Not only the rate he scores but the consistency about it. Whadda player ! Someone i would put my money to be the greatest test match winning batsman of all time. At the end of this test match we would find out ( if we are not already seeing it) ..that the difference between Kiwis drawing the match and India winning would be the sheer pace of Veeru's runs.
patriot Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 ...and Kirsten and Hammond as well. :winky:
saneindian Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Just 238 runs away from VVS!! WIll most likely move ahead of VVS by the time SA series ends!! VVS has played 189 innings and Dada 188 innings compared to Viru's 140!! After 140 innings, dont think there would have been too many batsmen who would have scored more than Viru's tally of 7325 runs.
patriot Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 Veeru is well on track to create a new world record for the fastest 8000 test runs. 675 more runs from 12 innings needed.

You are right..in the history of cricket..only Wally Hammond took lesser innings to score 7000 test runs. Veeru is No.2 in all time list.
Andy Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Keep going Viru, Be the Quickest to 10000:dance:
akshayxyz Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Just 238 runs away from VVS!! WIll most likely move ahead of VVS by the time SA series ends!! may be not - as VVS averages 90+ in this year - but you never know Very might need just one more innings :). Veru takes over VVS Or VVS keeps pace with Veru - either way the team wins. :two_thumbs_up:
ludhianvi Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Let the Juggernaut continue and pulverise the bowlers. It is a treat watching him and he makes the match all the more exciting. Totally rips apart the conventional style of play and thought process.
Bublu Bhuyan Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Average in 2nd team innings = 29.92 Average in 4th innings = 27.14

Andy Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Wow some people are back to deman Sehwags achievments by presenting 2nd innings and 4th Innings stats, forgetting the most important thing that He sets up matches for us scoring in the 1st Innings.
patriot Posted November 5, 2010 Author Posted November 5, 2010 guys cut it out. i am sure we can praise one great without pissing off fans of another, or try to come up with numbers to put down one great just because the OP may have taken an indirect dig at your fav. patriot, I understand you are a big fan of Sehwag, so is pretty much anyone on this board, but I don't see a need to take a dig at all the other guys like RD, SRT, ... just because they don't score as fast as him. They all play big big roles in our wins, some in 1st innings, some in 2nd. They all play their roles very well. If we had 6 Sehwags at the top of the order, I am not sure it would be as much fun as it is now. Remember all those NZ tests in India pre Sehwag where we failed to win more than 1 test in a series because of pathetic slow scoring and filling up the boots batting ? NZ wanted that - so that they could draw tests and they got it. Look at the scorecard of the current match and see the difference Sehwag is making. And how many times has he done it ? I like guys who play to win always...I understand that SRT and Dravid don't possess Sehwag's insane ability- no one does. But alot of times they have gotten caught up in raking in scores in draws rather than playing agressivelly and pushing for wins.
Holysmoke Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Sehwag is better than Ganguly. Question is, is he better than Laxman? Is he the 4th best Indian batsman of all time?
Andy Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Oh c'mon if we start comparing to VVS, RD, SRT the debate will never end. Fact is everyone have their Roles. Sehwags job is to set up Games for us from where our bowlers can eke out 20 wickets. VVSs job is of 2nd Innings specialist. All are best in what they are assigned to.

Makes sense if we see the pattern of wins and crucial draws over the last 2 years since India progressively has gotten better as a Test team. All these guys especially VS, SRT and VVS and to an extent GG and RD have just clicked as a unit and always in any given scenario 2-3 of them rose to the occasion and contributed big time. To me these are some special times than ever before for the Test team. We need to enjoy the time rather than pit one player versus the other and get into silly discussions as to who is better. We will realise what a special time this was when the run eventually ends. Oh by the way the last 3 Test wins - Three consecutive successful 4th inning chases of 200 or more - never happended in Test history. Plus how many times in past have we seen India falter chasing meagre totals in the 4th innings. As I said these are some special times. Enjoy it folks while it lasts!!!!!
Gunner_Mania Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 The importance of Sehwag Bangalore, Fri Nov 05 The second day's play of the first Test was most remarkable for what it did not showcase, as opposed to what it did. Both teams combined to score 227 runs for the loss of 9 wickets on Day 2 - as opposed to the 329 for 3 that were scored on Day 1. The difference between the two days can be summed up by two words only: Virender Sehwag. If ever proof was needed of the kind of impact he can have on a game, it was most tellingly provided on a day that he was absent from the batting crease. It is easy to say that the New Zealand bowlers maintained better lines on Day 2 than on Day 1. The fact is, Sehwag forces the bowlers to try new things - and therefore increase the chances of one of them going wrong - by redefining what is a good ball and what is not. A length ball outside off-stump in the corridor will be left alone most times even by the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman, but Sehwag has his own system of what to leave and what to hit. Sometimes it doesn't come off, and he ends up looking irresponsible - but a Test match average of 54.25 suggests that it comes off a lot more often than it doesn't. A number that is just as significant as Sehwag's average is his strike rate in Test matches - which stands at an unreal 81.93. Just to put things in perspective, that figure is higher than the One Day International strikes rates of such batsmen as Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, Aravinda de Silva and Saeed Anwar. It is this ability to score fast and score big that has contributed as significantly to India's rise to the top of the Test tables as have the mountains of runs scored by Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman and in the past Sourav Ganguly. What Sehwag does better than anybody else in the cricketing world is minimize the externals. Slow pitch, tight lines, overcast conditions - these are peripheral at best. He bats in the same way regardless. On pitches where run-scoring is not as easy, this quality becomes gold for the Indian team since it allows them to take early control of a match. It is true that Sehwag has not been as effective in the second innings as he has been in the first (the whys of it deserve analysis in a separate article), but because of his incredible first innings hit-rate, he sets up games for India that the cooler heads of older stalwarts can finish off. It is a happy coincidence for Indian cricket that his career has overlapped with those of Tendulkar-Dravid-Laxman. Without him, they would not have had the luxury of time and without them, he would not have had the luxury of freedom. When both combine - as they have done so remarkably for the past few years - the results are telling. That India sit at the top of the Test tree in spite of not having a single bowler who averages below 30 is testament enough of the batting firepower that they command. Common wisdom has it that matches are won by bowlers - which seems obvious enough on the face of it, since you need 20 wickets to win a match. But common wisdom assumes a limited time-span in which a side can get 20 wickets. What the batting of Sehwag has done for India is radically increase that time-span, thus altering the equation. When a team starts winning matches consistently on the strength of its batting, more than its bowling, you know you're watching something uncommon, something special, something that happens once in a generation or less. The arrival of Sehwag at the top of the world's best middle-order has been that something. An article on CB today.
punjabi_khota Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 His fast batting is going to make us lose the test. Had he taken his own sweet time, like the maharathis, we would been able to draw the game. :P
