ROUND VII, DAY TWO Delhi vs Mumbai Abdulla puts Mumbai in command against Delhi Talented left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla ran through the Delhi middle-order with a five-wicket haul as Mumbai bowled out hosts for 201 thereby taking a first innings lead of 66 runs in the final group league encounter being held at the Roshanara ground. After Abdulla (5/25) decimated Delhi, Mumbai scored another 74 runs losing two wickets in the process. The defending champions now enjoy a lead of 140 runs with eight wickets remaining. Save captain Mithun Manhas (66)none of the Delhi batsmen showed any signs of taking any responsibility in a crunch match as they threw away their wickets. It was Moondeep Mangela who started the slide dismissing Shikhar Dhawan caught by Rohit Sharma. However Manhas and Mayank Tehlan (29) added 77 runs for the fourth wicket as Delhi reached 150 for three. However the next seven wickets feel for just 51 runs with Abdulla taking five of them and Aavishkar Salvi taking the other two. Salvi bowled one in the line of the stumps as Manhas went for a cut without having much room to execute it and the ball clipped the off-bail. Abdulla then got Tehlan caught by Prashant Waghela as the others like Rajat Bhatia, Puneet Bisht, Pradeep Sangwan, Sumit Narwal followed the suit playing poor shots. When Mumbai batted in the second innings, wicketkeeper-batsman Omkar Gurav (30) and opener Sahil Kukreja (25 n.o) scored 58 runs for the first wicket before Gurav was caught by Bisht off Pradeep Sangwan's bowling. Prashant Waghela who played at No. 3 in place of Ajinkya Rahane failed for the second time in this match nicking one to Bisht off Narwal's bowling. UP vs Karnataka Karnataka in control against UP Kanpur: Riding on C M Gautam's century, Karnataka piled up 416 runs in their first innings and then reduced Uttar Pradesh to 163 for five at the end of second day's play in their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match. Gautam (115) started from where he had left last evening and, together with Udit Patel (72), added 126 runs for the ninth wicket to guide Karnataka past the 400-run mark. For UP, leg-spinner Piyush Chawla added one more wicket to his four overnight to finish with figures of five for 95. At stumps, Bhuvneshwar Kumar (51 n.o.) and Chawla (43 n.o.) were holding fort for the home team. Medium pacer R Vinay Kumar picked up two wickets for Karnataka while veteran Sunil Joshi, Sreenath Aravind and Patel accounted for one each. Earlier, resuming at an overnight score of 274 for seven, Gautam was confidence personified and did not give an inch to the UP bowlers during his patient 185-ball stay at the crease. After Joshi (26) was lbw by Kumar, Gautam found an able ally down the order in Patel, and the duo mixed caution with aggression to carry on the visitors' march. The duo frustrated the UP bowlers for nearly 30 overs before Patel's gutsy 96-ball innings was cut short by Chawla, and then Gautam followed suit to draw the curtains on Karnataka's innings. In reply to Karnataka's total, UP started shakily losing their first three batsmen for just 15 runs. If that was not enough, skipper Mohammad Kaif (23) and Parvinder Singh (22) also disappointed after getting starts to leave the hosts tottering at 90 for five. Kumar and Chawla then joined hands and stitched an unbeaten 73-run stand to somewhat resurrect the UP innings. Railways vs Bengal Railways in control against Bengal New Delhi: Gritty half centuries by Prashant Awasthi and Mahesh Rawat put Railways in command as they scored 250 for six by stumps on day two in reply to Bengal's modest first innings score of 201 in their final group league encounter of the Ranji Trophy at the Karnail Singh Stadium. It was the 81-run fifth wicket partnership between Awasthi and Rawat that put Railways in driver's seat. Awasthi scored a gutsy 73 but, more importantly, batted for close to three and half hours hitting seven boundaries in the process. Former India A and Rajasthan Royals keeper Rawat scored 52 off 102 deliveries with the help of five boundaries. Railways will now look to go for the kill with a couple of days left if they can manage a sizeable lead by the