ROUND V, DAY 4 Delhi vs Assam Suyal takes 10 wickets in Delhi's outright win NEW DELHI: Pawan Suyal got his maiden 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket as Delhi registered their first outright win of the season beating Assam by seven wickets in a fifth round Ranji Trophy Super League (Group A) match at the Roshanara ground on Saturday. Delhi now have 13 points from five matches and are in second place after Mumbai, who have already qualified for the quarterfinals with 20 points. After being bundled out for 239 runs in the first innings, Assam could only manage 291 in their second essay due to some fine seam bowling by Suyal (6/71 and match haul of 10/161) and Sumit Narwal (3/79). Barring veteran Dheeraj Jadhav, who scored 122 (251 balls, 15x4) and diminutive Gokul Sharma (59, 77 balls, 10x4), none of the other batsmen could show stomach for fight, which could have got Assam a point after Dheeraj and Gokul added 129 runs for the fourth wicket. Needing 59 runs to win, Delhi achieved the target after losing three wickets in the process, thus missing a chance to get bonus points. However, credit should go to Suyal for his workhorse like effort as he used the second new ball quite effectively, which resulted in Assam losing seven wickets with an addition of only 22 runs. From 269 for three, the Amol Muzumdar-led side were all-out for 291. It was Dheeraj who was first to go today as he flashed at an away going delivery from Suyal and was gobbled up by Unmukt Chand in the gully. Buoyed by Suyal's bowling, Narwal got into the act from the opposite end and he got Gokul to edge onto Shikhar Dhawan in the slips. Narwal then got Rajdeep Das to mistime a pull-shot straight down Suyal's throat at deep fine leg. Suyal in the meantime got his five-for as he dismissed Parvez Aziz and Abu Nechim Ahmed. Delhi should blame themselves for not managing a bonus point as Shikhar Dhawan went for an impossible cut-shot to get bowled, Aditya Jain and Puneet Bisht were adjudged leg before. However Unmukt (38 not out) and Yogesh Nagar (7 not out) took the team home. Karnataka vs Himachal Pradesh Karnataka beat Himachal by 67 runs DHARMASALA: Abhimanyu Mithun (5/82) and Sreenath Arvind (3/43) rose to the occasion as Karnataka defeated Himachal Pradesh by 67 runs in their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match on Saturday. With two set batsmen at the crease in Manvinder Bisla and captain Paras Dogra and just needing 133 more runs, Himchal came into the fourth and final day's play eyeing an upset win over Karntaka. But it was not to be as the home team lost its last five batsmen adding just 65 runs to their overnight score of 153 to return empty handed from the match. Chasing 286 runs for an outright win, Himachal were bowled out for 218 in their second innings in 61.3 overs. Resuming at 153 for five, Bisla (58) and Dogra could add just six runs to their 101-run overnight stand with Arvind finally breaking the dangerous-looking partnership. Bisla added just four runs to his overnight score before he was lbw by Arvind. Dogra (55) and Rishi Dhawan (20) tried hard to force a comeback, adding 40-runs for the seventh wicket but just when it seemed Himachal could sneak out a win the duo fell within a span of 13 runs. Dhawan was the first to depart, caught by KB Pawan of Arvind and then Dogra followed suit, caught by Amit Verma off Mithun but not before completing his half century. From there on victory was just a formality for Karnataka and the visitors eventually bowled out Himachal for 218, 67 runs short of what could have been an amazing win for the hosts. Ranji Trophy Plate League, 4th round, 4th day Services beat Vidarbha in cliffhanger Group B Three runs to win off two balls, with one wicket remaining. That's what the equation had come down to for Vidarbha in their match against Services at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Seamer Amrinder Singh struck the crucial blow for Services, getting wicketkeeper Amol Ubarhande stumped off the penultimate ball of the last day, to give them a two-run victory. It was a cruel end for Vidarbha after what had been a spirited fight on the fourth day, not least from the last man out Ubarhande. He had come in with Vidarbha in trouble at 238 for 6 in their chase of 353, and made 39 off 45 balls to get them to within striking distance of an unlikely win. Vidarbha started the day needing 349 more runs to win with nine wickets in hand - a seemingly impossible task considering neither team had scored more than 300 in the match, and Vidarbha's last four totals read 61, 138, 139 and 147. But Ravi Jangid, Himanshu Joshi and Shalabh Shrivastava all got half-centuries for Vidarbha to surprise Services who had actually declared at the end of the third day in search of a victory. Services ran out three of Vidarbha's batsmen and Amrinder and Yashpal Singh got three wickets each to give them their second victory of the season. The win takes Services to second place in the Group B table. Andhra Pradesh picked up their first win of the season despite a century by Jammu & Kashmir's Parvez Rasool at the Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground in Jammu. Venugopal Rao got 54 in Andhra's second as the visitors won by seven wickets. Maharashtra widened the gap at the top of the Group B table to four, as they picked up three points from their game against Kerala at the Nehru Stadium in Kochi. After three rain-affected days, there was finally a whole day's play, and it was just enough for the Maharashtra bowlers to skittle Kerala out for 221 and take the points for a first-innings lead. After a solid start thanks to opener Abhishek Hegde's 56, Kerala lost three quick wickets to go from 97 for 1 to 128 for 4. Captain Raiphi Gomez and Sreekumar Nair offered some resistance with a 50-run partnership but Kerala lost their last six wickets for 43 runs and couldn't last till stumps. The match was destined for a draw after Hyderabad avoided the follow-on on the third day, but Goa secured the first-innings lead after wiping out the hosts' last five wickets for 43 runs on the fourth morning. Offspinner Amit Yadav finished with figures of 4 for 68 for Goa. The visitors had some batting practice for the rest of the last day and opener Vaibhav Naik got an unbeaten half-century.

