An observation on Sachin about yesterday's innings

Guys I am not trying to dissect Sachin's batting here. But yesterday this is one thing that I genuinely felt. When he came out to bat he was in a great attacking mode. He was showing positive intent and the 2 shots that he played to Morkel over the slips were heavenly. But as soon as Smith intorduced a 3rd man I felt Sachin got a bit perplexed. The very next ball he looked to pull which was again great to see but not exactly a %age shot given the conditions. Then next ball he poked at a delivery outside off stump and got beaten and finally last ball before lunch he survived a tight LBW shout. After lunch he got out to a very rash shot. I felt that after the 3rd man was placed he was not able to chalk out a plan B. I know I have touched a contentious issue here but felt like sharing it here..

I think given the nature of the pitch and the situation it needed a patient knock from him. Playing high percentage shots, but he did not.

The shot he played to get out was very rash. More Sehwag-ish than SRT.

Meh. This is hardly the first time SRT's faced a field change that limited the sort of shots he could play. He just played an uncharacteristically rash shot yesterday, that's all. Happens to the best of 'em.

No mate. Not at all. But anyone can get unsettled once their plan "A" is suddenly shunned. I am not criticising him man. Just that sometimes these kind of things can happen to anyone. On top of it it was something that I felt. You need not agree to it :--D

Personally if you ask me he is getting over-ambitious. Given the kind of form he is in he is perfectly capable of playing a long innings. He wasted 2 opportunities in this test. Granted. 2nd innings the ball was a good one. First innings. That was a WTF shot.

This is the best reason I think. I have noticed ever since he got the entire Mumbai team to stick into Warne in 98' date=' he has been very consciously [i']targeting bowlers. This is one aspect of his game which goes quite unnoticed but is almost as essential to his virtuoso quality as the thread in a necklace of beads. Sometimes they have come off and sometimes they haven't. His second attempt at Warne, which was the first attempt in a Test (the first was Mumbai v.s Aus in that series), was a similar tactic and he was caught at slip for 4...second ball I think. I remember his deliberate attacking of McGrath on a mine of a pitch at Nairobi (Yuvi-Zak debut announcement game). The unsuccessful attempts have been against Panesar, Cameroon White, Kasprowicz, and of course Steyn. Its more noticeable in the ODI's...he usually goes after the opposition's best bowler up front to demolish the opposition's confidence. But in Tests he normally pays respect to them and goes after the weaker links. The way he handled Lee's challenge in the 2007-08 series is a case in point.