first session tomorrow. With Bengal spinners, especially left-armer Iresh Saxena, failing to make any sort of impact, it will be tough for Manoj Tiwary and company to make a comeback. Worse, opener Arindam Das has badly hurt his left elbow while fielding and is unlikely to open when Bengal come out to bat in the second innings. Even Sourav Ganguly who took active participation during the numerous bowling changes and field placements, ran out of ideas as Saxena and company failed to hit right areas. The pitch certainly eased out and that helped Railways. If Railways batsmen were discrete in shot selection, the Bengal bowlers helped them with a below par effort save Laxmi Ratan Shukla (two wickets) who was able to get a fair bit of movement. Bengal started off well when Ranadeb Bose got Faiz Fazal (7) to edge one to skipper Manoj Tiwary in the slip cordon. However Shreyas Khanolkar (26) and Sanjay Bangar (29) added 47 runs in quick time through a flurry of boundaries. Saurashtra vs Assam Saurashtra have edge over Assam Rajkot: Ravindra Jadeja's all-round show helped Saurashtra consolidate their position on the second day of their must-win Super League Ranji Trophy encounter against Assam. After helping his team restrict Assam for a paltry 127 with a five-wicket haul, the India international shone with the bat playing a valuable innings of 84 in the team's second innings. Thanks to Jadeja's all-round efforts, Saurashtra, who were 233 for nine at stumps, stretched their overall lead to 246. Jadeja hit seven boundaries before Arlen Konwar brought to an end his 188-minute stay at the wicket. Knowar was the most impressive of Assam bowlers picking up four for 59, while Sarupam Purkayastha and Tarjinder Singh finished with two wickets each. Earlier Jadeja and Kmalesh Makvana shared the spoils as Assam batsmen failed to cash in on their bowlers' efforts who packed off the hosts for 140 in their first innings at the Khandheri Cricket Stadium here. While Jadeja had figures of five for 43, Makvana finished with four for 45 in 15 overs. Lower order batsman Purkayastha top-scored for Assam with 23 as none in the top order could counter the Jadeja and Makvana. Haryana vs Orissa Haryana take first-innings lead vs Orissa Rohtak: Haryana managed to take a slender first innings lead over Orissa before reducing them to 64 for five in their second essay at the end of the second day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match. Replying to Orissa's first innings score of 175, Haryana were all-out for 202, thereby getting 27-run first innings lead. And then the hosts went on to leave the visitors struggling at 64 for five at stumps with Biplab Samantray (4) and Subhrajit Sahoo (10) battling it out in the middle. Earlier, resuming at an overnight total of 75 for four, Haryana got off to a good start with both the not out batsmen -- Hemang Badani, batting on 14 and Sachin Rana on 19, playing with lot of assurance. Both cautiously avoided risky shots but Rana failed to sustain for long and fell for a well-made 38 off 89 balls studded with three fours. But a slow but steady Badani continued in the able company of Joginder Sharma (26) before getting dismissed for a 103-ball 31. Soon even Joginder followed his partner into the pavilion, with Haryana scoreboard reading 155 for seven, still needing another 21 runs to get past Orissa's first innings score. However, skipper Amit Mishra (31) and Dhruv Singh (7) made sure that they achieve it to give Haryana an upper hand in this match. Finally, the hosts' innings folded for 202. Orissa, in their second innings, yet again got off to a disastrous start and could never recover from that position. The top and middle order returned to the dressing room in no time at all. After getting openers Natraj Behera (6) and Paresh Patel (17) out cheaply, Haryana bowlers also sent back Niranjan Behera (4), Bikas Pati (5) and Govind Poddar (11), leaving Orissa reeling at 53 for five. While Joginder Sharma (2/11) and Sachin Rana (2/03) accounted for two wickets each, Amit Mishra (1/17) chipped in with one. Tamil Nadu vs Gujarat Tamil Nadu in command vs Gujarat Chennai: Tamil Nadu inched towards getting a vital first innings lead against