment he had to have, wise move. He'd probably be breaking down after one or two T20s. Very good player, though England have really moved on from him in the one-day arena. Will be more missed for his bowling spells in Tests.

Highly overrated cricketer. Averages in 30s despite playing most of his career on green english pitches. He is in the category of Zaheer & Anderson who also averages in mid 30s. Great fast bowlers averages in 20s like Steyn,Asif & Aamir.

:hello: Moron! How on earth can you compare Zak with Andersson, he plays most of his games on Plat patas of Subcontinent, where as Andersson plays most of his cricket in bowler friendly conditions. Talking about Comparision of Asif with Stein, Asif is a as good as Praveen Kumar on the Flat patas of Sub Continent. Even PK will get bulks of wickets playing in England. Offcourse Amir is one of the Best.

massively overrated player. Had a few good spells and very few good innings in a career. The stats don't lie he was never a world class all-rounder
He was for a 3-4 year period when he averaged in the 40s with the bat and mid 20s with the ball.

Freddie was a very good competitor, he bowled some seriously world class spells in Ashes.I remember his spell in Lords in 09 Ashes series, he was unplayable, clicking 90+ mph and also bowling continuously in the channel outside off stump, always testing with the short stuff and bowling in swinging yorkers at will. But his career was also studded with some injuries, controversies and attitude issues.He was once a very good all rounder and had overtaken Kallis in the rankings due to his consistent Batting and Bowling performance, but on the whole, his career was disappointing and England have lost a great a/r in him.

Yes and I scored three consecutive centuries in the under-12 A's. Doesn't make me Sachin Tendulkar does it?
Hmm...why so antagonistic? You said that he was never a world class all rounder, and I merely pointed out that for a 3-4 year period he was. I never compared him with Sobers, Imran, Kapil, Botham, Kallis or the likes.

That was antagonistic? Why so thin skinned? I was merely sustaining my position that just as one swallow does not a summer make nor does a few good games make someone a truly quality player. I always thought that rather than lauding Flintoff as a burst player who could turn a game on occasions questions should have been asked why he wasn't more consistent and play to his potential more of the time. Party boy who didn't work hard enough for mine.

You cant use stats to decide how good a player is all the time, Look at Carl Hooper, was brilliant but averaged in the 30's.