Good century by Rahane, the second half a very attacking one. And that's his 10th Ranji century. Wasim Jaffer also moved past Amarjit Kaypee to 28 centuries just 3 behind of the all time leader Ajay Sharma. Another thing to point out is that Jaffer has moved himself to the middle order this season and Onkar Gurav moving into the opener slot. Kulkarni always amongst the wickets and is the sort of bowler who keeps on coming back at the batsmen. One of the better FC bowlers in India. Once again, the catching is quite poor as Jaffer got 3 lifelines in his innings - two fairly easy catches and one missed stumping by Parthiv Patel. Karnataka with a very young but fairly experienced side keeps winning from difficult positions. Bowling powerhouse Meanwhile there is another race going on at the bottom of the table as well with Punjab and Saurashtra looking to avoid relegation. Punjab missed out on the important 6 points as Orissa held them to a draw. IMO, Punjab has promising young talents in Sarul Kanwar, Ravi Inder, Uday and Mandeep. Sarul has already made two centuries while Mandeep has had a fairly sedate but promising start. It will probably take one or two seasons for the batting to show consistent performances with Dharmani guiding the young brigade.

Ranji point table: Saurashtra's performance has been most disappointing this year, just because two of their star players couldn't turn up for them. Another most disappointing feature of this tournament has been that not a single spinner has caught eye with an explosive performance, along with consistent performance in rest of the matches till now. Who have been the batsmen or bowlers who can possibly turn up India in future, based on this Ranji? Can someone list them? Last year Pandey and Mithun had created waves with their performances but this year, they seem to be going through second season blues. If not Mithun, Pandey is certainly not the same batsman he last year was, despite the second inning ton against HP. So who are the players to have emerged this year?

I dont see much difference in Pandeys form here ...this was his second hundred in 2nd innings , with Karnataka in deep trouble , he was doing the same in last season too ..most of his big knocks wer under pressure ..am still not convinced hes good enough for India cap though

According to the CAB, Ganguly would be available for Bengal's final elite group ‘A' league match against Railways to be played in New Delhi. Bengal also made two changes brining in left-hand batsman Writam Porel and wicketkeeper-batsman Shreevats Goswami in place of Sayan Shekhar Mondal and Gitimoy Bose. While Delhi was expected to play their game against Railways, starting Wednesday, at Roshanara; the think tank has now decided to move the keenly-awaited clash against Mumbai from Ferozshah Kotla to their lucky venue. After the Mithun Manhas led side triumphed over Assam by 7 wickets last Saturday, Delhi took their outright win tally to 3 from last 4 games at Roshanara. But staying away from Kotla means the Delhi Ranji players would be denied the rare opportunity to be on television since the domestic broadcasters, citing lack of facilities, have refused to telecast games from Roshanara. “It was decided in consultation with the DDCA Sports Secretary Sunil Dev that we will hold our last league match at the Roshanara itself. Delhi’s game was to be telecast but with the game being shifted the broadcasters demanded certain facilities that would have cost us Rs 15 lakh. We are not ready to shell out that amount,” Chetan Chauhan, DDCA vice-president and chairman of selectors told Sportline. “Even if Delhi are through to the knockout stage before the last match against Mumbai, we would still want to play the game here. Delhi-Mumbai is a grudge match and we feel we have a big chance to win the match on a green-top. It will be good to test the might of Mumbai batting against our bowling. As of now our focus is on this week’s game against Railways but the team is eager to play Mumbai, “ says a senior member of the Delhi team. Incidentally, Delhi team wanted to shift all their home matches to the Roshanara given their four-pronged pace attack to take home advantage but were forced by the DDCA to play their first two games of the season at the Kotla as the ICC pitch consultant wanted to see a competitive game before certifying the venue fit for the World Cup games.
