maniac Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 At the beggining of the 80's we know Sunil Gavaskar was the captain of our national team...and by 82-83 season we appointed a new caaptain in Kapil Dev Clearly this could have been because Sunny might not have been a success during this period.then we created history in 1983 with Kapil leading us to the world cup. Then the next big moment in Indian cricket history was the world championship triumph in Australia,we once again had sunny as our captain. So in a span of 2 years we replaced aour world-cup winning captain??? Here is were it gets more confusing,1987 Prudential world cup once again we have Kapil as our captain,We lose in the semis and again he is dropped as a captain. From Vengsarkar onwards there was more consistency and captaincy transfer was more systematic. I would be really interested in knowing wtah thappend during this time period when captaincy was shuffled between the two with neither of them being droppped due to form but playing under each other. It would be great if any one can explain what happened during this time period

RamP Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Good question. I was very young during that period to understand anything about sports politics. Just enjoyed watching it on TV. May be outsider, mr. cricket, bossbhai can throw some light.
putrevus Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Kapil dev took over the captaincy after 1982-83 pakistan tour where India lost 3-0 under Gavaskar for the tour to West-Indies, he lost that series 2-0 but won the world cup in june 1983. Then he was captain for two series one against pakistan then westindies at home which he lost 3-0.But he was injured for initial Asia cup which began Sharjah's cricketing Journey.India won that cup under Gavaskar so he was retained as captain again for Pakistan tour and England home series which England won despite being outplayed by India in first test. During that series Kapil dev was dropped for first time for playing a rash shot during Delhi 2nd test. When India lost that series 2-1 Gavaskar before they could sack him announced he wont captain India again after 1985 B&H Cup which India again won against against all odds. Kapil was given captaincy again starting from Sharjah's Rothman's cup which India won till that 1987 world cup semifinal loss where they were favorites only to be swept away literally by Gooch, and Kapil dev never placed a fielder to cut his sweep shot. So in span of two years Kapil dev became a world cup winning captain who lost his place in the team only to became captain again.

Regarding http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65116.html I remember (vaguely) watching this live on TV. Why was there no sweeper fielders against Gooch and Gatting? Just braindead decision by Kaps? Or were they encouraging them to sweep to get wicket and it backfired badly!
