vvvslaxman Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Sachin is dead cert to open the innings. Most likely it would be Viru that opens the innings with him. That will push Gauti down to no.3 So Kohli will lose his usual spot. You think he should push Yuvi down to play at no.4 ? Sachin/Sehwag Gauti Kohli Yuvraj Raina Dhoni That is pretty much our line up at this point. That leaves all the dashers down the order.

The Outsider Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 If Yuvraj is not able to get into form, I would push him down to 7 where he does not have the pressure of building an innings. That will also move Dhoni up the order where he will have more time. He doesn't seem to be the player who can start hitting from ball 1 anymore. Tendulkar Sehwag Gambhir Kohli Dhoni Raina Yuvraj
cowboysfan Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Yuvi will be a big failure at 7,he is not a kind of player who can star biffing the ball from the get go.He hangs around and then goes for the big shots once he gets his eye in.
Ram Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 No way we're playing 7 specialist batsmen. Thats just a sheer waste of batting talent. At least to start the WC, it will be Sachin+Viru at the top, Gambhir at no.3, Yuvraj at 4, MSD at 5, Raina at 6 and Yusuf at 7. Before the NZ series, there were two contentious issues - The no.3 and no.7 spots. But rather providentially, Gambhir re-discovered his touch with those 2 100s and Yusuf played that superb knock in the final ODI. That has given the team management/selectors a lucky escape route. Else, they would have been tearing their hair off, confused as to who to play in those positions. And that is so harsh on Kohli, who, for all practical purposes, has been our best ODI bat since the B’desh series early last year. But who can you drop for him? Before the NZ series, maybe, just maybe, Gautam’s spot in the line-up was in trouble, but he helped ease some of the concerns with those back-to-back 100s. Given this, the only way to accommodate Kohli is to play 7 specialist batsmen and that isn’t going to happen because that will end-up short-changing our spin options.
vvvslaxman Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 Yuvraj, Raina, VIru are going to fill the 5th bowling quota. Anyway you look at it Yusuf Pathan is not a specialist spinner either.
Sachin=GOD Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Goddy Sehwag Gambhir Yuvraj Kohli Raina Dhoni and if Yusuf has to be in the team then Kohli will have to sit out.
The Outsider Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 How is Yusuf anymore of an all rounder than Yuvraj? If Kohli has a good series in South Africa, not only would they find it impossible to drop him, but it would be stupid to drop him as well.
spectre Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Yep, Yuvi should bat @ No.4, settle down and take on the batting powerplays anywere between30-40 overs. He is the most dangerous there. And if he stays after 40 overs, god save the opposition. With Raina playing alongside him, it will be double damage Yuvi will be a big failure at 7' date='he is not a kind of player who can star biffing the ball from the get go.He hangs around and then goes for the big shots once he gets his eye in.[/quote']
Ram Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Yuvraj' date=' Raina, VIru are going to fill the 5th bowling quota. Anyway you look at it Yusuf Pathan is not a specialist spinner either.[/quote'] Nope, not true. If you look at the ODIs we have played at home in the last 2 years, we have NEVER gone in with Yuvraj+Raina+Sehwag as the back-up spinner slot. It has either been Jadeja or Yusuf. Jadeja was inexplicably persisted with, in the hope that someday, his non-existent batting talents will somehow bubble to the surface. Once the team realized that he’s more a reasonable 2nd spinner who can field well, rather than an all-rounder, they got rid of him pronto. Yusuf’s case is more depressing, because we all KNOW he can destroy attacks. But his temperament in pressure situations and technique against quick, short-pitched bowling have always been a suspect. But he must have injected some hope into the blood-stream with that 100 against the Kiwis. The Indian think tank understands the value of a credible 2nd spinner option and that’s precisely the reason why they kept persisting with Jadeja. I am willing to bet a $100 bucks and say and fitness permitting, we’re almost 100% certain to play the line-up I listed.
spectre Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Sachin Sehwag Gambhir Yuvraj Raina Dhoni Yusuf ( can be slotted anywhere up the order depending on the state of the game) Kohli unfortunately has to miss out or take Gambhir's slot You need the game changer in Yusuf, he would be very handy in Indian wickets and his darts are very useful as well
Ram Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 How is Yusuf anymore of an all rounder than Yuvraj? If Kohli has a good series in South Africa, not only would they find it impossible to drop him, but it would be stupid to drop him as well. You’re looking from a bowling perspective, but the team is excited and likes what he brings to the table, from a batting standpoint , in subcontinental conditions. And its hard not to agree with them. I mean, this guy can score 130 off 80 balls in his day. And given the WC will be played in India where most bowling attacks will have a higher spin focus than usual, it is close to impossible to ignore his destructive talents against spin. Yes, it is unfair that Kohli will be dropped, but that is almost 100% certain to happen.
Ram Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 And here’s two more reasons why Yusuf is almost a dead certainty to figure in the Indian batting line-up come the WC; No1, Change of Approach - During the 100 he scored against NZ, he showed something we had rarely ever glimpsed before – Restraint during the intial part of the innings. When he came into bat, we were 4-5 wickets down, the required RR was already over six and we still needed 180+ runs. The Yusuf that we knew before would have come in and blazed with gay abandon, but he didn’t. If my memory serves right, he didn’t score a single boundary in his 15-20 balls. More importantly, he did not even attempt a boundary, which is more revealing. It was only after the rain-break, that he cut loose against Vettori. So its obvious that he has worked on the mental side of his game. The team management would have noticed that change. No.2, The 100 against NZ/ the IPL auction – This might sound a little obtuse, but Yusuf selling for more than $2 mn in the auction would have come as the big shot in the arm for him. Even though he has been in and out of the team, the fact that he was still one of the most expensive buys in the auction has once again reiterated how the popular Indian opinion still considers him one of the destructive batsmen in our home conditions. If I were Yusuf, its impossible to not look at that and feel encouraged. And Yusuf is a 100% confidence player. He can rise and fall depending on how good he feels about himself, because in our home conditions, his the deficiencies in his technique are pretty much marginalized .So how he performs will boil down to how confident he is, at that moment. And right now, he must be feeling pretty good about himself, not just because of the IPL auction, but especially after that 100 against NZ. And that showed in the post-match presentation after that match. Yusuf is generally pretty reserved in those circumstances. He generally thanks the god above and splutters out a few words here and there. But after that innings, he specifically spoke about how he hoped that innings will spark a turnaround in his career and revive it. So he was obviously looking far ahead, than just basking on the glory of the moment.
vaibhav_delhi Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Yusuf will likely fail against express pace, and so i wont play him against the aussies. He wudnt be able enough against tait, lee, johnson.

