Population growth in South India extremely low compared to North and Central India

With the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) continuing at 2.8 per cent, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has pushed back the target date for achieving population stabilisation to 2070 from 2045, stipulated in the National Population Policy (NPP) 2000. It is “extremely difficult†to achieve it by 2045. At the current rate of implementation, we expect population stabilisation to be achieved only in 2070, with a population of 170 crore,†Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told members of the National Commission on Population on Thursday. It is chaired by Prime Minster Manmohan Singh. Drawing the commission's attention to the serious ramifications for the overall development of the country, Mr. Azad said the challenge was to make up for lost time, bring back family planning and population stabilisation into political discourse and speed up the response at all levels. The NPP 2000 laid down meeting the unmet need for family planning and health care infrastructure as an immediate objective; its mid-term objective was to achieve a TFR of 2.1 per cent by 2010 and the long-term goal was to attain population stabilisation by 2045. Mr. Azad said one of the key challenges was to effectively implement laws on prevention of child marriage, sex determination and foeticide, and domestic violence. Calling for strong political support to deal with these issues, he asked his Cabinet colleagues and Chief Ministers to provide leadership and utilise whatever resources they had to promote the welfare of girls. These were social issues that transcended his Ministry and necessitated every one's support. While there was a declining trend in fertility rates in 14 States, northern and central parts of the country continued to have persistently high TFRs ranging from 3 to 3.9 per cent, Mr. Azad said. It is estimated that nearly half the population growth will be from just seven States and 22 per cent from Uttar Pradesh alone. This is against the combined contribution of 13 per cent from the southern States of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Spelling out the plans to achieve population stabilisation, Mr. Azad said a special division would be set up in the Ministry at the Central and State levels. Similar administrative set-ups would be established at the district and block levels. Also, post-partum centres would come up for facilitating institutional deliveries. A proposal to substantially enhance compensation for women undergoing sterilisation from Rs. 600 and to make available contraceptives on the doorstep at the village level through Accredited Social Health Activists was being considered , Mr. Azad said.

Govt. is now saying population stabilization cannot be done till 2045 which was the earlier deadline and they are now revising it to 2070 with 170 crore population. Frankly speaking if some measures are not taken soon then even in 2070 population growth wont stop. Stop benefits to people giving birth to more than two children and give special benefit to couples giving birth to only one child. Imagine if we have 200 crores population or so in the future then there would be scarcity of food to eat, water to drink, farm land to grow crops etc. :nervous:

Thereabouts .. most experts in our country consider population as a symptom and not as the root cause, and this could be the evidence to that theory. Which might be good news, since our administration is not going to implement any draconian laws on population control.

I would somewhat agree to your point maybe... literacy rate in the four Southern states is a lot higher compared to Northern and Central states with Kerala being the most literate.

With the increase in population more jungles and farm lands would be converted to residential and urban lands leading to scarcity of farm lands and thereby lesser food production. We are already suffering a huge scarcity of food and if population keeps on growing at this rate it would be impossible to sustain the country. And India is somewhat of an earthquake prone zone and hence govt. does not give permission easily for highrise buiildings too .. 3 or 4 stories is the maximum allowed in most parts of India by the govt. And you are saying about 1.5 billion whereas the govt is saying 1.7 billion in 2070 and that too not fully sure till then too. We will face a huge resource crisis in the future if this population growth is somehow not controlled.

As long as they’re viewed as some sort of child-bearing vehicle by men, especially in rural areas, then you’ll continue to have families with upwards of 4 children. That is why, we have to give the choice of conception back to the women and that can be done only through better awareness, more publicity about contraceptives etc.

I agree. But to be frank it has more to do about awareness and not only about awareness of women. If husbands are educated then also they can take a wise decision of giving birth to one or two children. In the urban centers you hardly find couples with more than one or two children and it cannot be a mere coincidence. On the other hand in the slums itself in urban centers you would find couples with loads of children. In rural areas too the number of children per couple is more. So, it has certainly to do with education and awareness. Sex education should also be made mandatory in all schools including villages so that people growing up know the various effects and responsibilities regarding the same. Sex education in schools prevail in urban centers and maybe that also helps. A lot of factors which boils down to awareness and ill effects of more children can go a long way.