Gujarat as they were 158 for three at close in reply to the visitors' 173 in the final group league encounter of the Ranji Trophy. India's new ODI star Ravinchandran Ashwin (5/57) and Suresh Kumar (four for 42), restricted Gujarat to a paltry 173. But for a 54-run stand for the seventh wicket between top-scorer Pratharesh Parmar (67) and Salil Yadav (13), Gujarat, who recovered from 80 for six, would have been in an even worse situation. However, Tamil Nadu quickly recovered from an early blow when opener Abhinav Mukund fell cheaply for seven runs. At close, Subramaniam Badrinath (72 batting) and Arun Karthik (60 batting) were at the crease having put on 115 runs for the third wicket. Baroda vs Himachal Pradesh Baroda in control against HP Vadodara: Captain Pinal Shah scored a brilliant 132 to put Baroda in a commanding position against Himachal Pradesh at the end of second day's play in their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match. At stumps, Himachal Pradesh were 108 runs for loss of four wickets in their second innings, still needing 123 more to wipe out the home team's 231-run first inning lead. Resuming at the overnight score of 173 for five, Baroda added 177 more runs to finish their first essay on 350 in reply to HP's 119. Skipper Shah anchored the Baroda innings with a 157-ball 132 during which he hit 15 boundaries. Shah was also associated in two big partnerships for Baroda -- first a 74-run sixth-wicket stand with Kedar Devdhar (81) and then 77 runs with last wicket Murtuza Vahora (11). Medium pacers Rishi Dhawan (4/105) and Vikramjeet Malik (3/73) were the star bowlers for HP. Coming onto bat in their second essay, HP yet again struggled as they lost three quick wickets at the team's total of 28. But skipper Paras Dogra (53) and Varun Sharma (26 n.o.) steadied the ship with a 74-runs fourth wicket stand before the former was caught by Rakesh Solanki off Vahora.

ROUND VII, DAY THREE Delhi vs Mumbai Rohit Sharma's ton all but knocks out Delhi Rohit Sharma hit a classy 148 and added 191 runs for the fifth wicket with Prashant Naik to practically shut out Delhi's chances of making it to the knock-out phase of Ranji Trophy Super League. At stumps on the third day, Mumbai were 487 for 8, their lead extended to a massive 553 runs, which is virtually impossible to chase down in 90 overs on Saturday, the concluding day of the match. Resuming at 74 for two, Mumbai scored 413 runs on a single day as Delhi's bowlers lost the plot in the last two sessions when the visitors were reduced to 169 for five before lunch. After Rohit displayed his class for nearly four hours, with good support from Naik, it was young Iqbal Abdulla who took the already demoralised Delhi attack to cleaners with some lusty blows as the match became dead as a contest. The match, billed as a contest between two of the best young talents in the country -- Rohit and Virat Kohli -- went in favour of the Mumbai lad as his silken drives and pull-shots were an absolute delight to watch. Even national selector from North Zone Yashpal Sharma had a look of appreciation, as Rohit hit a couple of sixes each off pacers Pawan Suyal and Sumit Narwal. The way he pulled Suyal over deep mid-wicket was a delight to watch. Naik (81, 159 balls, 15x4) too blossomed in Rohit's company, hitting some exquisite drives. Rohit steered Pradeep Sangwan for a boundary to complete his century off only 97 deliveries. He was dismissed at the stroke of tea. Once Rohit was dismissed with Mumbai's lead crossing the 400-run mark, the Delhi bowlers did not have any zeal to fight. Abdulla joined the party as he repeatedly hit upper-cuts, scoring 73 off only 69 deliveries, inclusive of 11 boundaries and a six. Even Moondeep Mangela hit five boundaries to remain unbeaten on 26. Brief score: Delhi (1st innings): 201 Mumbai (1st innings): 267 & 487 for 8 in 121 overs (Rohit Sharma 148, Prashant Naik 81, Iqbal Abdullah 73 not out; Sumit Narwal 3/84, Pradeep Sangwan 3/111). Saurashtra vs Assam Saurashtra beat Assam, retain Elite berth The spin duo of Kamlesh Makwana and Ravindra Jadeja wrecked havoc as Saurashtra crushed Assam by 172 runs to secure five points and retain its place in the Ranji Trophy