What he said is very interesting. The distinction is more linguistic than geographic. All those who speak Indo-Aryan / Indo-European languages are North Indians. Those who speak Dravidian languages are South Indians. There can be cases, where the speakers of an Indo-Aryan language may reside in what we geographically call South India. For eg, Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Karnataka, parts of Goa and Northern Kerala. So, as per this definition, these guys are North Indians. Similarly, speakers of Baluchi ( a Dravidian/ Dardic language) are South Indians, though geographically most of them who migrated to India post the partition can be found in Delhi.

So Sri Lankans aren't northies or southies :P I presume you mean Sinhalese. If Sri Lanka was a part of India, by the aforementioned definition, the SInhalese would be North Indian. Tamil Sri Lankans aren't, even though they are in Northern Sri Lanka and the Sinhalese are in Southern Sri Lanka.
