What a probable poor end to Ricky Ponting's test career. Fate is cruelly even-ing up with Punter for his indiscretions but he's gotta be a man and take it on his chin, like he mostly has and move on to the next challenge. I've always disliked Ponting the captain, but Ricky has been one of the fiercest opponent when batting and leading the Australian team. Cheers to him on that. I actually feel bad to see him probably say "buh-bye" to cricket in this manner.

I still think he will come back. He will be in the team for the one dayers and if he has a big WC I'd expect him to be in the side for the tests for our next test match. And it's actually a fact that he's injured, so don't know why everyone is going on about how his been dropped.

And to be honest it will be a really stupid decision to change a captain a few days before the World Cup unless he is completely ruled out due to injury.

Can be end of captaincy. But he will come back as a batsman. I dont think CSA will consider this as the end of him as a batsman. He still has a year or two left and he will be back without the captaincy thingy.

It all depends on how Australia do in the World Cup, assuming he still wants to play on. If they do well enough, I expect him to be back as a player for sure, if not captain for the Sri Lanka tests. He will probably call it quits from ODIs after the World Cup.

i would be surprised if that happens, i have never seen an aussie captain step down and return as a player

He’s obviously been dropped. There was absolutely no talk of any finger injury keeping him out of the final test in Sydney, right after the MCG debacle. In all the post-match interviews/press conferences, Ponting was still having a part defiant/part exasperated tone and all the talk was about leveling the series at the SCG. If the injury to his finger was as serious as it is made out to be, surely he would have at least made a mention of it in the post-MCG situation and he didn’t. The Aussie selectors obviously have had enough of this current Aussie team and were only too eager to ring in the changes. This finger-inury excuse is a smoke-screen to make Ponting’s exit look diginified.
