And it depends on the individual. At one point Zak was setting the field for the bowlers (a year or 2 back) I saw a couple of occasions when Sachin was telling Dhoni on where to move the fielders. Don't make it seem like Dhoni has set out a 'my way or the highway' policy

For me such decision like bowling Ashwin in the super over (sorry for dragging T20 kirkut in, but that one comes to mind right now, hence the eg.) are simply beyond my cricketing senses. You can argue him being a genius, unorthodox captain, but I ain't buying it.

And today, Dhoni did not go for that deep point straight after 3rd wicket fell. Only when the batsmen started scoring 4s (they hit 4-5 4s in 2-3overs), did he go for that field. Sitting outside and criticising the decision is all good, but the guy on the field has to make those decision during the run of play. Some days it will work, on occasions it won't come off.

I wasn't talking about the deep point, but field setting as a whole. When clarke was in before he scored any boundaries and stuff the field was the same in-out field for him (dunno about deep point). Applying pressure on a new batsmen by restricting runs is pretty basic - why can't he just stick to it? Anyways hope you got my point, so end of. Not interested in stretching this too far.

I understand that. But I highly doubt the bowlers will do it unless in a crisis. They almost always bowl to the field set by the captain unless they're being spanked around. I highly doubt if a bowler will advice captain to bring in fielders to create the pressure for the new batsman.

General argument in his defence, has been his record which has been unquestionably great. But you have to know how much you put it down to the "golden generation" and how to much to his captaincy. I think when our biggies retire he will be sorely exposed. Ponting and Waugh weren't great captains. You could see it when they had to lead relatively mediocre sides. Dhoni doesn't seem aggressive and pro active enough to my liking and this will not work in SA. He lets the game drift. In our ODI series loss to Aus, I think Dhoni's captaincy was a major disappointment and as Warne said was major cause for loss. I am not on his case yet, but as an Indian fan, I expect more from him.
