BERGKAMP Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I bet he has an uncle or dad's best mate high up in the WICB.
Karan114 Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Pretty much go into every game with ten players. Forget Tests, this bloke isn't even good enough for some of the better FC teams around the world.
Malcolm Merlyn Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 WICB follies too many. They made Sammy the captain as they knew Sammy will do what they will ask him to do and wont raise his voice as Sammy wont find a regular place in the team unless he is the captain. WI attack right know looks good with Bishoo,Rampaul and Roach.Taylor or Edwards are both fit and will make the attack more effective if added with the above mentioned 3.But Sammy has taken the place of a regular bowler even though he bowls ****. Sammy doesnt deserve a place in the WI team but was made the captain in place of Sarwan or Chanderpaul. WICB is just destroying cricket in the WI,no doubt none of the star players are on good terms with the pathetic board.
jairamesh Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Shouldn't make to the team as a batsman or a bowler, but he's made captain. After Gayle they should have made Sarwan the captain. But I guess the WICB needed a brownnose. Amongst odi captains now of test playing nations ofcourse 1.Dhoni 2.Ponting 3.Strauss 4.Smith 5.Afridi 6.Sangakara 7.Vettori 8.Shakib 9.Sammy in what order would you rate them? I'm pretty sure Sammy leads from the bottom, I would so far go and claim he's probably the worst player ever to be captain. Damn shame the legacy that was West Indies had to be reduced to this. You seem to be hopelessly out of date. I think you might want to check the captains of the (highlighted) above respective nations again!
Ultimate_Game Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Based on what Sammy has achieved with the kind of talent at his level I say he's doing a great job. He may not be the most talented cricketer in the world, or may not even have a great team at his disposal but he has achieved more than what most of the folks expected him to IMO. Sammy for President I say!
Cricket Tragic Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Let's not get carried away. He is still a very mediocre player. What he does have is good attitude and he badly wants to see the WI do well. That alone will not do. He needs to put in more performances like he did in the 1st test.

Sometimes a "mediocre" player is of more value than so called "superstars" if it helps the team achieve its potential. So far he's done a decent job and with Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Edwards & Taylor back he could be a decent captain for WI. If I were Sammy I would ask WICB to prepare fast and bouncy tracks for India, play 4 fast bowlers in Taylor, Edwards, Rampaul and Roach (or maybe Bishoo in place of Edwards or Taylor since Sammy himself is a pace option) and sort out differences with Gayle & Dwayne Bravo. I wouldn't be surprized if this WI team springs a surprize given the right conditions.

You might want to check out the op date Einstein. Great performance from the hack though yesterday. Made my day.:hatsoff:
CoverDrive Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Well deserved respect for the guy!!! Maybe we are being too harsh on him - knew exactly what was required on this pitch and executed the plan to perfection. Indians should be respectful of this bowling lineup- Rampaul seems to be in very good form and bishoo is excellent
Dravid Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Indians should be respectful of this bowling lineup- Rampaul seems to be in very good form and bishoo is excellent you sure its not just that paki batting lineup? :hysterical: sammy 5 wickets :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:
Chandan Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Read this blog today and thought of sharing it here: Sammy's five-for, a captain's spell I was amazed to know that there are only 11 instances in the history of cricket where a captain has taken a 5 for, defending a total in the final inning. And guess what, best figure(economy wise) is that of an Indian captain! However medicre player Sammy might be, this test victory was a very important one for WI, and this performance was even more important for Sammy individually.

Well, Chandan if you are going to apply so many filters - 5 for, match won, last innings, as captain - the results are going to be sparse. For example, http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?captain=1;class=1;filter=advanced;innings_number=4;orderby=batted_score;result=1;runsmin1=100;runsval1=runs;template=results;type=batting;view=innings is the list of captains to score a century in the last innings of a test to win a test - only 17, despite the fact that batting captains are much more common. That shouldn't detract from the main point that Sammy is a mediocre player. Can anyone say for sure that Taylor or Edwards would not have a done better?

Even if he got a five for, it won't change this fact for long that he is a mediocre player. But he needed this performance as a skipper to gain faith among his team mates I suppose, just to unite the team and get it focused. I don't know how good Sammy is for WI, or who can take his place for good, but they certainly need some stability after so much of turbulence, to fucus in the right direction.
The Dark Horse Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Good performances need to be appreciated rather than dwelling on mediocracy.
maniac Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Let's not forget Afridi was also a Test Captain...Lets not forget Lee Germon,Adam Hollioke and Rashid Latif .We could have another potential candidate in Botha. Compared to some of the names I have mentioned definetely Sammy ain't that bad.
Gotham Cronie Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Shoaib Malik is a good ODI player but as a test captain, he has to be one of the worst.
Cricket Tragic Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 What about Wasim Bari? He was a very good keeper but his batting was dire.
