Afghanistan beats Pakistan in Asian Games cricket

GUANGZHOU: Afghanistan knocked favourites Pakistan out of the cricket competition at the Asian Games, recording a shock 22-run victory in the semi-finals. Led by a brilliant all-round performance from Karim Khan Sadeq, Afghanistan restricted Pakistan to 103-7 from its 20 overs after posting a decent 125-8 on Thursday. Sadeq made a useful 19 runs as an opener and the off spinner later dented Pakistan run chase with twin strike in the 14th over. Sri Lanka will play Bangladesh in Thursday’s other semi-finals. :omg:

Beating 5th string pak side in tontee tontee doesn't mean they are anywhere near ready for test matches, just lost a series b4 to kenya. They gotta win like an ODI atleast against a test playing nation. Lets see how well they do in the Wcup.

Afghans have some good cricketers. Hamid Hasan is the star. Can bowl at a slippery pace. Was up to 90 mph in Asia cup. Zapoor Zardan, the left arm seamer looks promising. If he can shorten his run up and stop the Shoaib Akthar antics and learn to swing the cherry a bit will behandful with his pace. Shenwari is also a promising leggie. Batting lack experience but it's matter of time. Ireland and Afghanistan for test status!

Let's not rush them to test status soon - let the continue to do well in limited overs consistently, and then we'll talk.

They were unknowns when WC qualifying matches were held about 2 years back. Now they are the best among associates, and had been beating Ireland for fun. Has improved a lot during two years. All these while bombs are going around in Kabul. They looks like to have good players. (Bangladeshis are very laid back, But these fellas are very aggressive. May be genes IMO) And if their government can sort out the problems, expect a meteoritic rise from Afghans.

BAN was introduced in a wrong format IMO. They should've been only allowed home matches, and should have had many matches with A teams of test countries. That's how SL improved. There is no question that BAN was allowed it 5 years too early, but unlike BAN on admission, Afghanis and Irish are much stronger. The full Irish team is certainly test standard if you add Eoin Morgan, Hamish Marshall and Ed Joyce in to it.
