How do cheergirls help cricket, Parliamentary standing committee asks BCCI

NEW DELHI: How do cheergirls promote the cause of cricket? Why are players auctioned like "gladiators" in IPL system of cricket? These were some of the questions that members of the Parliamentary standing committee on finance posed to top BCCI officials, including its president Shashank Manohar, secretary N Srinivasan and IPL commissioner Chirayu Amin during a hearing on financial transactions related to the conduct of IPL. While the BCCI top brass claimed that IPL would help the cause of cricket and attract more talent, it was at loss to explain the role of cheergirls, sources said. It is learnt that the BCCI officials put the onus of introducing the concept on sacked IPL chief Lalit Modi. Some of the members of the committee, headed by BJP MP Yashwant Sinha, also questioned the concept of auctioning the players like "gladiators". They said it reminded them of the Roman empire when men were sold to bidders on the basis of their physical strength. Manohar, Srinivasan and Amin were quizzed by the MPs for about two-and-a-half hours about the alleged FEMA violations. The BCCI was asked about the funding pattern of the highly popular IPL and the methods adopted for payment to foreign and Indian players. The committee also sought details of the expenses incurred on the conduct of the second edition of the Twenty20 tournament in South Africa in 2009. The IPL was held in the African nation in 2009 due to a clash of dates with the general elections in India.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/news/How-do-cheer-girls-help-cricket-BCCI-asked/iplarticleshow/7276008.cms No offense but how does it anyways matter to any politicians as to why there are or why should there be cheergirls. Politicians are the worst people in India and I find it funny that they are questioning why cheergirls are there and why players are auctioned. I would just say. Go get a life politicians. :winky:

How does a statue of a politician help people?
Good point. :) I would not even go to the extent of saying statue of a politician. I would question that how does any politician help people. Half if not more of the problems in the nation are created by the politicians and I dont know how do they help the nation. :winky:

You don't have to go out of the way and support anything that is remotely related to IPL. First of all, cheerleading concept has never been a part of cricket or India, so if we were to take them out of the equation you won't be losing any spectators. Second, the way cameramen pan into the cheerleaders it seems like you're in a bloody strip joint sans the poles. As prof mentioned, it's pure vulgarity and should be eradicated unless IPL agrees to move out of the prime time slot (answer to this we know).

By your standards, that telecast should also be banned in India.. If the issue is of overfocussing on Cheerleaders then the Brodcasting Company which is telecasting the IPL, has to be told to do in a different way. Removing Cheer Leaders is not a solution..That'll be the religious fanatics way of doing the things in a progressive democratic like India..

Give me one reason why I should be looking at chics who'd dance for anything without having an iota of knowledge to what their cheering for ? If IPL is about promoting cricket, then cheerleading should have no place in IPL but if IPL is only about the tamasha that it has offered for the past 3 years then I'd also suggest them of installing poles and entertain its viewers. What about the telecast of Ind-SA series ? Are you talking about the bikini girls on RSA grounds ? If you're equating cheerleading concept to these girls, then god help you.

IPL was/is never about promoting cricket. Promoting cricket where? India already has cricket crazy people. It's entertainment cricket. People go and watch it in the evening to have fun just like they go and watch a raunchy Item Number.. (Munni Badnaam Hui.. darling Tere Liye & Sheila Ki Jawani..Ever wondered if those song are for "promoting Bollywood movies"?) Cheerleading has now become a part of Tamasha cricket, which is T20. Don't blame IPL. You will see Cheerleader in most of the T20 matches all over the World. Since you hate IPL, you are targetting it. If you are so concened about Cheerleaders and their exposures then show similar or greater concernes about various item numbers dished out by Bollywood in every movies, saucy TV adverts, XXX MMS criculating in various schools, Reality shows like Bigg Brother etc.. Public likes the IPL show. Who are you to stop them getting what they want? If they want to get spoiled, they'' watch few MMS, few raunchy item numbers and then do whatever they want.. In the recent T20 match between South Africa & India, there were many cheer leaders dancing.. So what's your point?

I don't know where you are currently living, but you seem to me that you're either ignoring or are not aware of the West-India cultural gap. Our society is still very conservative irrespective of whatever we might think - even majority of the urban population is conservative. The concept of youth being exposed to such vulgarity will probably have negative consequences in the near future. I know a lot of guys who support cricket and went to see DD matches at Kotla but were they seemed to be overwhelmed by cheerleaders. It changes the perception of the society (that everyone knows). Secondly, someone needs to keep BCCI in check - so I don't really oppose govt questioning :P

You are literally comparing IPL to some cheap porno, B-grade movies. Are you actually backing IPL or knocking it down ? Gosh! And I don't need to take your word about what IPL is about. You're fuhrer himself stated that IPL is all about "unearthing" the unlucky ones who don't get to show off their skills to the masses and IPL will be means of doing the exact. So are you telling me Mr. Modi lied to us ? (You don't say :nervous:).

It does matter. BCCI an an organization was formed ' to spread cricket in India'. It wasn't formed as a pvt.ltd company with the sole purpose of making profits. The tax rebates for companies like the BCCI are tremendous. The taxation for a BCCI and say a Reliance Industries is very different, though both actually are just profit minded enterprises. In an ideal world, BCCI should function as a pvt. ltd, and pay their taxes entirely. But that is not happening. So, once the BCCI became a cash cow ( with the advent of costly television rights in the mid 90s) the government had to find a way to get their 'rightful' cut. This is generally in the form of bribes to various government officials. The arm twisting of BCCI on the issue of cheer girls is just one of their many ways to extract a bribe. And its the government who issues visas to the foreign cheerleaders. Its their right to ask.

Wrong. The tax department withdrew the tax exemption status granted to BCCI about a year ago. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/BCCI-must-pay-Rs-684-cr-tax-Sources/articleshow/6108545.cms http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/story/449774.html
The income tax department also said there was "no element of charity" in the affairs of the BCCI. "Cricket is only incidental to its scheme of things," it said in a statement.

Thank you. I wasn't aware of these developments. If this is true for the 2011-2012 tax year, then the BCCI should ensure that the IPL functions like a private limited. And be off with the political interference.
