The all-rounder said that he is eager to get back to top flight cricket but he is taking one step at a time. http://cricketnext.in.com/videos/52067/irfan-pathan-eager-to-make-a-comeback.html Irfan Pathan is training at NCA and it will take him 4 more weeks to get fully fit. This means he will not be able to play in Ranji Trophy this season but he could feature in quater-fianls and so on if Baroda makes it there. He will play in Vijay Hazare Trophy starting in February but the World Cup will start on February 19 so it's unlikey that he will feature in the World Cup.

Good news for India. This pampered unfit player staying on the sidelines is the best thing that could have happened to India. No one will miss Irfan Pathan and his mediocre pace bowling on the sub-continental tracks. I do not understand the obsession with this guy.

Exactly my thought as well.

:-) we seem to disagree a lil here. I guess he hasn't been pampered for quite a while now. When he came on the scene he had the talent and skill but I feel Chappell's stint set him in the wrong direction and he lost himself without guidance. I want him back in the team...one last decent chance of a few guaranteed games...if he has learned then it can only be good for India. If he hasn't, then it's still worth the risk (I guess I have some bias towards pacer-big hitting a-rs, Kapsy was me hero growing up :--D)

ok that can wait till after the WC and that seems to be the case anyway.

Yeah...I am more interested in having him in the Test side but his game (when he is performing well) is that of an ideal a-r for India in any format. The bugger has come thru on key occasions even during his rough patch...WC Final MoM, CB Series Second Final, and that T20 in SL where the Pathans stole victory by sheer Gabbar Singh like force. Kirsten seems to have given him a clear message...he discussed possibilities as batting a-r but made it clear that he'll have to bowl closer to 140 than 120 and the guy looks determined...insha allah he'll make a comeback and become third behind Kapsy, and Mankad for India. Does anyone think Mithun has the potential to become a decent a-r for India...he seems pretty decent with the bat...can be a #8, and has the spirit...if he can touch 140 then it'll be wonderful.

Irfan should not be considered for the WC as he hasn't been tried in the recent months. We have a good pool of players to choose from who have been given adequate oppurtunities in recent months. Still he should be in the future scheme of things as there is no questioning his ability.

Let Pathan pick up the ball first and show how well he has recovered and show the progress over the span of at least one full domestic season. And if he is one of the top performer he surely has to be picked. Simple as that. And coming to Mithun he took 5 wickets today in Karnataka's win. This guy is real good. Goes hard game in and game out. I see a very good future for him. Regarding his batting he has shown a lot in that SL test. Didn't he. He seemed to have a decent technique for a No.9 bat and was even promoted ahead of a couple of tail enders. There surely is a potential there to be an all-rounder. However he needs to understand his first and foremost job is to be a good bowler and needs to solely focus on that and get better and everything else will fall in place.

Mind says 'Yeah' to both but heart pleads for Irfan to make the team for the WC

Don't really see whats wrong with him that selectors are ignoring him like this, he doesn't need to bowl 10 overs anyways, with part timers around. He will be batting at #7 slots, no super human is needed in that position, all you need to do is stick around when you need 85 balls 100 runs etc etc. I have seen him coming in that situation couple of times and doing his job as well. In case India is batting first, i highly doubt he will be needed to bat at all.

Can hardly blame the selectors for overlooking him.

I can't understand Srikanth's reluctance to allow him a decent run...he is basically given 1 match here 2 matches there in the last 3-3 yrs which is not helping. The only reason I can think of is Kirsten making it clear he wants to see him bowl at 140, not 120. Dhoni generally likes the guy and uses him well...so don't imagine there could be a problem from Dhoni's end.

That would be a tad unfair to the guys who are slogging it out for the very few spots left. And on top of it Irfan is no longer an irreplaceable member of the side. And he needs to prove his fitness and form. He's no Sach who can walk into the side straight away.

IP has got enough chances, he better stick to Ranji + IPL, India needs to find a better replacement instead of just going back to failures, lets not repeat 90s shall we
