Kapil Dev would also fall in that list IMO. The fact remains that he stretched his career for so long just to get to that record. It was a shame to see him bowl in the late 80's and early 90's but he kept on playing. And his refusal to bowl that final over in the Hero Cup Semi final against SA proved how much confidence he had on his bowling. The job was left to an 18 year old.

wowowowowow...hang on there. His refusal to bowl??????? If I remember correctly Azza had to wrest the ball out of his hand and give it to Sachin. First time I am hearing about this, and in fact first time I am hearing about Kapil backing away from any task asked of him at any point in his career.

There are millions of cricket fans who will give up everything just to play one international match leave alone picking up a wicket, catch or scoring a run!! And here we are, ridiculing people who have taken 300 test wickets as if taking those wickets is a joke and they got to the landmark due to the benevolence of the opposition batsmen!!

I don't think you are understanding the responses on this thread or the thread itself. I don't see "ridicule". I only see opinion about who is lesser in an already acknowledged class of greats (300+ wickets criterion)

What's up with a lot of Kapil bashing lately.A guy who single handedly carried the bowling attack for 15+ years,considered among the all time greats of the game,once the highest wicket taker in this game deserves more respect.India was a spin based attack but who was it's highest wicket taker for a long time,it was a fast bowler called Kapil Dev. Add to that he used tto bat at no.6 and bailed out the team countless times with his batting.

I did put Vettori up in the poll, but on hindsight he probably should not be there because for the last 4 seasons or so he has been playing as a genuine all rounder, averaging 40 with the bat. So kind of unfair on him, but on the other hand he does not have too many great bowling performances even from before that time.

Good thing you put up Vettori there, else Harabhajan would have won it unopposed, and this forum would have gone on a 3 day mourning.

Yes that's the truth...Sachin jumped in and said he wants to bowl. what happened was something like this: a. Last over equation dawned up all the players b. Automatically Kapil came forward and took the ball (the whole team until that point in time acted like it was a foregone conclusion who was supposed to bowl) c. Just then Sachin jumped up to say he will bowl...argued his case that he was a much slower bowler and whatever else. d. Until this point in time the ball is still in Kapil's hand. Then Azza, politely, took it from his hand and gave it to Sachin who had convinced all else e. Sachin proceeded to bowl and rest is History...

Seriously! I mean come on, is saneindian Manoj Prabhakar lurking around ICF or what? LOL! Nah don't mean to be dismissive. Criticism is one thing and extending false notions is quite another. Believe me, for a guy whose be all and end all while growing up was Kapil Dev, it is very difficult for me to accept that he basically played on for record-chasing during the last 4-5 seasons of his career. But I accept it as the truth...whom am I kidding. In spite of Imran being competition for my boy-hood mind, I hold Imran as the Greatest Test Cricketer ever. But this thing about Kapil shying away from a task asked of him, is well come as a shocker to me...and I guess most other ICF'ers.

Not down playing Imran but he always had a privilege to pick and choose his team,when he wanted to play and things like that. Kapil was more of the work horse who never missed a game,was never injured,gave everything all the time. Yes,I agree that Kapil played the last few seasons for the record but back then for cricket fans it was hard to imagine a team without Kapil just like how a lot of fans will be heartbroken the day Sachin retires. Also we did not have a replacement for him,we all know how many bowlers we triedd from the mid 90's to compelemnt Srinath.We still haven't found an allounder to replace him in the last 16 years since his retirement. Infact I remember druing 96 worldcup selectors still threw in the suggestion to bring back Kapil which he politely declined. It will be intersting to Compare Kapil's records with all the people we have tried to replace him with...

Agrya was promising but didn't do well with the bat. Irfan, I believed will rise up...and still do hope for it. Another hopeful is Mithun...u never know how things pan out.

O, I think I had that experience on 3 occasions...once in 88 when our team was being beaten like crazy by Patrick Patterson and that is when I finally recognized what Gavaskar meant to us (until then he was more of a tuku tuku player like Shastri in my kid mind). Then, of course 1994 with Kapil's retirement. But strangely did not miss him so much. Then in 2008 when Kumble and Dada left. Man this was the most difficult one...so based on this I can imagine how heartbroken I'll be when Sachin calls it a day. Maybe fans of my age and generation will be able to relate to what I am saying...I grew up along with Sachin's entry into cricket...my teen years were shaped by the pride of Sachin and Kumble. My initial professional life brimmed with confidence I carried from watching Dada, Rahul, and Lax. So when it finally dawned upon me that dada and Kumble will not be seen in a Test team again, it was an emotional experience. I was conducting a Training in a nice Hotel in Bangalore during the last 2 days of the Bangalore Test...and shared this thought with the participants and everyone felt the same. Just can't imagine an Indian team without Sachin...although do see our ODI and T20 teams without him but imagining a Test team without this fellow is quite a nightmare...lol. Question: how many of you still have the image of Sachin as depicted in Sahcin = GOD's avatar, when you hear or read about him, or watch him?

^^ I agree completely with you Nirvanam. Going back to how it all started I strongly disagree when people here say that Kapil was the worst of the lot in the 300 club.400 may be I will give it a thought but 300 hell no.

HS getting the most votes for the worst of the 300 club on an Indian cricket forum should really mean something given the fact we sometimes go so overboard rating the Indian players. I do not think HS is a great Test spinner by any stretch of an imagination in any case. The last 2 years have been a revelation ever since Kumble's retirement.

See I am not saying this as is. That was a big statement and that's not my own version. I heard it on a TV show and Boria Mazumdar pointed this thing out. And if you don't trust me you can check the video out as well. Kapil's hand was all strapped and he seemed reluctant to bowl that over.
