They should not have played him if he had an injury. Our captains and team managements really don't know how to handle a young pace bowler. I hope he progresses well because the kind of swing he can get if he can maintain that and gains in speed a bit he be very handy for any batsman. Another guy I have high hopes is Sandeep Sharma who I have seen, the U-19 pace bowler who has good action and decent pace along with Rahul Shukla who I have not seen yet. Shami was very promising too in one over I saw of him, especially good action to get out swing as pace.

RR have a very competitive bowling line up of Indians. Amit Singh and Trivedi have done very well. They may not be fast or whatever, but they cannot be dropped based on performance. Add in Pankaj Singh and Chahar has some tough competition. His records other than that eight wicket haul are not too good either and his overall statistics even in First Class cricket are poor. He hasn't even played much of the other forms of the game. He is definitely more one for the future than one for now. The eight wicket haul clearly showed potential but not necessarily potential he will maximise.

Want to bowl like Steyn, not Praveen - Deepak Chahar Rajasthan's upcoming fast bowler, Deepak Chahar, was helping out young college cricketers in a tournament conducted by Red Bull. Chahar shot to fame with an incredible haul of 8/10 in the first innings in his very first Ranji game against Hyderabad in 2010 and was instrumental in Rajasthan lifting the Ranji trophy for the first time ever. He talked to Cricbuzz's Ganesh C on the sidelines of the tournament. In a free wheeling chat, Chahar was refreshingly candid about many things and talked with great passion about the Rajasthan Ranji team and fast bowling amongst other things. Read on. Can you tell us something about the Red Bull campaign? What is it about? Red Bull organised an all-India college tournament. They finally had eight teams from all three countries (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka). Mumbai and Bangalore made it to the finals and Mumbai won it. This tournament gives a lot of young cricketers a chance to shine thanks to Red Bull. Nowadays, college cricket is not of a very high standard in India. The IPL has come and there is also the Ranji trophy but Red Bull provided a platform for only college cricketers. The Man of the series, Salvi, is going to Auckland to play some domestic cricket there at the U-22 level. This is a great exposure for him. Hopefully Red Bull continues to do the same in the future to help the college cricketers. What was your role in it exactly? My role was to give support to these young cricketers and answer any questions they had. The Red Bull team had organised it very well. I only had to go there and help the players. Right so you shot to fame with the Rajasthan team that has won the Ranji trophy twice now. Can you give us some insights into what made the team work? I'll tell more about the first season. I was not able to play the entire second season as I had jaundice mid way through the second season. The first season was great and I will say it was very important for Rajasthan cricket. Rajasthan was not a well recognised team before that Ranji trophy win. After that even our junior level cricket began to improve. Our U-19 and U-16 teams reached the semi finals as well, for the first time, in the Board trophy tournaments. That first season was very important for all the players of Rajasthan. My contribution was that I think I provided a good start to our Ranji season. My debut game went very well against Hyderabad. I took eight wickets in the first innings against them and it was a good day for me. I supported my senior partner Pankaj Singh very well throughout the tournament. I would like to tell you this - He is the highest wicket taker in the last four Ranji seasons. He took around 140 wickets in the four seasons. He was contributing a lot for Rajasthan but there was no one to support him. I'd say that I did the job, of supporting him. We took around 83 wickets as a pair in that season. That was great. You were a newbie in the team so did Pankaj help you along with some tips? That was my first season. It was nice to bowl with him. Often when I was not up to the mark while bowling in the 'nets', he would come to me and talk to me about my problems. Mostly I needed someone to guide me and teach me how to bowl when things were not going my way. There were no problems when it was going good for me - like in my first match when everything was working right, I did not need anyone to tell me what to do. He helped me through the tough periods and I thank him for that. He is still helping me. What about the other seniors, guys like Aakash Chopra and Hrishikesh Kanitkar, who were not from Rajasthan, how did they help? I think their role was very important, in fact it was the most important role. I've heard stories that earlier the senior Rajasthan players were rude to the junior players. The youngsters were not able to go up and talk to them about the mistakes they were