India's "refusal" to play Pakistan in 1990s

There is a story that Pakistan fans sometimes bring up that India did not play Pakistan in the 1990s because we were "afraid". We tend to accept it without question (just like the crap about Kumble's 10). Just now in the Bangladesh tour cancellation thread, Son of Pakistan was allowed to get away with the same argument. When exactly did India cancel a tour to Pakistan in the 1990s, apart from the 1993 Asia Cup ? Or is it all about India stopping the Sharjah visits. So Pakistan cancelled THREE tours to India in the 1990s because of they were afraid of Shiv Sena (a party that has, excluding Maharashtra, about two dozen members in the rest of India) and such. And then claim that India was afraid to play them.

Pakistan cancelled the 92 tour due to threats from Shiv Sena and the Babri demolition. Then the tour was rescheduled for 1993-94, but then again Pakistan pulled out citing the Mumbai bomb blasts and the riots in Mumbai. From then on the political relations worsened and India cancelled a pakistan tour in 1995 as there was no government clearance. Things got a little better around 1996-97 and we toured Pakistan for a short 3 match ODI series. Before that the ODI series in Toronto was also played. Between a 2 year period (from May 97 till the Kargill war), we played some 30-35 ODIs vs Pakistan including the Sahara Cup in Toronto, a number of series in Sharjah, and a tri series in India and BD. Early in 1999 (around the same time when our PM went there on a peace mission), there was the test series in India as well. But again post the Kargil War, poliitcal relations decided the sporting ties. The reason why no test series was played during this period was that both the teams had planned tours and did not have the time needed for a test series. Each of us played 27 tests in that 2 years period.

Nah we were definitely scared of the Ws back in the 90s. Yeah! Sometimes you feel politics should be kept outside from sport. But then you realize some things are larger than sport. India traditionally has been too lenient with Pakistan but when you see the Pakis destroying themselves it looks like our past politicians probably knew this would eventually happen and smartly did not engage with Pakistan actively. A game of cricket can suffer if we need to take a hard stance with Pakistan. Sometimes I feel some of the guys who support cricketing ties and cultural ties with Pakistan are either dreaming that pakis are capable of rationality when it comes to India, or, are demonstrating humanitarian virtues while ignoring affected people. People say we should not mingle sport and politics. Fair! But if the opposite takes advantage of this, and continues to keep raping your motherland, what do you do? Have these ultra-reconciliatory-cultural-ties-for-humanity-myth-believers ever bothered to ask themselves how the orphan whose parents were killed by a paki militant's bomb would feel when our country forgets those bombs and goes happy happy to play cricket with Pakistan? What about the widows, what about the mothers whose sons were killed...anyone bothered to ask their opinion of playing cricket with Pakistan. Someone comes and rapes your cousin, how do you think your cousin would feel if you knew it but still went and played cricket, hockey with that person? What great humanitarian virtue is that? If Pakis want "aman" with India then they should ensure to silence their terrorists. Yes terror activities are done by a minority of people in Pak but when minority behaves like a pack of wild dogs for decades then the majority must teach them better. Without Paki people's support terrorism in Pak could not have flourished. Peace has to be the final solution always. But sometimes peace can only be earned with ruthless policies. We don't need to use any violence just policies. Ignore them and basically wipe them off from any economic engagement and just forget they exist. Our reaction is what they want...terrorists need to see our distress after bombings as motivation for further bombing. We screw them this way...no engagement with Pak...no Paki cultural figures come here, no Paki actors come here, no Paki musicians come here, no Paki cricketers or sportsmen or commentators, throw Wasim out of KKR. When we do this then those Pakis who have been shunned will fight their own military. That is the best way.
