Talent remains a word that is thrown around without too much thought, and history pages are full of names that never did justice to their potential. Many amongst them simply got lost in the maze created by the hype around their talent. Rohit Sharma, though, is determined to avoid getting entangled in that treacherous maze. Hailed as one of the most promising young Indian batsmen, he has had a roller coaster ride in international cricket so far. In 54 one-day internationals he averages a touch below 29 and in 19 Twenty20 games he has an average of 33.50. With the 2011 World Cup 110 days away, the 23-year-old finds himself in a precarious situation with regard to making it to the final 15 for the marquee event. His international career is just three-and-a-half-year-old, but some controllable and some uncontrollable factors are threatening to put a spanner in his progress. And Sharma realises that the only thing that matters is runs. He told Mumbai Mirror, “Talent is nothing. I can’t stop people from saying that I am talented. That’s their view. In cricket, talent gets you nowhere, it is the runs and the wickets that matter. That’s how it has been for ages and that’s how it is going to be. “The fact remains that I need runs and runs and more runs. Only runs will keep me in contention for a regular spot in the Indian team.†Since January 1 this year, Sharma has played 13 ODI games and has got 460 runs with two tons. This eye on the future can take the focus from the present and put that extra bit of pressure. Sharma is determined not to let that happen. “When I made my first class debut in 2007, no one knew me. There were no expectations and I just enjoyed the game. There was no pressure on me. I am approaching the new season in the same manner. I will enjoy the game and let God take care of the rest.†Beside his on-field battles, Sharma also had to live with jibes about his fitness and attitude. He disagrees with the perception that he fares poor on both accounts. “If people say that I have not been a consistent performer, I will agree. But how can people judge my fitness and attitude by seeing me on TV. “My job is not to look at people’s perceptions; all I am concerned about is my game.†Luck too hasn’t been on Sharma’s side. He was slated to make his Test debut last year against South Africa but twisted his ankle minutes before the game. He hasn’t been picked since while Suresh Raina and Cheteshwar Pujara wore their Test caps. Sharma says, “I was unlucky in Nagpur. And what happened after that is not in my control. Needs a good start to the domestic season. And will get more chances during the ODIs with the leading players heading to SA. Has to grab those chances and do well. At least he has realised that he hasnt made much of the chances he has been given. Till a few months ago it was, I have been doing well, there is nothing wrong with my batting..

The Mumbaikar made his mark in the 2006 under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka and soon made his ODI debut against Ireland at Belfast in 2007. He came very close to getting his Test cap early this year when he was brought in as cover for injured Rahul Dravid for the first Test against South Africa at Nagpur. But on the morning of the match he got hurt and had to miss it. From then on it has been a struggle get into the national squad. He kept going thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is considered an all-rounder after his hat-trick for the Deccan Chargers in the 2009 edition. The Nagpur-born batsman is now roughing it out on the domestic circuit, and doing what he knows best -- scoring big runs. This season he already has an unbeaten double century against Bengal and last week he charmed the capital's cricketing fraternity with a fluent 148 against Delhi, to deny the hosts a Ranji Trophy knockout berth. The turn-around started late last year when he proved that he can compile big scores by hitting a triple century against Saurashtra. 'This has been a good Ranji season for me. I am back among the runs in a big way and I am happy with my batting,' said Rohit. He began the year scoring his maiden ODI century against Zimbabwe in a tri-series in Bulawayo in May and followed it up with another one in the next match against Sri Lanka, an unbeaten 101, before form eluded him. The rise of Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Yusuf Pathan has made the chances of a comeback tougher, but Rohit is unfazed. 'I can't be bothered about who is doing well. My focus should be on doing my job well and scoring runs. The fact that there are so many contenders for a place in the team augurs well for Indian cricket. The rivalry among us is healthy. I am happy for Virat. On the field we may be competitors but off it we get along well,' he said. Many blame the easy money from Indian Premier League for the casual approach of youngsters and their diminishing hunger for runs. Rohit disagrees. 'I don't think that it could be a reason for not performing. Everyone knows that when you represent India in cricket, there will be money and fame coming your way. I definitely like to do well in the Twenty20 cricket but at the same time I am determined to do well in all three formats of the game. 'I also want to play Test cricket for India. I am growing as a cricketer and I would like to do well in the longer format of the game. I have performed well in first class cricket and I hope to carry it into the Tests, if given a chance.' His inclusion in the preliminary 30-man World Cup squad has been a reprieve but Rohit insists his focus as of now is working on his game. 'I am not looking at the World Cup, whether I am selected or not. My focus is on improving myself and scoring runs. As of now my priority is Mumbai. We are in the (Ranji) quarterfinals and I hope to do well in the remaining games,' he said.

Raina will be dropped from the squad and considering Sharmas form in domestic first class record he looks next in line. If we can give raina 6 test matches I don't see why can't do the same for Rohit.
