Having said that I do believe Sehwag is worthy enough of being named an Indian legend. You would be hard pressed to find him not being named in any of the all time India teams as the opening batsman.

daryl1985 Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I think so. For me Sehwag is the best batsman in the world today (Tendulkar and Sangakkara close behind). I would rate him, slightly ahead of Tendulkar as India's most important player. I think a lot of teams see him as the key wicket as he is a game changer and a matchwinner. The only hole in his resume is his 2nd innings average but if he tees off in the 1st innings, as he often does, his 2nd innings average does not matter so much.
pensionplan Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I look at Sehwag more as a wildcard among greats like SRT, VVS, RD that can be the set up man when he clicks over the first 3 days of the match that can be real insignificant on 4th and 5th day of the Tests as his second inning scores would testify and the more serious stuff on 4th and 5th day is usually left to a Laxman or a Tendulkar or even a Gambhir on some occasions in the past 23 or 24 months and ofcourse Dravid more consistently in the past years. In that sense it is hard for me to use Sehwag and Legend in the same sentence. I am up more for the word maverick associated with him.

For me yes. A great batsman needs to be counted upon in all scenarios and situations if one keeps their personal opinions aside and with Sehwag on numerous occasions he was found wanting when the team needed for him to button it down a bit in the team's 2nd innings. Call it deficiancy or unwillingness to curb his natural instincts he was not upto the task plainly put. And his second innings average which is half of his first innings I think almost points to that glaring inconsistency. To me that is too much to overcome the way I look at the game over a 5 day period and how the pendulum could swing especially if you are playing good Test teams. Hey as long as he fits your criteria call him a legend, all-time great or whatever. Afterall that is what a discussion board is all about.

His effect and Performance in the first innings is much much ahead of Any opener in the World. Which opener scores at an average of 70 in the first Innings?

Is it because he struggles on pitches that offer something to the bowler's? is it the pressure? or is it the fact that there is maybe more of an expectancy for him to play a little more sensibly in the 3rd/4th innings in the match?

When everyone was edging Mendis around during the first series of Mendis, he was offering center of the bat every time to Mendis while defending.