Elite division, in Rajkot, on Friday. While Makwana snared six wickets, Jadeja picked three. Saurashtra were in a must-win situation, having only five points, while Assam needed a point to avert relegation, but on the turning track of the SCA stadium in Khandheri, the visiting batsmen could not resist Makwana and Jadeja while chasing a target of 249. The visitors were bundled out for 76 in just 29.3 overs on the third day. Saurashtra scored 140 runs in the first innings and restricted Assam to 127. In their second essay the hosts made 235 in which Jadeja contributed with 84 and set Assam a target of 249 runs to win. Resuming at their overnight total of 233 for 9, Saurashtra's batsmen Saurya Sanandiya and Hardik Rathod could not do much, adding only two runs, and the hosts were all out of 235. Arnel Konwar was the pick of the Assam bowlers, claiming four wickets and conceding 59 runs while Terjinder Singh finished with three for 34. Chasing a target of 249, none of the Assam batsmen could resist the spin attack of Makwana-Jadeja duo and the visitors at one stage were 76 for 6, lost another four wickets without adding a single run. S Sriram (24), Gokul Sharma (20), Abu Nachim Ahmed (16) and Amol Majumdar (12) could reach the double digit while five batsmen including Dhiraj Jadhav failed to open their account. Makwana was the wrecker-in-chief, taking six wickets and conceding only 22 runs in his 10.3 overs. He was ably supported by Jadeja, who finished with three for 25 off his 13 overs. With this win, Saurashtra secured five points and finished with 10 to retain their place in the elite division, while Assam, who needed a point failed to do so, were relegated to the plate division. Baroda vs Himachal Pradesh Pathan bowls Baroda to massive win over HP Yusuf Pathan snared six wickets in a devastating spell as Baroda spanked Himachal Pradesh by an innings and 17 runs to qualify for the knock-out stage after finishing second in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group 'B'. Pathan's fine bowling performance was the highlight of the match, which ended with more than a day's play to spare. Pathan conceded just 74 runs in his brilliant spell and his performance also helped Baroda get a bonus point from the victory. With the win, Baroda's points tally went up to 20, placing them second on the league table. Resuming at the overnight score of 108 for four, the visitors failed to prolong the innings, losing six wickets for just 110 runs. Only four batsmen -- Varun Sharma (43), Paras Dogra(53), Vinit Indulkar (36) and Rishi Dhavan (36) -- put up a fight as they put up 214 runs in the second innings. UP vs Karnataka Chawla hits 104 but UP concede lead to Karnataka Piyush Chawla's second first class century went in vain as Karnataka took firm control of the proceedings on the penultimate day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match in Kanpur on Friday. Chawla scored a well-compiled 104 off 135 deliveries to guide UP to 319 in their first innings, in reply to Karnataka's 416. At stumps, the visitors were sitting pretty at 178 for two in their second essay, an overall lead on 275 runs over UP, with just a day to go. Amit Verma (31) and Manish Pandey (9) were at the crease when stumps were drawn after 42 overs. Out-of-form Robin Uthappa (67) and K B Pawan (50) gave Karnataka a solid start in their second innings in a 128-run opening stand before both fell to Rohit Choudhary (2-45). Earlier, resuming at 163 for five, Chawla and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar (62) carried on from where they left on Thursday evening and added 45 runs to their overnight 73-run seventh-wicket stand before the latter was caught by Pandey off Stuart Binny. Chawla then shared 45 runs for the eighth wicket with wicketkeeper Aamir Khan (39) before he was caught by Sreenath Arvind at the deep off Verma. The diminutive left-hander struck 18 fours and one lofty hit over the fence. Rohit Choudhary (17) and Praveen Gupta (20 not out) too made useful contributions down the order but eventually it was not enough to overhaul Karnataka's first innings total. The home team fell short by 97 runs. Udit Patel (3-92) and Verma (2-33) shone with