Yes, it is unfair that Kohli will be dropped, but that is almost 100% certain to happen. But Kohli is more consistent. Also Kohli has already proved that he can organize big chases very well without any pressure. There is a good chance Yusuf can be bounced out by decent teams. But Kohli is a much more organized batsman.
The Outsider Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 LOL! He scored a hundred against a side which was whitewashed by Bangladesh and is now being hailed as the cure to all of India's lower order batting problems. The ICF hype machinery is off the charts! :hysterical:
Bumblebee Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Goddy Viru Gauti Yuvi Raina Yusuf Dhoni Bhajji Praveen Zak Nehra

You try to find out how many times in the last 2 years last time we played 7 specialist batsmen and you will automatically know the answer for your question. You’re talking from a standpoint of what you think is the righ think to do. I am talking from a standpoint of what I’ve SEEN the Indian team do. Once again, at least to begin the WC, Kohli will is almost certain to miss out from the line-up. Or he could possibly figure in the line-up against one of the lesser teams. But against frontline teams at the early stages, he’s a certainty to miss out. And once again, that’s hugely unfortunate. But that’s just how it s going to be.

I am not sure you’re reading the same thing I am reading, but as far as I can tell, nobody here said ‘Yusuf is going to bring us world cup glory. If we drop him, we’re DOOMED!’ or anything along those lines. Whats hyperbolic about saying ‘This is why I think Yusuf will PLAY in the team..’? :giggle: And i’ll happily bump this thread when the line-up for the first match is announced and Kohli is missing from the line-up. :winky:

It depends on how Kohli, Yuvraj, and Yusuf perform over the next 4 ODIs. The hyperbolic bit was his supposed reincarnation as a batsman after one century against a sh!t side and the IPL auction.
