Is it a given that Dhoni's WL ratio should be ~6.50 as captain? Nobody appreciating our great captain?
I will bump this thread and sing his praises and I will join you in Dhoni worship after we win the S.A series,This is the biggest challenge in his captaincy career so far. Let us see how he will handle this.

W/L ratio is not a very fair indicator of the quality of a captain. It can be heavily influenced by the quality of the team as well. For example, if the same Dhoni is asked to lead the Bangladeshi team, I am sure that ratio will be nothing close to 6.5.

amen to that. Though he has already done enough to 'prove' his captaincy credentials imo

I wouldn't agree on that...A captains biggest challenge would be when he makes desicions which change the course of the game in his team's favour. So far,we have won matches and tournaments due to idividual brilliance of SRT,VVS,Zaheer,Sehwag. Dhoni's brightest point was the T20 final, after that his captaincy was nothing spectacular. The only thing that works in his favour is his aceptance among his peers and seniors as a leader. Apart from that I havent seen him make desicions to change course of the game ala Steve Waugh,Fleming,Cronje.Ponting had one of the best win/loss ratio but is not considered a great because he was expected to win as he was the captain of a superior team. The S.A tour and the WC will be his biggest challenges lets wait for that and then make a desicion. Azhar was a sucsesful captain too but never considered great bcoz of his team's overseas performance.Dada is rated higher bcoz he took us to wc finals in SA,started the trend of winning games abroad consistently abroad etc. Kapil and Sunny despite having moderate to poor captaincy records will be remembered for the way they marshalled the resources as underdogs and won the WC and World series respectively Dhoni still hasen't done anything ground breaking with his leadership skills so far imho .I keep saying this will be the biggest challenge bcoz 1st time in his captaincy career he is not going into a series as a clear favouraite.

Strongly disagree. Even individual brilliance can be inspired by good leadership. Some individuals can shine on their own and on given days can carry the whole team on their shoulders, but it's upto the captain to keep the forces cohesive and give the forces a general direction where their contributions together mean a lot more. I will give an example of the Australia series where Kumble captained two and drew both, Dhoni captained two and India looked like an entirely different team under him. Dhoni has the ability to inspire with his own attitude and temperament and can think out of the box sometimes. The results we have achieved under him are excellent. Though according to my own argument, that W/L ratio is not a fail indicator of his abilities of a captain, we cant entirely rob him of his fair share of credit.

I don't agree on the Kumble part as I think amidst all the contoversies and drama that was happening,he showed awesome maturity and calmness.I cannot say how Dhoni would have handled that bcoz he has clearly shown to be a cool customer but we need to admire Kumble in that series. We could have easily been demoralised with racist allegations and bad umpiring that we withstood.I think Dhoni in a way is carrying the good work of Saurav and too some extent RD and Anil because we needed the kumble transition phase bcoz of the circumstances under which RD quit.

Also to add to that I don't think good or bad leadership would affect the commitment of some one like Sachin,VVS,RD,Sehwag,Zaheer but yes he does handle the youngsters well. He is a good captain but he has a very long way to go before he is considered a great captain. It is like ponting building on the good work of Waugh and Taylor before him.

Dhoni has the Makings of the Most 'Successful Captain" . Greatest Captain of India too, But for that he needs to prove himself playing against the Top 3-4 Sides away from Home and Home. He has done Better at Home than the Past Captains, Now needs to be seen how he fares against them away. The Past Captains have proved themselves both Home and Away, and i do not agree with the fact who calls Dhoni Lucky, Just because without Luck you cant even score a Ton, Luck is needed everywhere. I'll take Luck anyday for the sake of Results.

DomainK is talking about the home series against Aus in 2008 which INdia won 2-0, not about series india played in Australia in 2007-2008...so he is right

dhoni is not great captain. he is a lucky captain only.
The number of tosses he loses says otherwise. Dhoni is not the best tactician. But its hard to explain his record. Take the 4 test series against Aus in which he became the captain for example. Kumble captained 2 and Dhoni captained 2, with pretty much the same players and yet we won both the game Dhoni captained as opposed to drawing the ones kumble captained. We have had the same or even better batting line up before but somehow we win a lot now. We used to praise Ganguly for winning, something Sachin didnt do as captain with more or less the same core team. Now its time to praise Dhoni. But having said that, the biggest challenge for him will be when the trio of Sachin, Dravid and Laxman are gone.

But you have to take into account that Kumble had SL and AUSSIE tour at the start of his captaincy, probably most difficult overseas tour

Has MSD even won a Match in Eng and AUS? Leave alone a series Draw. And the 'AUS' We are talking about here was the Worlds Best, Currently we are the Best and we can compare Performance in SA only to that n AUS.