the ball for Karnataka. Railways vs Bengal Bengal face innings defeat by Railways Railways are as good as through to the knock-out stage of the Ranji Trophy. They are at the verge of inflicting a humiliating innings defeat on Bengal, having reduced them to 105 for 6 in their second innings at the end of third day's play, in Delhi, on Friday. It will be one of the most embarrassing defeats for Bengal in the last couple of years, especially with experienced former India captain Sourav Ganguly in their ranks. Bengal have now made a habit of losing crunch games as has happened thrice in two seasons. They lost a do-or-die game to Uttar Pradesh last season in Ranji Trophy and lost three consecutive Vijay Hazare Trophy finals. Even the much-hyped return of Sourav Ganguly (7) failed to lift Bengal. The veteran batsman was dismissed in identical fashion as in the first innings. He played on to his stumps as he found a nemesis in Anureet Singh. With Arindam Das unlikely to bat on Saturday, Railways now need two wickets to wrap the proceedings. Resuming on 250 for six, Railways, in reply to Bengal's score of 201 in their first essay, were 345 all out. Overnight batsmen Dhiren Salvi and JP Yadav (24) gave Railways a good start, the former resuming on 35 and going on to score 81. Even Nileshkumar Chauhan (26) contributed useful runs towards the end to give Railways an edge in the match. Bengal, in their second essay, again failed to apply themselves as lost wickets at regular intervals. Skipper Manoj Tiwary (17) and Dibyendu Chakrabarty (21) got debatable decisions. The delivery from Murali Kartik that got Manoj out seemed to have pitched well outside the off-stump as the Bengal captain went for a sweep. Umpire PG Pathak raised his dreaded finger thinking the ball pitched in line of stumps. Chakrabarty too seemed stunned after he was given out caught by Bangar off Kartik when it looked as if it hit him on the shoulders. Haryana vs Orissa Haryana trounce Orissa to enter knock-out stage Haryana registered a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Orissa on the third day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match to book a berth in the knock-out stage of the tournament, in Rohtak, on Friday. Haryana, who were already on course for victory, played according to the script on Friday to first bundle out Orissa for just 170 and then chase down the target of 144 easily. Resuming at 64 for 5, overnight Orissa batsmen Biplab Samantray, batting on 4, and Subhrajit Sahoo on 10, did not let the Haryana bowlers dominate as they hold on to their wickets. The duo battled it out in the middle, playing with assurance and went on to put up a valuable 63-run partnership before Samantray gave in. It was skipper Amit Mishra who drew first blood for Haryana by dismissing Samantray (31 off 95 balls) in the 54th over. Mishra was quick to add another wicket to his kitty, this time by sending back Sahoo after a well-made 50 from 72 balls, inclusive of six fours. Thereafter, although Lagnajit Samal (18) and Alok Sahoo (20) tried to consolidate the innings, in a brief 33-run stand, Orissa's second innings folded for a mere 170. Mishra finished with figures of three for 49, while Joginder Sharma (2-34), Sachin Rana (2-34) and Ajit Chandila (2-15) took two wickets each. Haryana, who already had a 27-run first innings lead, hence had to chase only 144 runs for victory, which they achieved comprehensively, losing just three wickets. Openers Nitin Saini (67) and Rahul Dewan (23), and then Ankit Rawat (34 not out), chipped in with their useful contributions to drive Haryana home. Earlier, in the first innings, Orissa were bundled out for 175, while Haryana scored 202. Tamil Nadu vs Gujarat TN-Gujarat third day washed out Overnight rains rendered play impossible on the penultimate day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match between Gujarat and Tamil Nadu in Chennai on Friday. Umpires held three inspections and abandoned the match without a ball being bowled because of wet ground conditions. After Gujarat folded for 173 in their first innings, Tamil Nadu were comfortably placed at 158 for three and on the verge of gaining the vital first innings lead.