doing. I've only heard about this. I've not seen it personally but I heard a lot of stories about it. What I found in that season was Aakash bhaiya (Aakash Chopra), Hrishi bhaiya (Hrishikesh Kanitkar) and Parida bahiya (Rashminandan Parida) were so friendly. I could go into their room at any time, night or day, and talk to them about anything. Even my personal life, and I was doing that. With Aakash bhaiya and Hrishi bhaiya I shared all these things. They were also interested to know about me, my family. They cared about what was going on in my family. That was a very important thing. I think we won that Ranji trophy because of those senior players. We had a free relationship with the senior players and that was quite good. We'll talk a little about fast bowling. As a budding fast bowler, how do the coaches help in training and in keeping you fit? I think in cricket, the toughest job is fast bowling. We have to work harder than the spinners and the batsmen. We tend to get injured very often . Even with a light injury like a finger injury a batsman can manage to bat but that is not possible with fast bowling. We have to do a lot of gym work and training to keep fit. We also have to practice differently for getting the swing along with speed and line and length. I think it is a very tough job but it also pays off very quickly, in India. If you see the Ranji trophy, there are so many batsmen who perform so well, like Badrinath, but they are not able to get a chance in the Indian team. A fast bowler though, if he performs in just two seasons, he will definitely get a chance to play for India. So you've played one and a half seasons of top level domestic cricket. Who was the toughest to bowl to? (thinks) I don't think anyone is tough to bowl to. When I'm bowling well and in my rhythm, I can get anyone out. I've always thought that it all depends on me. If I can bowl well I can get any batsman in the world but when I'm not bowling well, even a tail-ender can come and hit me. I asked that question because you played in the Irani game against RoI (Rest of India) which had a few top flight players Ah yeah, that match was not a good one for me. Around ten days before the game, I split my webbing and had around eight or nine stitches on my bowling hand. I started bowling in the 'nets' just one day before the match. Pankaj bhaiya was not playing in that match. I was carrying more responsibility as the lead bowler. Maybe they attacked me more in that game knowing that I was the only wicket taking bowler. Our bowling attack would be under pressure then. As you said, that game was a tough one for you. So how did you come back from that mentally? Before the match, I was feeling very confident. That match was a good platform for me to show the selectors that I could do well against good batsmen. But it did not go my way. That is a part of cricket. I thought that I was not good enough at that level and that I needed to work harder. I am doing that. Maybe next time when those people see me, they will know that I have become better. That is a very positive attitude. Do you have any fast bowling idols whom you look up to? My idol is Dale Steyn. He is the only bowler in the world who can bowl at 150 plus and still swing the ball. What do you think is the most important thing for a fast bowler. Is it just speed or is swing enough? What are your strengths? My strength is swing but I want to bowl fast. With a speed in 130s you can play for India but you cannot be a star. I want to be a role model for other bowlers. People don't think that 'I should be like Praveen Kumar'. They always aim to be someone like Dale Steyn. So that is my aim too. I want bowl 140+ consistently. How do you actually go about increasing your speed? Do the coaches modify your action? That is a good question actually. We do a lot of fitness exercises and work out in the gym to strengthen our upper body. The coaches will constantly monitor our action and the run up. I do it myself. I have a speed gun at home. I keep checking that to know about my progress. All these little things help a lot in increasing the speed. It was an absolute pleasure talking to you. Dont think you are an Indian cricketer. As an Indian cricketer, wherever you go, you will find media and you cant keep distance from them when you are in a commercial event of a company like Redbull.

u need good PR agents, some indian cricketers give loads of interviews and some u never hear them except when they get an award or something. how many times have u heard players like munaf, nehra and praveen give interviews, not many but then compare it to sreesanth or irfan. when nehra was injured for long time few years ago, i couldnt even find any articles on him online about his injury recovery

But this was a commercial event. You dont need PR for such events. Company invites media. and this is the case with most cricketers who give so many interviews. Likes of Nehra, Munaf, PK do not have many endorsements. Look at how many interviews, SRT and Sehwag give, no one comes close to them in this regard.
