hari504504 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 @ Gambhir and Dravid..should be feeling light as a humming bird these two,,,coming so high up the batting order and no burden of expectation from fans..
Jersey #10 Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 21:2 in favor of Sachin Where are all the LAX devotees? where is the trust in him to score big under "pressure cooker" situation? I guess no one expects anything from Laxman as everyone knows that if they had to bet on someone it would no other than the Sachin. So much expectations from the fans as well as the hatters. What was the poalee ratio in the other thread? 60:8 or something in favor of Lax? ...that poll was a BIG FAT JOKE

goose Posted December 31, 2010 Author Posted December 31, 2010 Do you guys not understand OP's POV ? When was this thread or poll about a comparison between Indian batsmen ? I created this anonymous poll precisely to illustrate the point regarding Laxman, Tendulkar and pressure.
yoda Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 21:2 in favor of Sachin Where are all the LAX devotees? where is the trust in him to score big under "pressure cooker" situation? LOL! :giggle: since they are both responded by similar people, take both and conclude the following: 1. Fans expect Tendulkar to perform better 2. Laxman delivers better under pressure See now we are all happy. :--D
The Outsider Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 I don't get it - you needed a poll to find out that the greatest public expectations for run scoring is from arguably the greatest batsman of the last 20 years? What this has got to do with the pressure created during match situations, I don't know.
hari504504 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 I don't get it - you needed a poll to find out that the greatest public expectations for run scoring is from arguably the greatest batsman of the last 20 years? What this has got to do with the pressure created during match situations, I don't know. Hit the nail right on the head there.. :two_thumbs_up: I don't think a cricketer feels the pressure from supporters any more than pressure created during a match situation (infact the latter trumps the former by some margin) . Equating the two is a bad bad fallacy.
Raghav_12 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Don't you think the pressure has been reduced enormously thanks to the 2nd test win? Also, pressure builds during a test depending on wickets on hand, target, pitch condition, charging bowlers, etc. Pressure is infinite times more when you are down 0-1 on a crazy ass bowlers paradise than when you are 1-1 on a batting friendly one. That said, even if you had this poll before the 2nd test, the results would probably have been the same. Reason being the fans have a higher expectation of Sachin than others. Who actually does well under pressure isn't necessarily same as what fans think before a match as to how the players will perform. No, It's not like that. Going in second test at 0-1, you have nothing to loose as anyway you are getting defeated in series. It is a situation where you can afford to take more risk. But going in decider at 1-1 is definitely more pressure situation. A lot more at stake in that situation. Isn't fifth set is considered test of nerves in tennis matches? All we remember from 2008 Wimbledon final is fifth set btw Nadal and Federer. If you compare 0-1 situation, where we were fighting for survival, it is same as WC 03 initial rounds where we were fighting to stay afloat in tournament. At that time Sachin performed and helped India to reach final. Final was more like going into decider at 1-1. Going by your logic Sachin performed best when pressure was more. Isn't it? And batting/bowling/pitch conditions has nothing to do with pressure. Isn't there any pressure in high scoring matches? If so there is no pressure in ODI's having scores of 300 or more. Anyways at this point of time nobody knows, how many runs Sachin or Laxman will score. I am fine anyone scoring runs as long as India wins.
Raghav_12 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Some posters making comment that no.4 can be expected to make highest score but no 5 can not be. It is a kind of joke. Is no 4 and no 5 miles apart? And in any case nowadays difference btw no 4 and no 5 is Dravid's wicket. So for practically purposes, looking at Dravid's form, it becomes same.
Anakin Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 I don't get it - you needed a poll to find out that the greatest public expectations for run scoring is from arguably the greatest batsman of the last 20 years? What this has got to do with the pressure created during match situations, I don't know. Nothing, but it does show another aspect. While the expectation on player1 is outstanding any failure will be unacceptable and the opposite is true for most players. Thus player1 will be judged by his failure against success of any and every other player. I suppose that's the whole point of this thread. BTW, "pressure" is as subjective as it can get, the issue of pressure is pretty much moot.
zen Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 This poll suggests that there is a lot of pressure on Sehwag too. He must also be playing under more hypothetical pressure than some of the others :giggle: .... Conversely, since Laxman has few votes, he is automatically not under much pressure :hehe: If we were to have a poll for the WI team w/ Lara in it, i guess it was also measure the same level of pressure as this poll tries to suggest! BTW, I have voted for Sehwag because I guess it is time for him to play one of his specials :yay: The voting also depends up on the how folks expect the pitch to be. If it is not going to test the batsmen as much as the last two tests, then you would vote expecting the top 4 to put you in a good position
Anakin Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 BTW, another form of pressure was shown when Punter's avg dropped by half during and after McWarne era. And by contrast SRT had to play with worse team than Punter for almost all his career, same for BCL for a big part of his career as well. @Rett, it has been quite obvious to me that your understanding of most things are pretty child-like. So, my suggestion would be trying to understand the point, not try smilies and showing off your lack of basic understanding.
zen Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 This poll (for what it is trying to imply) is probably another slap on Sachin by his fanatic fans as if they are trying to suggest that Sachin is playing under pressure of expectations then they are also suggesting that even after 2 decades of playing cricket, the little master has NOT adjusted to such kind of expectations! :P
The Outsider Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Nothing, but it does show another aspect. Thus player1 will be judged by his failure against success of any and every other player. I suppose that's the whole point of this thread. BTW, "pressure" is as subjective as it can get, the issue of pressure is pretty much moot. Unacceptable by whom? By the public? How much of an impact does the public view have on the career of a player - the actual people making decisions on their careers are the selectors. And selectors are more likely to drop Laxman after 10 failures than Tendulkar. So, even in that respect the pressure on Laxman to perform is greater because his career has a shorter rope of failure than Tendulkar. However, I do agree that pressure is subjective. But, I would not hesitate to say that Laxman is a better player than Tendulkar in seemingly lost causes, shepherding the tail, and as a finisher.
zen Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 BTW' date='[b'] another form of pressure was shown when Punter's avg dropped by half during and after McWarne era. So, my suggestion would be trying to understand the point, not try smilies and showing off your lack of basic understanding. If playing with a worse team than Ponting gives pressure then do you mean all the other batsmen in team Ind like Dravid, VVS, Sehwag and Ganguly, played under different kind of pressure or count for nothing! :hysterical: .... I guess Kumble and Srinath count for nothing too I won't even bother to classify you and recommend what you should do :--D
hari504504 Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Dravid is still completely 'pressure-less'..must be a wonderful feeling :haha:
zen Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 Public view finds its way to the selectors and management thru media. in this day and age they cant chose to live in their own little world. And as far as the match itself is concerned if you go to the stadium you will find the enormous difference in the reactions when Baasu starts batting. The stadium kinda empties once he gets out. If thats not pressure I dont know what is pressure. Are you suggesting that a top batsmen like Tendulkar, who has been playing cricket for 2 decades cannot handle such pressure? I guess, he is more likely to feel pressured if people booed him like they did in Mumbai than those cheering for him to do well. Some can ever argue that such support gives confidence in ones ability too, which is why people talk about home crowd! This can be argued either ways :winky:
