'Only Ponting can beat Tendulkar's record'

This has been discussed umpteen number of times on forum. Current situation is as pressure situation as it could be. A series is on very much on line and India was reduced to 28/2 by the time Sachin came to bat.
How is the series on the line when we are just at 1st innings with guys like Laxman still to come as opposed to being already down 0-1 and at 56-4 in 2nd innings with just a 1 game debutant and Dhoni to come? Do you honestly not see the difference between the two scenarios?

Quite obviously, it is a pressure situation and if Tendulkar does manage to score a big hundred to take India to 450, from where it will be almost impossible to lose the match it will go down as one of the best innings of his career. And he is quite capable of doing it - you don't become the best in business if you can't handle pressure. That also does not mean that no one handle it better either.

About win and loss of debates' date=' probably you should look at signatures of my posts :winky:[/quote'] Yea, I noticed that. One a side note - in fact thats what used to happen in old days ( really old days, like times of kings and kingdoms), when kings would invite intellects from various fields and then let them argue and then declare the winner. And winner's views used to be documented as "facts" or "knowledge" or "wisdom".

How do you know that the rest of the batsmen will win you the game ?
In other words - since it is a known fact that certain batsmen excel only in pressure situations (more often than not), then it is wise for others to facilitate creating such pressure situations - conducive for the "pressure experts" - so just throw the wicket away man, esp when it matters most - like winning/defending series.

So according to you pressure at 0-0 is same as the pressure at 100-9 cause no one knows anything. :giggle: Let me help here: 1. Pressure increases with fall of wickets (close but still applicable here, 2nd test > 3rd) 2. Pressure increases as the game progresses and things start to get "tighter" (2nd test >>> 3rd) 3. Pressure increases when the pitch is practically unplayable (2nd test >>>> 3rd) 4. Pressure increases when quality of opponent goes up (obv NA this series between matches, before one of you start getting excited :winky:) 5. Pressure increases when you have to bat with lesser batsmen/tail (2nd test >>> 3rd) Feel free to add your own criteria and evaluate different match situations. Sometimes I feel that we argue about things which are probably obvious even to 2 year olds. :nervous:

do you not see the tripe you're posting? If he failed there would be certain people posting about how he choked when he was needed by the team, if he scores its a no-pressure situation

^ Exactly, pressure specialists have this circular reasoning, if Sachin fails (and other top order) fails that only constitutes as pressure situation - So to be able to fall in league of pressure specialists 0 either he has to play lower down the order for rest of the career. Or need to bat twice in an innings.

tripe is confusing what people post about his choking and what pressure situation is and the difference between the two tests.

How much lower down the order does VVS play when compared to Sachin?

I see the difference and I would say in the kind of situation that you mentioned in your post I'll prefer Laxman over Sachin. But problem is with this unidimensional definition of "pressure innings" which says pressure is felt only when you are down and out from the game. Different situation have different kind of pressure. Going by your definition Sehwag or Gambhir would never play a pressure innings.

Yes, they keep coming with these Catch-22 situations/arguments.

It is a pressure situation out there. India was in pressure when 'Wag and 'Vid got out. To blunt the RSA attack and take to this stage is a huge effort.

There is a reason why Laxman comes one after Sachin, and there is a reason - why Sachin and Dravid having scored tonnes of runs (coming before Laxman) - It is Laxman who finds himself batting with the tail. Still can not understand? And Laxman being significantly better than Dravid, Sehwa, Sachin, Gambo - at handling pressure is definitely no that reason.

28-2, oh God, what an unique pressure situation! We hardly get to see such scenario in tests, it must be terrifying! Poor GG, hardly anyone is giving him the credit for taking on the pressure of SA opening bowlers, watching 2 wkts fall by, and then having to do all the hardwork. I guess the pressure only comes in for the guy coming in at the fall of 2 wkts :P
