achilles Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Not really. He had a good IPL last year. His domestic/FC Ltd overs record is about on par as the other real contenders- Dhawan, Mukund and Rahane. The other options I guess are open with Kohli, which may not be ideal given he is a long term middle order bat and Uthappa is not exactly in great form right now. MV has (kinda) shown that he cope with international cricket in the longer version so he deserves a chance in ODIs, however I agree he has had it now and can be jettisoned. I think for Rahane. I think Kartik has suffered a bit from being shunted anywhere in the lineup- he too is a middle order bat and should play at 4 or 5, his versatility in this case led to his downfall I think. Though I do agree he should be in the squad at least. What is really beyond a lot of people here is that if MS is possibly grooming players for the opening slots, why is he restricting himself to just Vijay? Why not give proven performers with much more experience a chance? If the experienced campaigners are out of form and youth is the way to go, why is it that only one player makes the cut? The answer to this leads to a territory that is so murky that no one wants to enter it. And as predictable as it may seem, we will see MV as the replacement in ODIs yet again after a decent run on the placid, flat tracks of India during the IPL, with everyone conveniently ignoring his past run. Ditto with Raina's batting credentials in Tests, outside India. If only we were similarly accommodating with Dinesh Karthik or even Robin Uthappa.
Zap_Brannigan Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Makes no sense when he has no chance of making it to the WC squad

Who are these 'proven performers' for the reserve openers slot? Dont you think its fair that the one youngster given a chance be given a fair one before he is discarded? Uthappa did not even get that 'decent run on the placid tracks during the IPL', so he is not really an option. I am not sure how his domestic ltd overs form was but he certainly did not have a great Ranji trophy. I agree that Kartik deserves a longer run in the ODI squad, but Im not sure he is an opening batsman. The only other youngsters are the names I mentioned, and given that Vijay has struggled in ODIs it is about time they get their chance. Having said that, maybe with the WC not far it should be done after the tourno. But those guys- Rahane, Dhawan etc- being behind Vijay in the pecking order until now is not unreasonable Raina has only played in SA outside India right?! He had a fine seires vs SL Im not sure your CSK-clique theory holds much water sorry!
cowboysfan Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Makes no sense when he has no chance of making it to the WC squad the selectors have already made up their mind about the WC squad to be announced in 2 days.
dr_tooley Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Murali Vijay's epitaph will be quite simple. "Couldn't play pace!"
Cricketics Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I will open with Kohli and Tendulkar. Yuvraj first down, Sharma 2nd down.
desi pride 1234 Posted January 15, 2011 Author Posted January 15, 2011 shikar dhawan should be given a run . I don't think Rahane is ready for loi.' he is more like dravid and jaffer.
Sooda Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I will open with Kohli and Tendulkar. Yuvraj first down' date=' Sharma 2nd down.[/quote'] Yeah, Id go with that. Maybe play Sharma at 3 then Yuv, MSD, Raina and bring Yusuf in. desipride Rahane is much more of an aggressive batsman than Jaffer and Dravid. He had a better series in England and the Emerging players tourno than Dhawan (as did Mukund) hence he should be backup for a top order slot I think. His FC strike rate of 60 and List A SR of 85, higher I am sure than Dravid or Jaffer
Cricketics Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Man Sooda, I don't know we have been very defensive in odi's whenever we have played in South AfRICA. Remember the last tour, we opeend with Jaffer in the whole series, and this time we have Vijay. Last time Sehwag was dropped, this time it's his injury. We need to push definately Kohli up. Rahan can't be raced in since he would be somewhere in Mumbai rite nwo, All these can occur once we are done from the world cup after 2 months.
akshaywekhande Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Parthiv patel could have been a much better choice.
Sachin=GOD Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Parthiv patel could have been a much better choice. are you serious????
ViruRulez Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 are you serious???? Jadeja is better than Vijay in ODI .. that says enough of the talunt of Vijay in ODIs .. only a legend like him can have an average of 19 and strike rate of 64 and be selected time and again based on this incredible performance (or maybe on basis of something called CSK MSD Srikanth :--D )

Robin Uthappa (He maybe out of form, but he can do better than MV in form) 3. Shikhar Dhawan 4. Ajinkya Rahane Vijay had no business being in the ODI squad of SA after being miserable even in Zimbabwe. But yet he was picked and no youngster or KKD were given opportunities. Points to something, doesn't it? You may argue Vijay's case, like many CSK supporters, but his poor returns show you don't have a case. Which is why I haven't seen many of the regular CSK fans out in numbers rallying behind their boys. GM completely forgot the posts he made in the thread about Raina being a better batter than Che Pujara and when Raina got dropped, he conspicuously disappeared. Ditto with many people. See, we all know that for years, the South Zone has received the wrong end of the deal. But that doesn't mean they go about picking all and sundry from South based on personal equations. This is the Indian National team, not the Chennai or UP or Punjab XI. The CSK link is kinda obvious.

No I agree with him not necessarily being a good ODI bat and that someone else should have taken his place. He has proved as much over the last few matches...but I am not so sure that the reason he is still there is the whole CSK thing! Man Sooda, I don't know we have been very defensive in odi's whenever we have played in South AfRICA. Remember the last tour, we opeend with Jaffer in the whole series, and this time we have Vijay. Yeah was not suggesting Rahane comes in now, but post WC as I said in my post above. The penny should have dropped a while ago that Vijay is not a ODI player, maybe they think its too late to change with the WC in mind and hope he clicks :dontknow:
saneindian Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Does Ashwin play for CSK? Did Parthiv Patel play for CSK for the last 3 years? Does Balaji play for CSK? If the CSK link was so obvious, why have those three not played more games than they have got in last 2-3 years?
Ranjha Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Does Ashwin play for CSK? Did Parthiv Patel play for CSK for the last 3 years? Does Balaji play for CSK? If the CSK link was so obvious, why have those three not played more games than they have got in last 2-3 years? He cant get everyone in. But slowly, he will. Even MS Goni, Badrinath, Ashwin all got a chance. Raina got A grade contract etc etc
